RP fluff is to mmorpgs what reality television shows are to television media: they are low cost, extremely high yield media that have the pretense of content but no substance. This "EVE bible" has been talked about to death in a dozen dev-blogs before this except you called it an art book then and the subject has been broached on the forums who knows how many times. Meanwhile, our fanart and player submitted screenshot and video section are unbelievably out of date and dysfunctional. Priorities CCP, priorities.
Consider this:
i. I could care less about the weekly chronicles, their saving grace is moody image, the writing isn't engaging. Who cares about the origin of pods if I don't know how many AUs are in a light-year or the turret/missile damage formula?
ii. I don't follow events and given how disparate and poorly documented and poorly written the "player news" is don't ever plan to either. [I was in Criliere earlier and saw the ring structure and the two stations seperated embarassingly close to one another. It was spectacular for all the wrong reasons.] P.S. Hire English majors to do your writing if you want to be relevant.
iii. You billed Eon as a means to offer players exclusive Eve content--in reality it was just content dredged from the forums and what else? More RP! I wanted ship concepts and all I got were cliched stories and inane interviews.
Warcraft has an immense compendium of roleplay garbage, several dozen (hundred?!) pages by the looks of things, explaining ancient lore and irrelevant tripe. I can't imagine any sensible person reading all that, much less buying game related novellas (LOL!)--I thought Eve was largely about the triumph of substance over such things. Eve is at its best when played not watched, not talked about and certainly not roleplayed.
CCP, RP is absolutely irrelevant in the face of EVE's realities. What we need fundamentally is more and better CCP driven documentation--when I can't find a list of COSMOS items ingame, or see the Machariel among other ships' stats in game and find the official item db out of date, we have a serious problem on our hands.
Wow can get away with its RP because the game info is all there on the site and accessible--that CCP plans to have a wiki so players can submit more documentation is mind boggling. We've been doing it since day one, the tracking guide and the capital jump planner, among other apps being good examples of CCP intransigence.
After documentation, CCP needs a revamped bug report and petition system to identify problems with the game and better handle the request in a reasonable and substantive way. ___

I seriously hope you are not forgetting all the rich stories and characters experienced and made by players. If you're going to make a bible about EVE's setting it would be a crime to omit everything the community has done in the past 6-7 years.

There's people who code, there's people who do graphics, and now there's people who write the prime fiction and there's people who make the new WIS stuff. They're all different groups of people doing different things, and unless you want to stick unqualified personel on bugfixing i don't know what you're saying here.
edit: Some people like RP aswell. There's entire alliances in the game that do this, there's more than enough people who will start RPfng with the new features. EVE is an MMORPG, not an MMOG. If you want a game without any background to play your character to i'd suggest tetris.

We are working on a player guide, something more updated and maybe more detailed than the current one, but no ETA unfortunately. It will come when it's done.
We also have an Evelopedia planned, no ETA there either, though it's something I personally really want so I troll people every chance I get for it to come faster.
.....thankyou for this clarification.
Seriously i thought he was just trying to fill the dev blog quota for this month...
I imagine its semi impossible to guide people through eve... hell you cant even teach it.. you have to show people and then let them learn most of it... still, good work, look forward to the glossyness

Do YOU think the those people writing the stories volunteered to do it out of the goodness of their hearts? Do you think that others at CCP won't be givin a chance to add thier own input into the history of the world?
The fact is that CCP had to pay those people to write the stories. They didn't hire more CS representatives, they didnt hire more testers, they didnt hire more coders, they didnt hire some people to hunt full time for macroers, they didn't hire someone to write a guide for the game, they didnt hire someone to improve the website. They spent their money trying to improve the fiction behind the game.
Once they do that I can say with almost complete certainty that some of the fiction will pave the way for new features or areas which will then have to be coded by programmers who now WON'T be fixing our bugs. Unless that happens to be to completely seperate departments in which case add to the list above that they also didn't higher coders for new features.
That is the point that Erotic Irony and others are trying to point out. You can be reasonably sure that no department in CCP works in a vaccuum. You can also be sure that CCP does not have unlimited funds.

QFT! Quoted for emphasis! /signed!
The problem here is not the fiction or the fact that someone is writing it or even being paid to write it. The problem is that money is being spent on things like this when it should be pointed at fixing the game. "It's not my job to fix things." Then why the hell are you here? "It's my job to make more things that need fixing."
/me sighs and shakes her head...
If the game wasn't still full of bugs that have been here for years (see the Known Issues page which ITSELF IS BUGGED!), slapped together content that appears to be an afterthought (why put acceleration gates in dozens of missions and then leave out the bloody gate model itself?), and node deaths every time people try to participate in Eve's so called PvP "vision" people wouldn't care what CCP spends their money on. However, this is not the case and to see them throw money at silly things like this when the bugs get ignored is disheartening to say the least.
It's CCP's money. They can spend it on whatever they like. That doesn't make it smart though.
My advice: CCP, forget all this fluff and glitter! Fix the bloody bugs first then come back later and have at this kind of stuff all you want when the game is out of beta!

considering how long it takes the eve-online item database to get updated with additions to the game, I hope your putting as much thought in to keeping whatever it is you're doing up to date, as you are to making it in the first place :)

I'm sorry but this blog does not deliver.
Specifics are your friend.
They merged with WW - the people who have no idea what Jove are, how people got to the EvE galaxy etc. They want to make them to publish books, paper games, comics about EvE world. It's good to keep it consistent with game world and with each other. To make it work they need some sort of an encyclopaedia. They need to create a compendium of knowledge about EvE world.
It will not define how large Charon cargo bay is or how good blasters track. It will cover all races, bloodlines, history events, major people - all important and less important stuff from EvE world.
