I was just thinking back to the many things I have seen presented at fanfests over the years....and I seem to recall seeing the idea/concept of ring/comet mining.
However since then ... nothing
Can someone from CCP or CSM say something definitive about this idea? Is it dead? Still being kicked around?
And no this is not a suggestion of mine to go die in the Features and Ideas section - this was actually presented by CCP and shown at a fanfest. Comets I think were something that date back to the days of Exodus. I simply want to know if there is any hope of these ideas seeing fruition in my lifetime in EvE.
Cheers

Ring mining would be, umm, interesting, wrt moon goo. Because most don't produce that much isk per month (most).
However, _something_ will be happening with moon mining in the mid term future.
As for on grid boosting, it's going to be talked about. I have a discussion topic up about it.

Science wise I think it would be utterly impractical. Comets don't really have much that isn't found on planets/moons. Rings even less since they are mostly dust/ice with lower densities that people are lead to believe by movies and TV.
Then again, Movies/TV have propagated the dense asteroid field idea as well. Real asteroid fields that dense would be only shortly after a cosmic event and even then, not for long. That close they'd want to pull together and make a bigger asteroid. Yet, those are the asteroid fields we have in EVE, so... maybe ignore the reality and we might eventually get it.
However, mining seems far from CCP's mind these days.

what was the original idea of ring mining? What would be the exciting difference to normal mining?
how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Something to make mining a little more engaging, and a little less.. Netflix-inducing, would be most welcome.
I would hope any new additions to mining such as these would be made on that premise.

Yeah, that was not promised more like ccp Greyscale dreaming out loud. Had this crazy idea of cities in space too. Structures you could link to each other building your own customized space city that would be able to move too!
Ring mining sounded more feasible and a good option to replace what's mining now.

The new fighter mechanics are really good. If you could make mining fighter drones and make the asteroids active it would be great. Maybe they should be magnetised and attracted to your ship and you have to chew them before they hit you!

You mentioned some tweaks to ship stats and a new structure. Those aren't about changing the fundamentals of how we mine, which is what others in this thread mean.

It was basically that you would mine planetary rings and as way to get moon goo. i think it was building on the old concept from exodus of ;system wide asteroid belts' as for comet mining my idea is below

Thanks Steve !
I hope that the only change is not just the citadel things in the fall/winter....though I am looking forward to that. I had always hoped that the concept of ring/comet mining would remove the passive nature of goo and allow CCP to seed other types of goo throughout null and make it interactive vs passive. With new citadels offering up new taxation options for alliances and corps, I can only hope they move in this direction.
Cheers.

Didn't read entire thread, but there are going to be drilling platforms. So there's that.
Also, is there a meaning to a "ring mining" besides it being a buzzword for "mining that will suck not"? Was there some sort of meaningful prototype at least?

I heard the idea a while ago about comet mining, the idea would be there's a trail of gas behind the comet to be mined, an outer layer of ice, an inner layer of minerals, then moon goo at the core. It travels at 1000 m/s, so it needs to be webbed to slow it down, and damages ships that get too close. Needs to be scanned down to find |

Ring mining was actually proposed as a solution to Moon Goo being a "money printer". I think that with the reduction to the necessity of the goo that has subsequently reduced it's value, ring mining is probably on the back burner since the situation has been mostly resolved.
