Become the leader of an alliance and get involved in inter-alliance or inner-alliance affairs?
It may involve passage rights, taxes, NAP, mineral contracts, defense, POS, sovereignty, free ships program, mining, etc..

Join a big 0.0 alliance, work up through the ranks, get experience in all kind of things and one day you might become director and then CEO of the corp. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many |

More importantly,.. make yourself known, volunteer to do tasks, eventually running/organizing small time operations and events, and work up from there.

To all the CEOs and alliance heads (or whatever the name is for that) out there, have you found that such a position makes EVE on the whole more enjoyable for you? I know it depends on personality type and will at times be pretty stressful (but perhaps not). Well I assume you wouldn't do it if you didn't enjoy it unless you felt the burden of duty pressing down on your shoulders. Basically what are the pros and cons, the highs and the lows of such lofty positions? And if my CEO sees this, I'm certainly not after your position ;), I'm just interested :).

Once upon a time I was highly placed in (at the time) the largest corp in EVE. When in that position your life in EVE is incredibly busy. My CEO would often have 15 or more private convos going at once. Hundreds of EVE mails. It was quite a task and the burnout factor can be very real. I am actually now in a small corp with my former CEO and her 2nd in command and both find it much more relaxing. Our corp is often a haven for peeps in other alliances to sort of hang low for a bit and recharge (as it were).
In the end it is really a matter of personal preferences. Some people thrive on this sort of thing and love it and the inter/intra alliance politics can get amazingly complex and be a wonder to watch (that a game can produce such a thing is truly one of EVE's most astonishing accomplishments). But it is not for everybody.
So, if this sort of thing is what floats your boat go for it. You will find astonshing depth to the game there but it is not for the faint of heart or casual player.
