How is it possible to know what type of damage the enemies inflict to you? I open up the log but all I get is messages like "a caldary navy raven hit you for x damage" but no info about the type of damage, explosive or thermal or whatever.

Trial and error, use one type of hardener against one type of rat and see how much damage is done, then the next harderner and the same rat. make notes untill you find a harderner or combo of hardeners which reduces the damage the most.
Missiles and rockets is even simpler since the name of the rocket/missile is visible in the log. Just check which damage type it does and tank that.
But mostly it is just a matter of trial and error. luckily those who have gone through all this have compiled lists with what damage types to do to rats and what harderners to use.

To the post two posts above me:
When I check the logs I find info on missiles (e.g. 'a bloodclaw rocket has hit you'), but not for turrets, which seems odd, not to mention unfair on missile users.

You learn over time what damage various weapons do to you. Guns are limited in their damage types by their ammo.
- Lasers (Beams/Pulse) are always EM/Thermal damage. (Generally Amarr ships) - Hybrid (Railguns/Blasters) are always Kinetic/thermal (Generally Caldari/Gallente ships) - Projectile (Artillery/Autocannons) can change damage types to an extent based on the ammo (not locked in like Hybrids/Lasers). (Generally Minmatar ships) - Drones have one drone type for each damage type. If you know the name of the drone that attacked you look it up - Missiles have one missile for each damage type. Look it up.

Yeah that's true. It looks like the only people coming out on top here are Maatri pilots \o/.
Humpalot, I have a quick question: When I readjust my orbit distance, will the ship get into that new orbit asap (it seems not to, but I'm not sure), or should I approach (or double click away) to adjust orbit more quickly?

I see this happen a lot when I am flying my interceptor. I tell it to orbit at a different range and it sorta never gets there. My presonal experience it to manually have the ship fly to roughly the new range you want and then orbit.
