So, been reading up on the back story of Eve, and I never realised there was so much to it.
One thing that stuck out was the absence of the Jovians...from what I have read they were a big part of the universe and yey until now i'd heard no mention (been playing longer than this character)
Were they ever a playable race? and are there any plans to bring them back into the story?
Perhaps someone here can fill me in on their relevance to the universe.
Thanks in advance. |

I admit I'm not terribly deep into the lore of EVE - but as I understand it the Jovians are a mysterious lost race who may/may not be tied to wormholes/sleepers/drifters and may be brought back into modern lore in a more active role at some point - but no guarantees. |

Thanks for that, seems like they were one of the abandoned tribes when the gate closed..strange how they are not a playable race then. Am I right in thinking that they developed capsuleer technology and made it available to the other tribes?
It'd be kinda cool to play as the shady weird self-altering master-race. |

That seems to be the leading theory yes - much of our technology comes from them -and sometimes "new" jovian technology is "rediscovered". They kind of are a playable race, as I think some of the CCP-only equipment/etc is classed as "jovian" - but I'm not sure that is part of the official lore, it may just be the developers having some fun.
The true playable races however have always been limited to just the 4 main empire factions: Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, and Minmatar (listed in alphabetical order, lest anyone accuse me of favouritism lol) |

The Jovians have influence but no presence. They are the elder race and a lot of our technology is based on their hand-me-downs. The invincible CONCORD police cruisers are Jovian tech. Sleeper technology which gives us T3 ships is 2nd empire Jove. For what they've been up to recently: https://community.eveonline.com/backstory/chronicles/inheritance/ |

"Although definitely human, the Jovians often seem to the other races as though they are not, the reason being that they embraced genetic engineering as the way to solve any and all the problems which plague the human race....Years of genetic engineering formed of the Jovian Disease, a deadly disease that only afflicts the Jove, which has caused millions of Jove to die as a result of interfering with their basic instincts."..

Especially the short paragraph about the Third Jovian Empire of today's New Eden is important (infuence of jovian technology on capsuleers and ships)

Jove space exists in the game, but it's cut off from the rest of eve space, we (the players) can't get there at the moment. As I understand it, the devs use Jove space as a testing area on TQ where players can't interfere with the tests. Apparently the yearly player alliance pvp tournament is held in a special system in Jove space.
CCP has said that player built stargates *might* be possible in the future, but no specific timeframe has been given. With that in mind, it might be possible for players to connect to Jove space using a player built stargate, if CCP actually adds that feature.
On a slightly different note, go to youtube and search for "Clear Skies". It's a set of three unofficial videos set in Eve, and Jovians feature prominently in them, especially in the third vid. They were made a few years ago so the graphics look a bit dated now but they're still fun. The people who made those vids have said they don't have any plans to make more vids about Eve. |

In-character:
The Jovians are a race of humans (like the other 4 races) who didn't go through the thousands of years of dark ages after the EVE wormhole closed. As a result, their tech is very advanced, and they don't make themselves visible because they don't want to introduce advanced tech into societies that aren't ready for it. A lot of our tech is based on whatever we could get from them or what they released to us intentionally.
In-game:
You can show info on the NPC corporation that owns any station, then click the icons for the empire they belong to, and then look at the relationships between the empires (in the show info window). You'll see the Jovians listed there, and you can also see the "member corps" that are associated with them. So they do have representatives, in-game.
More recently, other post-human offshoots have been introduced - Drifters, Sleepers, etc. These either survived via cryo-stasis, or by moving their minds to a virtual reality environment, or have died and are now archaeological ruins and left-over database banks.
Out-of-character:
This game was made by CCP devs because they liked to play this kind of game themselves. Initially they reserved the Jovian race for themselves, and would appear in-game flying Jove ships. Thus, the whole "all our ships come from the Jove" concept is an inside joke - all our ships come from CCP. But anyway, after a few early incidents where players immediately attacked the visible Devs and managed to kill their ships (with 99% resists to everything, btw), and get their hands on horribly overpowered loot that had to be manually removed from inventory, the devs decided to no longer appear in-game in any sort of ship, other than organized events where they fly average ships like us and roleplay various NPCs for us to interact with.
The Jove regions are indeed an area of space that has no stargates or wormholes that connect to the rest of the player areas, and CCP devs can use that space to bug-test various things directly in the TQ (tranquility server) environment.

