Hi folks, although I still primarily play eve on Windows, I occasionally use Mint and am planning to scrap my Windows installation altogether in the next couple of weeks.
I was just interested in hearing people's experiences of playing eve (and related software/apps) on different distros, the stability, ease of use/setup etc. I know a lot of you use Ubuntu which I'm also a big fan of so may try that as well.

Kubuntu 14.04.03 LTS here. Smooth sailing both with system WINE and the new Snorlax Launcher. I use linux to play EVE since Trinity (2007). Actually I play on a 4K.
Plan to update to 16.04 soonish.

I use Ubuntu 14.04 (just because I have an old AMD graphic card) and drivers for it are a pain on 16.04
Mint should be ok for eve.
As for the rest of the apps, evemon works with wine, pyfa runs native on linux. |

Cheers for the replies guys, I actually just grabbed a copy of Manjaro distro and am loving it, only done limited testing so far but it seems solid and eve runs like a dream using the dedicated launcher.

I generally tend to stay away from the fancy small distros. Better to stick with the big ones that are known to be maintained properly, have a large community behind them and are known to "just work" |

Using Ubuntu Mate 16.04, works just fine. Honestly, eve shouldn't be a problem on most distros, as long as your drivers work on linux. Just need WINE and enough power to run it. |

Actually you don't need wine since the native launcher will download it's own version of wine to run EVE, so you don't have to worry about configuring wine, and versions and whatnot |

Im on 15.04 and working great so far (minus the bugs, but those are also experienced in windows hehe). I been thinking to upgrade eventually to 16.04 LTS just because of the extended support on the LTS, but I dont know if its possible, and now that the other guy mentions problems with some older Amd/Ati I wonder if I should do so.
Ubuntu Mate 15.04 64bit // Amd A8-5600K with IGP Trinity 7650D // 6GB DDR3 // Sandisk 120GB SSD Plus //
Wine 1.7.50 // Beta Launcher and Native Linux Launcher (Separate Installs) // TS3 working // Happy to be back in Ubuntu :)

From my personal experience I wouldn't recommend Manjaro. It's not bad if you just want to try how Arch "feels like", but because it has some pre-installed stuff and configurations it's inferior to clean Arch. Used it, had some config problems that required intensive solution searching all over related forums ("we don't support Manjaro here, move along heretic" etc) and in the end just installed clean Arch. Installation is a no-brainer (in a nutshell: "simply input commands from guide") |

Gentoo, of course.
As of using big know distribution instead of small one, that mean nothing really.
For exemple, Ubuntu leave know CVE (that are fixed since years) in there 12.04 and 14.04 server version (exemple, proftpd) while smaller distrib like Void Linux, don't have that kind of problem. |

I use Gentoo as well, not just to play but also for work and everything else.
I just really like how it allows me to select what packages I want in the latest or a specific version while all the other packages I don't care about are in a stable version and need no attention from me. It's certainly not the right distro for everyone, but if you need a flexible Linux where you are at the helm then Gentoo is for you.
There is a reason why there are so many distributions and they all have their strengths in different places. There is no best distro for EVE, since software usually does not care where it is running (if it does, it's some serious piece of **** and you should probably not use it), but there is a best distro for you and only you alone can answer this question. It will be the distro where you feel yourself really comfortable and empowered.

I currently use Fedora release 24 (just upgraded in the last week) on my primary PC and laptop Fedora is basically Centos/Red Hat but more bleeding edge package wise.
The bleeding edge bit doesn't bother me as I used to run Gentoo with ~AMD64 (think that was the flag) which was effectively the same thing. (don't try that at home unless you understand it can be a 1 way upgrade)
I've also used Ubuntu and Mint but I got annoyed with those distributions for one reason or another and moved on.
I'm running the NVIDIA binary blob driver and it works very well other than needing re-install from run level 3 every time there is an Xorg, kernel or some other graphics related package update.
Fedora has reasonable package support and there are 3rd party repositories and tools that can make things easier for when you need some particular capability.
As of today (about 50 minutes ago) I'm using CCP_Snorlax's new launcher (once I got my thick head around exactly which gui settings files to migrate) and so far it's great :)
I've been using Linux exclusively since some time in 2005 |

I returned to this game about a week ago (after a shy 7 years ) and one of the main reason was the ability to run on Linux. Running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 here, with Intel/Nvidia hardware from around 2011. Nvidia proprietary drivers works fine for me, probably thanks to the old hardware I have. I'd suggest to pick the Linux distro based on the package system and shell you liked. Kinda fell in love with the Gnome shell after using Kali Linux for some penetration testing (white hat stuff ). APT commands are familiar to me since I used Debian based distros in the past. Ubuntu has huge community, which makes Googling for typical Linux issues quite easy (or a bit faster). Probably the next format time I'd consider about installing Arch Linux or other distro based on it.
To me Linux is also a learning experience and I'm somewhat privacy concerned. I rather have my tin foil hat on, know what my OS is doing, and take the risk of spending time on troubleshooting applications than use Windows.

Personally I'm a debian purist, although I am considering switching devuan.org (systemd bloat) I've used Debian for 8 years and used to run EVE in either VMs or through wine, the manual way.
CCP should consider switching to Vulkan, assuming they're not already; so that Mac + Linux users get GPU acceleration on all platforms. |

Looks like I'm Gentoo number 3 or 4 depending on whether or not we want to ostracize Tan'Natok .
I use Gentoo for reasons entirely unrelated to EVE, but my being able to play EVE on Linux is what allowed me to drop Windows entirely...as long as DX11 support doesn't become the minimum too soon. |

Get support a very few AMD card (just the GCN 1.2) Good Nvidia support Do mac actually have Vulkan support? (They got OpenGL 4 really late... like, so late that open source drivers on Linux got it before, like four years late). |

I can't answer the OP's question directly. It's a personal thing.
Mine is PCLinuxOS. Several reasons: No systemd, and never will be. No sudo, you should read the critique of the use sudo in Ubuntu on the PCLOS website. Talk about giving it to you straight. Lastly it's a rolling release distro based on the late lamented Mandrake.
That's good enough for me, but of course not for everyone. |

I personally use Gentoo, but I don't think it's the best for Just Eve.
Gentoo shines when you have many worflow or personal preference requirements for features / application versions that are not satisfied all together by a binary distribution. It enables you to mix and match applications and dependencies with much more flexibility than any binary distribution.
If I was installing a system just to run Eve on with a basic productivity suite and a web browser I'd probably go with Debian. Ubuntu seems pretty popular, but it's been my experience they break a lot of stuff that works upstream in Debian, and I've not really found what Ubuntu offers in compensation for all that breakage |

I always wanted to try Gentoo, but my hardware was incompatible at the time so I learned Slackware. I had it running great on slackware 12 13 1nd 14 and mint 17. Hopefully going to get it running in 18 tonite, I'll have to check out the current launcher situation.

Just switched my Laptop to Linux and used Linux Mint Mate 18 Works now. ( just had to update the Kernel since AMD graphics support is in such a wonderful state... )
Simply load launcher - install wine to resolve dependency issues Enjoy
I think since Debian, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mint use the same core its safe to say it will work. :D |

Holy smokes, I would never have expected there to be so many Gentoo users here. Outside of eve, I'm the only one I know who uses Gentoo for anything. Quite interesting. |
