Is it viable? Is it worth the trouble? I was thinking of having one alt scanning down the exits while the others doing PI just sit there cloaked in their epithals, or offline, until it's time to haul the goods.
I ask this because I want to do WH PI but I can't imagine myself being able to fund and defend a POS/citadel anytime soon and don't want to depend on a WH corp to do it either. I have experience with WH relic exploration and have been trying PI on lowsec for almost a month or so. However, as I plan to use more alts for that in the future, I'm starting to wonder, maybe I should try setting them up for higher yields already.
I do understand this idea comes from a newbie's standpoint, though. As such, would that be too crazy? Probably naive?
Thanks in advance. |

I think I'd recommend joining Signal Cartel. They are based in Thera, but are mostly solo explorers, so they can give you lost of advice, plus intel on wormhole chains and such.
Unless you are in a C1 or C2, you will find probing for hisec a pain. C1 are also really small, so that C2 is more practical ... but all C2 are usually occupied. |

It would be doable by having two alts. One in a scanning ship and the other in an epithal. They could trade ships in space so they are both doing PI and then log off in space. But I don't think it would be worth it. The biggest hassle in PI is setting up the colonies. With no real presence in the WH you would have no control over the POCO's and they could be shut off to you at any time.
If you do a bit of searching you can find WH corps that will rent you access to their PI on a monthly basis at a lower cost than a POS. You'll have some camaraderie and backup to boot. Make sure it's a corp that has some longevity. A system with a LS exit is a lot quieter and easier to find, but having a HS exit makes logistics more convenient.
If you really want to go Solo Gevlin (GreedyGoblin) has some blog posts on how to do it in a C1 using a POS.

I have been doing exactly as you ask for a year now.
You will want to find a low class wormhole with your mix of planets. Lower class holes will have better market access, especially if they have a hi-sec static.
You will want to establish some type of arrangement with both the poco owners and the current residents. If you are lucky then they are the same.
I run slightly scaled up version using two accounts. I enjoy exploration so I keep a dedicated scan and exploration alt in the hole.

sure, it's possible.
is it advisable? possibly not, but hell, whatever floats your boat. if you have this itch, go scratch it! this is EVE dear Sir!
i'd suggest fitting your epithal with an MWD, cloak and probe launcher (possibly a probe strength rig or midslot array, or two. Don't use a Sister's launcher on a T1 Hauler, but the sisters probes are a wise investment). you won't be probing down ghost sites, but you will nail down wormhole sigs.
i'd also want to get in there with a fast Frigate at some point and burn tactical bookmarks around all the POCOs. you are interloping in what may well be someone else' honeyhole. choose your hole with care, ideally one with no active POS shields or citadels. check tax rates carefully.
evac your product regularly. i do WH PI and while my P1-P2 factory setups can be left alone for two days, I try to empty them out every day if possible. Simply so it will hurt less when I get my Epithal asploded out from under me (protip: if you're taking fire and in range of the POCO, dump your product back in it ;) )
Finally: Mash your d-scan. Regularly.

There's a group trying to set up a freeport Wormhole, and one of their goals is to control the POCO's in the system. You might want to give them a look: https://www.reddit.com/r/OasisCitadel/comments/4rnlq6/capsuleers_i_am_pleased_to_announce_oasis_has/

I there any incentive to go wormhole over nullsec? Just find yourself a quiet NPC nullsec area with acceptable fees and good planets ...

You can always live out of the new Oasis WH. It has a open fortizar. It remains to be seen though whether they get camped a lot.
They have very good PI.

Thanks for all your input. I'm still undecided but will probably wait a little more before leaving lowsec PI. |

A lot of Low class WHs have direct access to HS and in a large number of cases the exit will be fairly close to a trade hub. in Null the NS > HS/LS system are often camped / very busy which means to find a quiet system you have to be a fair distance from a trade hub.
As for the OP, I would not use a dedicated scanner. Even with Lvl3 scanning skills you can easily scan down most WHs.
As mentioned above the hardest part is finding a WH with open Pocos and not full of murdery people. Once you have that the logistics of it is not super hard.
Setup safe spots, Setup Pocos using a normal indy, move in Epithals in and to the safe and cloak. once you have enough PI to move, scan all sigs and get all WHs to 100% .Warp to Whs with an empty Epithal at 100km and check the WH type. Warp away and back again and jump through (bookmark both sides) and see where you are . Then just run around scoping your PI and spamming Dscan.
The fit I would use is below.
Notes MWD is not as useful as an AB for a few reasons. If you are tackled its by a scram 90% of the time. If you are scrammed by 1 scram and being bumped (people know you have warp cores) you can pulse your AB to escape. You should never have to use your Prop anyway.
Fit is mostly Meta as PI alts often don't have good skills. Hyperspatial help when you are being chased by cruisers (if you derp and warp to a planet or next poco) also when traveling to drop off PI in HS.

The MWD is there for MWD/Cloaky trick, which is essential for avoiding gankers while taking product to market. For this you'll also need an Improved Cloak.
I have lost enough Epithals up the Jita/Amarr pipe to have learned the necessity of always using MWD/Cloak when travelling with a full load of PI.
