So now the day one patch is out and people are streaming the game. After watching for several hours I'm not as excited about this as I was when it was first announced. Hello Games have delivered on their concept but the experience of exploring planets seems disappointing, as there's only flora and fauna to discover. You walk around shooting rocks with your laser and uploading your discoveries but there's nothing cool to find. You won't be stumbling upon ancient alien settlements and suchlike. In fact there are virtually no buildings at all other than the identikit trade stations and landing platforms. The planets merely exist as elaborate mineral deposits for you to upgrade your ship with so you can keep going towards the centre of the universe.
It's not my intention to deliberately 'hate' on the game as I was really looking forward to this, but I fear it suffers from the problem of being very wide but very shallow. There's no doubt No Man's Sky is a technological achievement but what's the point of having 18 quintillion planets if there's nothing interesting on them? |

I dont like the art direction and general feeling of the flight and how the game presents space and transitions to space from planet. So unrealistic to the point it doesnt feel like a space at all, but a dream.
But I had more believable dreams abaut space and space battles.

Watching the streams today it turns out it's an iOS version of Elite, so glad I didn't fall for the hype and preorder. |

I admit, I laughed, while trying to not remember some drunk nights I had in college...
What I wonder is how many times the "new game is coming, EVE better do something" types have to be disappointed that the newest "messiah" game doesn't live up to the hype before that stop proclaiming the end of EVE is nigh

Oh the only reason this was supposed to be an eve "killer" was the outragious triple A marketing budget sony threw at them. People would not be frothing at the mouth as much over this if they had not fallen into the hype for it. If they thought of it as an ambitious indi game (which it is) there may well be less knashing of teeth and so on.
I hope it the best of sucess and i will most likley pick it up at some point but i think ill let the dust settle first.

Did a single person ever say that No Man's Sky was going to be an EVE killer?
Anyway, seems to be a fair bit of discontent over the game at present. Bit of a love it or hate situation. Maybe in the months ahead the devs will make improvements, but until then I'm out, especially with the game costing over forty quid. |

I totally did not like it since day one, since I watched it for first time years ago.
I Have seen a game that I like more, it makes a lot more sense, have a lot worse graphic and it is about exploration also, but also will induce a strategic thinking: Out There Omega. It captures the feeling of a struggle to survive and makes even simple choice, what star next to visit, a challenge. Since you always dont have enough of anything. In wast, unexplored space, you will be lost as a baby in a forest, without parents that could lead you out of it. You will die a lot in that game. You will remember what you did wrong. Damn, they even officially have a skeleton in a spacesuit as a backgroud for the game title. With a reason.

Jesus, two years ago. Did you actually bookmark that? Anyway, I didn't see the OP say that NMS was going to kill EVE, so I don't know why you posted it. I did see the usual forum trolls come out with the ol' "EVE is dying/x will kill EVE" memes (yawn).

To be fair, Star Citizen already surpasses EVE in many things after a year of developement.
I came back to EVE after a year off and I 'm not feeling it. Star Citizen on the other hand comes in waves. Content is slowly trickling in every update.
A persistent universe is slowly shaping up.
I already play more SC than EVE.
EVE is stagnant. I suppose it technically has more content than SC right now, but its not progressing. SC is.
"Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby".
If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down.

The greed of the developer is the only thing that SC has that surpasses Eve, unlike RSI/CIG CCP left the scamming to the players.

When first launching it seems a poor game with horrible frame rates and can be initially frustrating. Default options in the graphic settings limit the frame rate to 30...ramp that up to max sorts that out. The art style might not be everyone's cup of tea. I'm not sure if I'm still doing a "tutorial" or not, I'm finding "restore points" to save the game and 2 restore saves in options. I've repaired my ship and taken to the stars (I've always liked space to be black, never liked blues and greens). I've landed on a space station which had the decor of a Tron inspired interior and upset an alien (think I went wrong with the tutorial) Returned to a planet and had a 15 minute walk to meet an unidentified life form. Now I've to return to the station and sort out my jump drive.
After initial frustrations its growing on me. It really captures a sense of being lost in a universe. You can explore on foot, find alien relics to learn a few words of an alien language to make communication easier I hope, feed life forms or harvest them. I've found blueprints for equipment upgrades with no idea how to make them, had to monitor my suits power level and be mindful of entering hostile environments chipping away at my suits defences while I'm 10 minutes walk from the safety of my ship or outpost
It does have some irritating features akin to any pc game developed along side a console game such as Elite Dangerous and Fallout 4 such as the interface but NMS flight via k'board and mouse seems user friendly
It's a shame the developers haven't provided a forum and a central place to discuss and let players share views and help for other players
Guess you can say I'm impressed and hope I make some progress with the game |
