Xirces wrote:Legit question, why do you need a safe space in a game where no one is going after you? I agree with most people in this thread. No one cares one way or another what your orientation is. Because of that, why exactly does anyone need a safe space? I'm left handed in real life, do I need a safe space because people IRL years ago make fun of people who were left handed (even though noone in EVE does?) Same thing, isn't it? Sexual orientation doesn't matter to EVE, what matters is how you can play the game. Your poor analogy indicates you don't get it and probably never will.
No one has a problem with women in EVE seeking out and creating their own communities. And most players are quite supportive of them, whereas some of the things I've heard said about LGBT are downright hostile (and incessant from certain individuals).
Does anyone "care" if you're a woman playing EVE? No, we just want to blow up space ships with you! Does that mean you'll enjoy hanging out with a bunch of immature men constantly talking about topics that make you uncomfortable or hold no interest for you? Depends on your tolerance for such behavior. A lot of people would rather find a group with like-minded people to enjoy their time with.

You mean like Sandwich Kitchen Citadel? j/k, j/k <-see?
You make good points, Forelli. Although EvE mostly doesn't much care who you are IRL, like-minded people have been gathering at least in social groups in EvE since it's beginning.

Does it matter if the community specifically identifies as LGBT?

I believe that no one has been disrespectful in this thread so far. Although, as i already have pointed out, the OP has never answered nor posted anything on the forums since, so we can assume he either doesn't want to discuss the topic anymore, or he has moved away from EVE.

I understand completely. Your poor analogy means you really don't though. You don't care if you're in a group with women, but in a group that's mature and respectful. Male or female has nothing to do with that. Are you OK playing with immature women but not OK with immature men?
That's my point. We shouldn't care about race/religion/sexual orientation/etc. We should care about maturity. Period. You backhandedly claiming that men are less mature in game than women shows we have a ways to go with tolerance. |

Not that there's anything wrong with being immature...It's a game, it doesn't need to be the pinnacle of modern class. Men enjoy acting a certain way around each other and that's fine. But it doesn't necessarily mean a woman will step into that environment and enjoy it. It's not about what you feel is "mature enough", it's about what makes that individual comfortable. You don't get to decide that for them.
I've been in a large corp/alliance where "jewing" was the most common term used for money making. Was anybody trying to be offensive? No...it was so commonly used they didn't even think of it that way. Is it immature? Yes, arguably. If a Jewish person found it offensive and decided to find another group would you be right to say "suck it up, no one cares if you're Jewish"? No! It's their right to find a group of people to play with that doesn't make them uncomfortable.
You don't have to go out of your way to accommodate people that find every old thing offensive, but you also shouldn't deride them for choosing to play with someone else.

...yes...yes you did say that. re-read what you wrote. Someone using the term 'jewing' is an issue of immature people talking. It has nothing to do with race/gender/sexual orientation.
Again, and I can talk slower, it's an issue of immature people. Not anything that has anything to do with sexual orientation, as is the topic of this thread. Are you saying a jewish person should try and join a corp of only jewish people, instead of just trying to find one that doesn't have 14 year old immature people who use terms like 'jewing'?

EVE (like real life and every other online game) is rife with immature (to put it kindly) and malicious (to put it less kindly) people. Just because you are mature doesn't mean everyone is. EVE is not immune to these problems, and if you think it is then your experience must be very narrow. It's quite rampant, with some groups being much worse than others.
Really we agree on the root of the issue. I'm sure the OP would be happy to find a mature group of players who won't put them down. Realistically though, that can be difficult to find. Joining a group of like-minded players is just a shortcut to achieve that goal, because they're coming from a common background. Who are we to tell him OP he/she doesn't need that? It's not for us to decide.

I had not idea that there were such small and close-minded people playing EvE.
Joining channels and groups purely because you want to spend time with like-minded people who never present a contradictory or differing point-of-view is a very sad way to live.
But, as has already been mentioned, it appears that the close-minded OP has moved on.

So if I punched you in the face repeatedly, you'd just be cool with that and we could still be friends?
Honestly...calling OP close-minded and in the same breath trying to control how they live their life...

You're totally misreading the convo. Looking for like minded, or at least generally polite people who don't make you uncomfortable---IN A GAME-- which is supposed to be FUN. Is not "a sad way to live." Because playing a game is not life, it's a hobby. And people should be able to enjoy their hobbies exactly the way they want so long as it hurts no one else.