If you really want to dive deep into the lore of EVE, I'd highly recommend Mark726's EVE Lore Survival Guide. It starts at the beginning and provides tons of information collected from various canon sources.
There's also Hydrostatic Podcast which does frequent lore panels about various lore-based topics.

There have been a few cases where players were able to sneak into Jove space. Such as when Wormholes were first introduced. Devs forgot to make exceptions for Jove systems ^^

I played with a guy once that claimed he played a Jovian character during early beta. The guy was on an '03 toon so I believe him. He said that Jovian characters were removed during later beta testing. |

I doubt players will ever be allowed to create Jovian characters. That's reserved strictly for CCP Dev's.
However I do think CCP will continue the story of the Jove later on after a few more expansions. When CCP first announced Player Built Stargates, that was before the appearance of the Jove Observatories and Drifter NPC's in Empire space with the Jovian Stargate system going offline.
In my opinion that's a very good introduction for Player Built Stargates.
In my opinion exploring Jove space will be very slow due to Player Built Stargates requiring extremely large amounts of resources. I'm sure there will be Jovian Technology available as loot from new exploration sites, probably giving Capsuleers a fighting chance against the new Sleeper / Drifter menace. Might even be new Jovian Agents available as well, hopefully with a Jovian Loyalty Points store.
Anyway, it'll happen eventually. The pieces are slowly being placed and incorporated into the Lore and game. We just need to be patient.

To drift into RP a little bit, the thing that kinda bugs me is that CCP is presenting the prime fiction races like the Jovians at a kindergarden level of social maturity and organization.
Specifically, there's a lot of player politics in EVE, and there's a lot of politics in RL, yet all these races act completely unified, as if they have a single mind, as if there is no bickering or opposing sects. Even when their racial background says they love to splinter into opposing bickering sects, we never see that, they always act unified.
And also, if you think about it, the general populace doesn't have access to the gates, or to ships, or to most of the tech. If something wipes out CONCORD or whoever has the passwords to the gates, we'll be able to do ... nothing. So some of these master plans that the prime fiction NPCs come up with, to destroy all capsuleers, or to destroy everyone in the EVE Universe, they don't really make sense.
And it also doesn't make sense when your race is down to, say, 150 civilians (like the Jove), that you've maintained full control over all the passwords and security measures required to operate ALL of your tech, no matter how fringe. They should have lost control over their tech long ago as their population dwindled. We should have seen this process. |

CCP developers had Jovian character avatars long ago.
As for the Jovians themselves, see this. (design by Aedre Lafisques) Its from this panel.

Yea,
this is pretty standard in fiction though. In the Belgarion series the Sendarians were all farmers, the Cheriks sailors, etc, etc. In sci-fi people from planet x are all loan sharks, and people from planet y mercenaries....

Old tech comes in 2 flavours - Old Earth - Jovian'ish'
old earth tech is super scary powerful jovian'ish' tech is just scary powerful
pod & clone tech is jovian cast offs
the old empress (jamilla is kinda dead ?) equipped a battleship with an old earth weapon and then promptly destroyed an entire cap-ship fleet with it
in player tech terms, it was a first iteration AoE doomsday more commonly seen on Titans so in theory a titan sized old earth weapon is probably a star killer and that's never going to end well for people on planets in orbit around said star |

I do not trust the Jove. They've been manipulating space politics for quite some time, only introducing whatever tech advances their goal. Never mistake 'powerful' for 'benevolent'.
They've recently retaken their seat on the council (will provide link when I find it), following a Drifter-related (or was it Talocan?) discovery and soon afterwards Xenuria got elected for CSM. Coincidence? I think not!! |

If I remember my last bit of reading of the cronicals there are very few jovians left and I think the last one is/ or will be dead soon. I will have to go back and reread but that was the impression I got. Jovian space is still in the game. CCP uses it to test things, and technically is also the HQ for the ISD's but you wont see us much in game (Except STAR)
