After leaving the planetary interaction for some time, I recently thought I could take another run at it.
It has been a while and I did setup planets before but I was so used to drag an drop everything to chat channels or contract windows or cargo holds that most of the UI didn't make sense at all.
So here is what I propose,
1. Drag and drop
When you open the planetary view on a planet and you have placed your command center, the next thing that would make sense is that you select, drag and drop your extractor thingy close to the point of the resources.
Once placed the next thing that would make sense is that you select that extractor thing and have the option you "connect" it to the command center or a space port or another extractor thingy.
Now that you have the connections to each others buildings, you want to place extractor heads on the resource you want to "harvest".
2. Accept and place when you are pleased, not before
Once you have setup the "buildings" and connection, you may see that you made a mistake and have to move the extractor thingy to another place on the planet.
What would make sense now would be to select said "building" and hold and place it with your already set up connections to the new place and drop it.
Then and only then you would "accept and place" the buildings and setup your extractor timers and let the processors to their work until there is no more and you start extracting again.
3. Spaceport drag and drop (import and export via drag and drop)
It would make sense that when you open the spaceports storage, you can drag and drop the materials into the customs office and collect it with a hauler and the spaceport would know that you want to "export" your materials or resources.
Unfortunately, you have to yell at the UI and click on places, nobody would even look to click in the first place and have to "accept changes" immediately and spend more isk on removing your buildings and placing them again that you lose interest entirely.

Or..... We simply 'Fit' a district on the planet, much like ships or Citadels. We can then fight over Districts from space, bombarding the facility, reinforcing it, then bombarding it again to force it's surrender. Uses orbital ammo of course to keep that stuff used now dust is gone, since orbital ammo is small guns, it's easily accessible for everyone, and it puts some risk onto PI.
Then you can have it auto tick, just like Moons do, since there is no need to create click spam required since inactive players get kicked from corp and loose PI (Since it would be player corp only), their fittings going into the asset recovery system, or get war decced and their PI districts taken.
And we all win from vastly reduced click spam. |

Yeah but that would increase the price of citadels and citadel modules by a gazillion.
If you life in w-space, there is more than enough risk involved if you want to sell your PI products and in low and null you can get ganked on the way to a station.
I don't know, let's keep brainstorming.

I don't know, let's keep brainstorming. Why? That depends how much a district produces. As for 'risk' ok, WH's have a tiny amout, but blockade runners really remove pretty much all the risk from low, Null only risk is if you hit one of those 'Drop 1000000 cans' bubble camps with active pilots on grid at the same time.
But if the idea is to remove clickfest mechanics and micromanagement from it while keeping it as a producer, lets do the fitting districts. It would mean PI could produce more individually since there would be more competition and fewer afk PI alt farms. All of which are good things. |

Has anyone heard if the new structures will change pi? I know it's affecting regular mining come next December. |

Not yet but I keep my eyes and ears peeled. The only thing I know is coming soon-ish is that drilling platform.

You should be able to save a PI fitting and drag and drop it on to the planet. That would be such a quality of life improvement.
CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

That too. You won't get any objections from me on that one.
