I was in the process of reading a news article on 3D printing and it got me wondering. We have all these shiny 3D models in game and the coding it would take to render them in 3D to run through a 3D printer. What would be stopping CCP from using said technology to create on demand 3D printed models in any size or shape of any 3D object within the Eve universe for people to purchase?
You could go one step farther and reduce shipping by having 3D printing available in different countries as well and then shipping within those countries to save on shipping costs.
I realize that they wouldnt be painted, much like a model or figurines arent, and could be hand painted by the consumer if they so like.
So I am kind of curious if this is something CCP has put any thought into doing seeing as turning the 3D models into printable code shouldnt be a difficult task. Oh and yes I am itching for the store to reopen.
Another side question would be the availability of such 3D model code for us as players to do this ourselves if they have access to 3D printers. Perhaps as a per run style fee or something.
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

But no I am kinda curious how close the 3D models are and given the other forum post from the guys that did the small naga models I assume that its quite possible to do and would negate a crapton of the shipping issues that the UK/Euro people had seeing as stuff from the last store was shipped from the US. For us NA folks that wasnt as much of an issue.
But snarky is your middle name so.... Its okay Bumble your still a moustachioed hero to many.

Not sure if it still works but you used to be able to extract them using tri-exporter
Can't remember how, don't care enough to figure it out again but have at it, some google searching with triexporter and eve should yield results.
The biggest problem with 3D printing is it's expensive. It's getting cheaper but it still does't make sense for mass production as it's still considerably cheaper to mold things.

Yes that was sort of the implication in the article I was reading as well. I was just more curious about the 3D models themselves as a template for such a thing as well as the legalities in relation to ownership of the models and/or code. As CCP owns everything really. I would assume for personal usage it might not be an issue but more for sale.
Thanx for the info I shall go look around. Was more an idle curiousity than anything else.

Tri-Exporter is what you seek.
I have messed with it myself. Good luck.

You would likely use the 3D printer to create a model to be used for creating molds.
The advantage of the 3D information is that the 3D prints and molds could be made and production done regionally. Keeps your shipping, customs, taxes etc lower and would also benefit the manufacturer for whatever local business perks they can qualify for.
Otherwise you would just mass produce them in the cheapest labour market and export globally.
Of course you license the items from CCP (ie pay xxx amount per unit sold). |

I've seen several people take (for personal use) the 3D data via Tri-Exporter, clean up the 3d data then do a 3D print out. Still pretty rough detail wise. The thing to do would be to do one very high resolution 3D printout master. Clean up that model as best you could. Then cast a mold of it to which resin dupes could be made. Same process but a styrene plastic model kit company could be contracted to do the same thing to produce kits. After all the licensing details were worked out. |
