You should try updating your ship to a Merlin has much more firepower + survivability.
You could try this setup newbie friendly setup:
High: 2x Standard Missle Launcher I 2x 125mm Railgun I
Mid: 1x 1MN Afterburner I 1x Small Shield Booster I 2x Cap Rechargers
Low: 2x Power Diagnostic System I

There's your problem right there. Do some mining or take on single rats in high-sec asteroid belts for a few days to build up your isk, while also training up a few of your basic combat skills. By this weekend, you should have an actual frigate to fight with and better skills, and then start missioning?

Rat refers to NPC pirats. You can make some easy money going flying to asteriod belts in systems with a security rating of 0.8 or less and killing the rats that are found there. The higher the security of the system the easier the rats are to kill. So even in your rookie ship, you should be able to handle the rats in the belts of a 0.8 system. Once you get the money and skills for a better ship, you can go back to running missions or you can keep ratting.

Yeah, the newbie frigate is really really limited; it's been designed to just take you through the tutorial and that's about it.
Look through the market for Frigate-class ships for your race (Caldari?). The top ones (like the Merlin or Kestrel) they run about 300k, plus 150k more for the guns, ammo, shields, etc., they can handle most missions. If you don't have enough money, you can opt for the entry-level combat frigate (for Caldari that would be the Condor), which only costs about 30k. Even this entry-level ship is much much better than the newbie ship.
Alternately, you could get a cheap mining ship (Bantam, for Caldari) for about 25k, strap 2 mining lasers to it, and use it to mine scordite in some 0.9 system nearby, and you'll typically make the 300k or so you need for the combat frigate mentioned above within a couple hours.

An easy way till you get sorted is to get the ship that is fast (and cheap)for your race.
Minmatar - any frigates are fast for this race, slasher is cheap though Caldari - condor Gallente - Atron Amarr - Executioner
Train to use afterburners, and fit the longest range guns, and use ammo that will hit up to about 20km
Minmatar - 280mm artillery cannons Caldari - 150mm rails Gallente - 150mm rails (both use hybrids) Amarr - Medium beam laser
If you look through the ammo types they offer different ranges, you need the small size relative to the gun you are using,
You can easily do level 1 missions just by keeping at range and picking them off 1 by one, as you get more iskies you can upgrade your ship and tanking stuff so you can use shorter range stuff to kill them faster.
Not sure what level 1 missions are like for missile spam, only gurista NPC really spam missiles, with angels firing a few.
See how you go anyway
Ship - 50k (i think, how much are they these days??) Equip - 15k (ish)

Edited by: Letouk Mernel on 06/03/2007 18:59:32 As for completing the mission, you can either ask for help in the local channel, then gang up with whoever offers and warp with them to the mission area, or you can just ignore the mission for a while and go gather your cash for the new ship. Any loss of standing from abandoning the mission will be recuperating by just doing 2 more missions for that agent, so it's not a big deal.
You can also abandon one mission every few hours (4?) with no repercussions.

You can probably get into a condor your first day by mining and doing courier missions even. Start working on your gunnery and small turret skills. Aim for a kestrel or merlin fast because the condor is a weak ship for missions.

mush - I got a Condor my 2nd day (Friday). Fit it with a missile launcher and an afterburner, and you can easily outrun the pirates while pasting them with missiles from a safe orbiting distance.

Orbiting and pasting from long range that's what caldari are pretty good at. Take the time with tech 1 frigates to learn what each race's ship is good at. Work to be good with them and the bigger ships will be more fun to fly.

It's quite easy to get into a Condor after running the tutorial (which gives you a reasonable amount of ISK) and an easy mission or two. It's even possible to run Worlds Collide in a Condor, as long as you're careful. Fortunately I had enough ISK on hand for a replacement, which I was slightly more cautious with.
Don't worry about jumping straight into a Merlin, as they are quite pricey. Just get a Condor, and pretty much *any* guns that you can afford (other than the Civilian modules) will be fine for starters. My progression was: Rookie ship on day 1, Condor on days 2 and 3, bought a Merlin and it was smooth sailing from there.

There are a couple of L1 missions that are significantly harder than the rest, btw. _______

Have you done the tutorials???
I had enough money at the end of the tutorials for a ship upgrade and some better weapons.
Then it was off to 0.8 space to do some mining and rat killing until I could upgrade again.
