Hi Everyone,
I just want to share about how I managed to solve issues I had with random BSODs while playing EVE. Typically, a lot of the forum posters seem to point to graphics card or sound card related issues.
What I found out is that if you are using a Marvell Yukon 88E8053 Gigabit Ethernet card/chipset, some of the older network drivers have an issue in which they cause a BSOD. This happens often, especially if you leave the computer turned on 24 /7. Typically, after a reboot, you will see some TCP/IP related errors in your System Event Log.
I upgraded to the latest drivers and the problem totally vanished.
Hope this helps some of you guys too. Stay Safe!

Edited by: Lebowske on 06/03/2007 16:32:07 Can you be a bit more specific?
Which driver version were you using? Whcih driver version have you upgraded to? What mainboard do you have?
What "random nature" caused the BSODS? Totally random? - or random as in "sometimes when I entered a system" or "sometimes when I fired my guns / repaired my ship".
Reason for my question - is that Im seeing BSOD too - but these are related to the Realtek HD audio device. However, I do have the same network adapter as you - so I'd like some more information.
Please :)

Totally random. Sometimes in space, sometimes in station, sometimes with market window open, etc

Yeah. My board has the a Realtek HD chip too and I initally thought the problem was there. After upgrading the network chip driver, no BSOD for a long time too

The Marvell Yukon 88E8053 Gigabit Ethernet driver bug was a problem for a number of games a while back. What happened is a version of the driver was released with the rare weird bug, and set out via Windows Update. Then once people sorted out what was wrong, and knew what to update to fix the crashing, and found there was a newer driver available, problem solved... except that even a year or two after the fact, the Windows Update driver still was the older deadly one, not the fixed one.
And thus, the problem lingers on to this day. :/

That's very interesting. I have a different Marvell chipset (still GigE) on my m/board, and occasional black-screen lockups. I've also occasionally had complete network shutdowns on this machine, solved either by a reboot or by manually disabling/enabling the interface. I'll try looking for newer drivers and see if that fixes both problems. I haven't looked at the System Event log. --- The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach it to you. |
