On my screen resolution, I find myself confusing the "fitting" icons with "contacts" a lot, and also "map" with "market". One could drop the circle from the fittings icon and enlarge the ship to create a more distinguishable shape; and drop the route path from the "map" icon and emphasize the stars.
Here is my rather incompetent doodle on how they look now and how I would like them better:

...or we could have distinguishable icons with colours?
Oh wait -*snap*- "research" proves modern unicolour icons are better and therefore my eyes must be wrong. |

I'd like colors. These four are IMHO the worst in terms of UI design, though, and could be fixed with relative ease. |

I know ;-)
Bit of backstory: CCP changed them (under loud protest from pretty much everyone I might add) some .... 9? months ago. They used to be full colour. |

EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.
Hello, Mr Carebear. Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Not a bad idea. CCP, let us wear pants on the head in the character appearance customization window. Physically animated (pants are easier to animate than hair).

Color is only for the colorblind. CCP knows better than the rest of mankind. How dare we deny them their freedom of similar shaped icons for "our sanity's sake". Some fruit-company dude said it's all the rage now and we are all dumb.
Then we got the new brackets in space which look like upside down "eject" buttons or angry Super Mario's Gameboy (one) mushrooms.
Funny thing is, I still need longer to find the right icon while being focused on a different part of the screen. Oh and you might need a map of what icon is supposed to be what so they you don't accidentally "open" a frigate (the wreck icon used to look like a frigate icon).
Eve Minions is recruiting. Learn from about pvp, learn about ships and how to fly them correctly. Small gang and solo action in high, low and nullsec and w-space alike.
We will teach you everything you need and want to know.

But what are your alternative suggestions? The Fitting service icon is pretty much not changeable because it replicates the fitting window's iconic module circle. What is better suited than a price rally chart for the market? Or better suited than a star chart for the Map? And for Peoples and Places? That window contains not just your personal contacts but also saved places and bookmarks and is mostly used for searching people. What could you change there? A person in a magnifying glass (2 universally understood symbols) are pretty much the lowest possible denominator for these functions.
So, icons themselves are pretty much set in stone, especially considering the dimension limitations of the icons. Even though my muscle-memory has kind-of accustomed itself to the new icons, I still find myself struggling to find the right icon in some circumstances, especially under stress, because all the icons just look too much alike due to the single color display. Colors would be the only way to improve that. Or going back to the old, non-monochrome icons, which had the same basic symbols, but displayed in a more varied, distinguishable way.
The most obvious solution, however, is not to place 2 round icons or 2 charty icons right next to each other. ^^

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

Also, learning to use the keyboard shortcuts to open these windows may prove easier for you.
