So I started a couple days, Mining and Missions didnt attract me then I noticed people left all kinds of valuable items laying around in cans...
I am now 3-4 mil richer and am pondering my options. I keep getting attacked by Battlecruisers who claim this space trash, and the occasinal destroyer.
I am planning on fighting back of course, but my Slasher doesnt seem to cut it. I can almost drop a Rifters shields but the BC and Trasher just.. well thrash me!
Should I move up to the Thrasher myself, or is the Rifter a solid combat unit? I want to be able to stay with close range fighting so I can scamble. But the Web/Nos combo on the BC and some Thrashers just bring the hurt on!

I have never really flown Min ships myself but I hear enough to say that the Rifter is considered one of the finest T1 Frigs in all of EVE. I know many senior players who still like jumping back in their on occasion.
That said I guess wait till you hear from someone more knowledgeable but I think the Rifter can never really be a "bad" choice.
Even so not sure you will ever have much luck in a Rifter versus a Battlecruiser (assuming the BC pilot is competent with a solid setup). Best a Rifter (alone) might hope for here is a draw where neither of you can kill the other (BC can't hit you and you can't cause enough damage to break their tank).

Edited by: Kua Immortal on 03/03/2007 22:16:10 I'm fairly new so not terribly well qualified to answer your questions but I'll have a bash.
Battle cruisers are a much larger ship than frigates, they have roughly 20 times the tank and as I haven't piloted or even looked into them probably 20 times the gank (but that is of lesss significance because his medium sized guns will have some trouble hitting you). If one turns up, RUN AWAY!
A destroyer on the other hand is a much more even match for your rifter. He has similar tank, but more gank (2/3 more weapons), but you are more nimble and faster.
If it's close range fighting ur after PvPing in a rifter is perfect. I've been 'learning' to PvP in a rifter the past couple weeks and its been a blast. Although I'm glad I didn't hold off the step up to cruisers any longer, because I'm now in a rupture and have minced up two thoraxes (gallente cruiser) in just a few hours.
As for piloting a thrasher, PvP wise I can't really comment. Destroyers get a lot of bad press, but I remember one guy who took my rifter in seconds, but his destroyer was fitted specifically for frigate sized ships and had very expensive mods so meh.
Cool to see your into the PvP and the ing already. PvE blows, it's only good for making money and it's pretty bad at that. that's my opinion anyway.

Destroyers do need some loving from CCP but in general they are meant to be an anti-interceptor/anti-frig platform. A T1 frig will likely have real trouble versus a destroyer. Of course a lot depends on the relative fittings and pilot tactics.

Yea, destroyers are pretty much solid anti-frigate platforms. If you want to take on things bigger than those, you should probably get a cruiser. ----------------------- Yea, Tho I Walk Through The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death, I Shall Fear No Evil

Newer players flying Destroyers generally see the range bonus and big powergrid and then immediately fit long range weapons. Most new players also don't usually skill for a web. If you want to engage one, look at him and see if he has short on long range weapons, and if he's fit for range then go ahead and orbit as close as you can. Destroyers go down pretty fast when they cant hit you (just don't try and approach a range one from 20km or something).

I had my first kill today!
I was lucky enough to have someone help me last night explaining me a lot about the possible traps, problems and opportunities. He also gave me 2 million and the order to get myself a Coercer. I managed to get 8 guns on that thing with an armor booster and some extra HP (ok, he told me exactly what to put on it hehe, not going take the glory for that :P ).
I was in Amarr where some Gallente scum tried to trick me in stealing something from his container. The guy was a month old but he was in a frigate so I figured I'd have the better odds and with adrenaline coming out of my ears I went and sprung the trap, nicking some ore after which he targeted me and started shooting. That's where my 8 bringers of salvation (ok, lasers) ripped him apart!!!
After that we had a nice RP(ish) conversation in local chat while I tried to calm down from the experience.... GREAT STUFF !
