So, I was on yesterday evening and there's a bit of a drama in local chat, some smack talk floating about.
Turns out a guy who's char is less than 2 days old is floating around in a Merlin, throwing about duel requests and then destroying anyone who picks up the challenge..quite a few bad vibes floating around, accusations of hacking, apparently he's taking no damage and dealing far more than he should be.
So..point of this post is..what gives? is this a real thing? are there 'Hackers' (a term that was being well used yesterday) or is there a possibility that the guy was legitimate?
Cheers in advance. |

Some more info would be handy, like what system we're talking about here.
With the coming of Skill Injectors, character age no longer counts for squat as an indicator of a pilot's SP. So let's assume we're talking about a pilot with perfect skills for the Merlin, its supports, gunnery, engineering, navigation, shields, biology, cybernetics, etc. Let's further assume that this pilot is pretty cluey about frigate combat.
Who was he fighting? Genuine newbros? If so, they're toast.
We're probably talking about a Merlin using a high end set of the new shield-slave pirate implants (whatever they're called), throw in a Links alt in the system and possibly even some Improved Combat Boosters (which are now legal in hisec).
So no, I don't think you're looking at a 'hacker'. You're probably simply seeing someone flying multiple billions of ISK worth of Merlin+Implant+Links++++++ etc.
edit: if they're doing this in a newbro system, they're being a little lame IMHO. However, you still need to accept the duel.
Personally, I think you have a great target here for a potentially very profitable Suicide Gank. Get a couple of friends in dessies, have someone accept a duel with him in a brick-tanked Frigate, once he's scram/webbed, warp in the Catalysts and BLAMMO!
Have someone stay behind to smartbomb the pod.

Yeah, the Merlin is a monster in the right hands (max. skills, drugs, links, implants). All legal, but deadly to newbies. If this was happening in a rookie/starter system, this is probably worth a petition.

There's always the possibility of bugs and exploits; we're not allowed to discuss them on the forums, and CCP has asked that if you believe there's a bug or exploit, create a ticket to report it, and they'll look at the extensive server logs and figure it out, then take action.
However, there are several recent features to the game that can provide an explanation:
1. Rich players can create an alt, spend several trillion ISK to use skill injectors, and get that alt to 100 million skillpoints (can fly most ships, use the best guns and the best gear, etc) within hours. From your point of view as a player, you won't be able to tell whether a new character is truly a newbie, or someone's alt, and what skills they have.
2. T2 weapons, T2 ammo, T2 shields/armor, overheating modules, high grade implants, boosters (drugs), and being in a fleet with someone who can provide fleet bonuses from an off-grid or cloaked command ship, all these taken together can multiply the performance of even a measly T1 frigate by 3x - 4x. The ships have been balanced this way so that the 10 year old veteran players find them useful and stay interested in the game.
3. "Station games" are possible - fighting near a station allows someone to abuse the game mechanics to dock up and repair at the slightest danger to their ship, while in combat. They would appear invulnerable.
4. Logistics ships allow remote repairs, and while the mechanics of a duel should also cause aggression on the repair ship, it's possible people miss it. |

Hi Sec, Caldari starting zone around one of the War academy's. I was only an observer to the riot, and ignored my own duel request.
Not all of the victims were spanky new, but yes the majority would be.
I know little about where to check for stats on kills/damage etc, but the ones shouting were convinced that the guy was not playing fair.
Obviously I am not going to name the guy (A russian player), I added him to my 'avoid' contacts list, but not sure if from there I could post or obtain any of his ship setup data.
I just wondered, as I was under the impression that actual Hacking did not happen in Eve.
Thanks for the reply. |

actually, Coercers or Thrashers throwing EMP ammo would be better than Catalysts for this particular target.

Well, duel requests allow him to pick his targets; he can simply refuse to duel a ship that would kill him. Destroyers flown by high-skill characters, or cruisers fitted with anti-frigate weapons, would probably make a dent in that Merlin, even with all the hidden boosting and support.
Create a ticket if you want, though. It's not a bad idea for CCP to look into it. Any game can have exploits or bugs. |

I think a ticket or two were already sent in, aside from some smack talk when I declined his duel offer he didn't do anything to me, so it'd not be fair to report him. I also did not witness any of the 'deaths' at his hands, just the aftermath in Local |

Link the system and what day it happened...it would help.
Any tech 1 ship can be deadly in the right hands...2 day old or not...skill injectors (damned infernal evil tool they are) likely are to blame for the surge in prowess. |

How and where did you get all that info? lol
I am soooo new.
The guy was allegedly taking no damage at all, against ships that apparently packed a much bigger punch, but like I said, I was not there 'live' I only flew through the wreckage so to speak. |

This can actually be reportable and he can be banned as Uitra is a system where using a new player's lack of knowledge to your advantage is a bannable offence.
Duelling I'm not 100% sure falls under this category but I would expect it would since the "duelling" concept from other games means you do not actually die.
I think the duel pop-up may allude to this fact, but I still think it's a scumbag thing to do. |

He logged off when they advised him that they were reporting him, after he dropped a shed load of Russian into the chat box. i hunt people , its pretty much all i do in eve bar shiptoast on the forums all i need is a name to go on and im good.
yeah that's just rookies knowing no better. looks like hes sig/speed tanking most/all of the damage the newbros are throwing at him. the gm's will tell him to move his show out of the rookie systems where he will find it much harder to do this.

He probably went to ZKillboard and searched for solo Merlin kills in highsec.
edit: Go to zkillboard.com . Search for "Merlin" (the ship). Click on "Solo". 2nd page (22. July) has a bunch of solo kills in highsec done with a Merlin. Click on that guys name and you'll see he also lost one.

In-game information is available on the internet, via people's API links, or via CCP's Crest interface. In any case, there are public killboards where details of all the ship kills / deaths are automatically posted and analyzed.
People are asking for the pilot's name or solar system so they can go check; from the details you can see how the ships were fitted, and perhaps explain this whole "invulnerability" thing.

Links are possible, but it seems more likely that it's just an alt with some experience (not tons or he would know to fit micro aux instead of reactor control) or a new player that actually did some research on how to fit ships.
Nothing he killed stood a chance against any properly fit ship. Most of them were missing modules...had data/relic analyzers etc.
However, he really shouldn't be picking fights in the rookie system at all and I would not be surprised if he's punished for it.

This is my thought as well.
Though... being a "newbie character" does not necessarily disqualify the potential use of drugs. I am thinking drugs, implants, and/or a fleet booster that reduces sig radius (see: sensor footprint). Such a setup would make a Merlin impossible to hit with poor skills, fits, and experience.

A ship poorly fitted for PvE doesn't stand a a chance against ship (more or less) properly fitted for PvP.
And if the guy who was in the newbie system really was a vet in a newbie character, he should have been helping the newbies afterwards by giving freebies and/or information (because that is what I used to do when I went to newbie systems to ruffle some feathers). This particular situation I would petition.
