Why do the Thrasher and the Cormorant (T1 destroyers) have only 7 turret hardpoints while the Coercer and Catalyst both have eight? Instead of an eighth turret hardpoint they get a launcher hardpoint which is practically useless.
Everything else is equal about these ships. Is the fact that their slot configuration is 3-mids-2-lows instead of 2-mids-3-lows like the Coercer and Catalyst? That is the only reason I can't think of, but it still doesn't seem like a good one. When I fit out a Cormorant, whether it is with a rail fit or a blaster fit, I can't help but wonder why anyone would ever bother when they could fly the Cat instead, and the same goes for Coercer / Thrasher.
Those eight turret hardpoints are powerful. I'll take a Coercer or a Cat over a Corm or a Thrasher any day. Thoughts?

Simply put; the weapon systems, bonuses, and ship stats are not equal.
A Thrasher with 7 Artillery guns can practically alpha most Tech 1 Frigates off the field. And fitted with Autocannons, it has enough gank, trank, range, and flexibility to make a Catalyst blush (have you ever seen what a "Buzzsaw Thrasher" can do?).
The Cormorant... yeah... it is a little underpowered. Except at range. And in groups. It is one of the few Destroyers that excels at long range sniping. It is VERY deadly when performing this tactic (I once lost a triple-rep Hyperion to about 15 of them at more than 70km off in less than 30 seconds).
The Catalyst suffers from very short range when fitted with blasters and a very tight fitting grid with any array of weapons.
The Coercer... euhhhhhhhh... it is less flexible than the Catalyst and slower. MUCH slower. So it doesn't see much use on the field outside of sneaky "MAX GANKAGE" fits.

coercer is a lot scarier than you're giving it credit for.
With pulse lasers it can reach out to 20km with scorch and has perfect tracking when at short range making it one of the most versatile destroyers out there. |

Thanks for the replied. I guess the Corm and Thrasher have that bit of extra utility that makes them excel more in fleets - more mid slots means more ewar or sensor booster.
Cormorant gets that insane optimal range that can't really be matched by Catalyst falloff (can it?)
Thrasher gets that crazy alpha damage bonus. One shot frigates, and in groups you can one shot even bigger ships like cruisers.
Plus they also have a missile hardpoint so I guess it's almost fair
Just from my experience I fly solo and I would almost always prefer the straight up gank of the Cat or Coercer, in pulse/blaster or beam/rail versions, either way they are ******* beast.

You can get it to hit out to 50km or so... but more than that and you will be making it into a paper airplane.
The Cormorant can go out to 70+ km before it has to make those kinds of sacrifices. Hell... I have been in Corm gangs where we were picking off frigates at ranges of 100km. It was pretty funny.

Here are two fits I used to adore:
[Thrasher, Shield Buzzsaw] Damage Control II Gyrostabilizer II
Medium Shield Extender II 5MN Y-T8 Compact Microwarpdrive Warp Scrambler II
200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 'Arbalest' Rocket Launcher I, Caldari Navy Inferno Rocket
Small Projectile Burst Aerator I Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
- If you overload the weapons, you will be pumping out close to 400 dps. Moreover, you have a little over 8000 ehp to soak up the damage and can burn at 1800 m/sec.
[Thrasher, Armor Buzzsaw] Damage Control I 400mm Rolled Tungsten Compact Plates
Induced Compact Multispectral ECM 5MN Y-T8 Compact Microwarpdrive Warp Scrambler II
200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S Small Energy Neutralizer II
Small Projectile Burst Aerator I Small Anti-Explosive Pump I Small Trimark Armor Pump I
- This was one of my more favorite fits. It deals a lot less damage than the shield fit (about 250 dps), but it has the ability to shut down active tanks if given enough time. Moreover, the ECM can give you a clear advantage against more dps heavy ships... provided it lands (yes, it is a "dice roll," but we are talking about Tech 1 Destroyers here... they are cheap).

The longbow cormorant does 154 dps out to 103 km optimal, and it tracks even ab frigates and drones flawlessly.
It is a monster sniper, in groups it obliterates almost anything within that radius without even needing tackle. |
