Ship guarding
I just thought of a idea going with boasters being pushed on grid is that fleets could simply alpha them. But what if adding some more realism and meta tactics to game ships could block for one another? Say five battleships could be close to a command ship or another important ship and deliberately use their strong hulls and shields to block shots for the more important command ship.
Eve doesnGÇÖt have first person physics of shoots traveling though space and might not work in any foreseeable future with a unrestricted universe with so many ships, so a work around to depict this with gun mechanics is either a module is equipped that targeted a friendly ship tethers and or links with it to block shots or just a option period without a mod to block or guard a ship. To keep it so some actual positioning takes place have it be a close range of a few thousand meters needed for it, like a web.
As for the effect could be anything reasonable like say the ship doing the tanking takes half of the damage from any attack or intercepts half of the attacks of the ship being guarded, and the more guarding the more the damage gets split, ten ships, only one in ten shots gets in.
A advantage of having it be a module with visual effect is would still allow people with alpha tactics to identify by positon and effect which ship is being blocked by which, and then proceed to alpha each of the GÇÿprotectorsGÇÖ before the main target and or just look for isolated ships and alpha them. And that with the thing it requires positioning.
We already do have space healers but why not dedicated space tanks? I could see interesting things coming from this because it allow command ships to have to be on grid and have reasonable ways to protect them or any other important friendlyGÇÖs and further encorage ship formations. Could have all sorts of applications both PVP and PVE. Think about some important person in space having a guarding retinue that would lay down space lives taking shots for the vip that would be super cool.
Here is a cool example from enders game, of course choosing kids is a horrible idea for how annoying and stupid they are but still a dramatic and cool scene with all the swarms of small ships blocking the giant one before it makes it final push

One episode of this show at least has the blond general turned galactic Kaiser flying around his fancy white flag ship, the enemy makes a push to trying to take out his ship which then results in his generals moving their own ships in the way to protect him.

Honestly your idea sounds interesting but it is unnecessary. You can achive something similar to this with a logi ship that only reps the boosting ship and is willing to die for it. |

Let me correct that for you, it sounds interesting, but you will have to totally rewrite the collision detection system in Eve online to take account of other ships and objects that are in the way, ontop of the fact of taking into account what happens if a frigate passes infront of a battleship shot by mistake? What happens if you get that fancy little text of "X misses Y by a large margin." Does it go all mass effect style and hit stuff behind them?

A logi reping ship is simmilar, but this would just be a ship taking shots that the other ship is taking. So it would be idealy a ship fit with the biggest buffer and resistances, and be nothing based on remote reping, but a added tatic could be the ship doing the blocking is getting reps itself.
And to the other point being that eve does not have projectile colision mechanics, thats why was leaning it to be some thing you activate when near a ship (like 4000m or closer) and then your ship is in the blocking mode to take shots for the other ship, mabey even have the ship locked in formation with the other one though that might be abused with people multi boxing.
The best equivelent would be one of those fantasy character MMO's they dont have colision mechanics or anything, so say if a paladin or some sheild class wants to block a character they just activate a ability and then the ability mechanics start working.
In a very ideal universe to simulate this effect it would all be based off projectiles actualy traveling though space and along the way coliding into just about anything. And even having a effect where in a large fleet battle it might be imposiable to single out targets being eveyrthing is clustered so thick any shots you throw at the other fleet would hit something. But again would not work with eve, so something instead of a activated ability or module to simulate the effect if you are so close to whatever ship you want to protect. |

Cool idea. Although I don't know if people will be too happy about having to fit another module to each of their ships. You could probably also abuse this with the logis themselves. If you had ten BS linked to a logi the logi would have an easier time repping the BS unless someone focused on those which is what you would have to do.
If you want to make it a module maybe something that the VIP ship fits and then links to the defenders. You could also make it an AOE with the ability to affect ANYTHING in range. I could see some interesting mechanics here with sacrifice ships that you could link to enemy ships to do a lot of damage to many ships without having to lock them. I would make it that if you are splitting the dmg then no more than the targeted ship can take can go to the "defending" ships. i.e. Defended ships has EHP of 50k, 9 ships are linked so ten in total. You would have to fire 500k dmg at the Defended ship to destroy it and each of the other ships would have received equal amounts of dmg (well maybe not depending on resistances). Which resistance mechanics could be very important here. So if you know a fleet has a weakness against one buff your sacrifice ship on that resistance.
For AOE dmg you would most likely have to exclude this from dmg that can be redirected to defending ships. You could abuse the hell out of this with smart bombs or bombs.
Example of using this would be something like: Fleet has a composition of high alpha ships, a dmg specific buffer tank to the alpha, and a command dessie with a MJDG. Attacking fleet comes in, MJDG the tank (and dessie of course) into the middle of the fleet (which would take some skill and time maybe). During spin up the Alphas lock the tank and fire once he lands. You could also have two MJDGs with close range alpha for this as well. The smaller ships in the defending fleet go pop, the larger ones are damaged and now you have to mop up.
It would create some major chaos in the defending fleet. Not sure how feasible that scenario is but sounds plausible and cool to me at least *shrugs*
Then again that could also be exploited in HS extensively so a Sec limit would probably need to be placed on it.
Don't shoot me, just throwing ideas out there for good or bad. Just iterating and seeing what comes next.
Again not sure how much work this would create for CCP and server load (which they are always trying to reduce) but interesting idea. |
