Hi all
I'm experiencing some weird graphical issues with Eve-online. The UI and the log-in window flickers and blinks. But not always, usually I can flip back and forth into windows to fix the issue, but lately that don't work either. I've tried nearly every setting in ATI Catalyst with no success.
There's a heat indicator in Catalyst that got my attention, it was currently at 74 degrees Centigrade, kinda high if you ask me. But the flickering/blinking issues sometimes appears even after the PC's been turned off over-night and the temperature is around 50...
Any ideas???
I've got an ATI Radeon X1900 (512 MB) card, on an AMD 64x2 Dual Core 5200+ computer with 2GB. Running Windows XP MCE ver 2002. I'm running Eve in 1920x1200 pixels, fullscren, Z-buffer and 60 Hz.

Are you using the latest Catalyst driver?
Also did this issue occur all of a sudden or has it been like this for a long time?

Yes, I'm using the 8.342.0.0 drivers dated Feb 02 2007 and Catalyst 7.2.
It's been like this for awhile... At least since I'm playing Eve... only about 10 days old... But it's not all the time...

I'm getting this same flicker also. I have definitely determined it to be a UI issue. System Specs:
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ 3GB Corsair XMS PRO ABIT FATAL1TY AN8 RADEON x1900xt 512MB
When running two window clients, this issue occurs much more frequently (pretty much constantly) on atleast one of the windows (sometimes occurs on both, but normally just one very badly). The normal fix of changing graphics settings to something else (normaly to color depth) that normally works to fix this when only one client is running doesn't help. This flicker goes away when you hide the UI (CNTRL-F9) however that kinda of makes even unplayable at that point. :P I determined that the flicker is actually the video drawing white triangles of different shapes

I have the exact same issue. It is terrible and it happened all of a sudden.
I log in and can play fine for 5 minutes or so, then the screen starts flickering in all colors of the rainbow. Stripes and lines appear everywhere.
Can anyone help please?
I use an ATI9700pro

I had this for a moment on my ATI Mobility card in my laptop, however, changing the Z-buffer to 16 bits solved the problem for me.
You may want to enter the graphics settings and try a different Z-Buffer/Depth buffer setting yourself:

If you have upgraded hardware make sure you have power that meets the specs. By installing a power supply with higher W might just (often) solve the problem. poof

Damn...
I had the feeling my graphic card had gone fubar... So I bought a new one today, a GeForce 7300GT 256MB
However, I still get the "triangles" flying thru my screen... this happens after a few minutes of play.
I did play eve for 3 months without trouble, this happened to me all of a sudden.
What I have tried uptill now:
1. Cleaned my computer, removed dust. 2. Removed graphics card and put it back in again. 3. Checked if fans will still operating. 4. Checked for new drivers. 5. Reinstalled drivers. 6. Downloaded Eve client and reinstalled it. 7. Changed all the graphic settings in Eve. 8. Changed all graphic settings in windows. (resolution and some of the 3D acceleration options) 9. Bought a new graphics card..... ATI Radeon 9700 pro 128Mb >>>>>>>> Nvidia GeForce 7300GT 256Mb
Im gonna run a DirectX diagnostic, but Im kinda out of ideas beyond that...
Anyone know what I could do?
Thank you!

No problems with my X1950 Pro. I'm running Catalyst 8.33.
Have you tried uninstalling the Catalyst drivers and using the latest Omega drivers instead?
If the card is running at 74 C then I'd really look into some liquid cooling or something. The memory is probably running hot too and heat causes all sorts of weird problems.

This was what was sent as a response to my petition. To be honest I don't feel confident that this will fix it.
Please anyone that tries it and gets it to work this way let me know. For me it didnt. Im gonna re-petition it and I strongly suggest others who have the same problem to inform CCP. The game is near to un-playable at the moment.
Which is a real shame, it's such a great game.
Hi.
Start by visiting http://www.windowsupdate.com and install all recommended updates.
Install the latest motherboard chipset drivers: http://www.sis.com/download/agreement.php?url=/download/
Uninstall the current soundcarddriver and then install the latest one. You can find the latest driver here : http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ Note download all recommended drivers/files for your sound card.
Download the latest DirectX update and install ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en ). If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us again. We'll do all we can to help.

Sounds like it could be a directx problem. A new version was released in Feb I think so try that.

I'm running a ATI x1950 w/256 Ram and not having any problems, I also run Eve on my laptop that has a AMD Turion and ATI chipset and don't have any problems with it, Graphics wise that is. Sound, now thats a different issue, but Graphics I'm rock'n.
If you are having problems with your ATI/NVidia graphics...use a program called drive cleaner pro to wipe out all your drivers and do a clean install of them. Also update your DirectX.

Could somebody link me to the latest direct x drivers?
I downloaded and installed what I though would be the latest drivers.
EVE worked fine for about 10 minutes (in which i was proudly announcing to my buddies in corp chat that I had fixed my graphics bug!!) upon docked and undocked from a station and my graphics where FUBAR again.

It got a bit less after some patch ccp deployed a bit ago tho, so it might be eve related and not your computer.

Having same issues with my ATI Radeon X1900-series.
Can confirm following: * A month or two ago this was not happening at all in EVE, however I got these issues if I first played EVE and then logged out and started another game. * Slightly before the latest xpac this escalted (i.e. happened already in EVE, didn't have to log out/swap game), with the patch hitting I can't play for more than max 5 minutes before this is triggered, for some reason. * As other posters said, starting up a 2nd client makes it worse. * Today in a 100+ gang I noticed this flickering got really bad, in fact almost whole screen got white, while near jumpgates. With max zoom out I hardly got any flickering at all. * Apart from the flickering I have this usual one or two 'pillars' that points out like a horn from the ingame models (either a ship or a station).
What I have tried to do: * Uninstall driver and re-install both the old/original version that came with the card, as well as the latest driver. * Recently formatted my HD and first thing I did was to install the most recent version (without installing the old first) and that seemed to make this problem worse (!).
There is definately 'triggers', like opening a 2nd client or swapping between different games. Taking a guess I feel quite confident this is the ATI-driver that doesn't like EVE at all. Considering it also (recently, never did before) started to occur in other games, like old Warcraft3 and in WoW as well, this is not an issue with EVE not working well with ATI, this is ATI not working well with well.. most stuff.
Going to get a nVidia card next time. Never had this experience with nVidia before. If someone has some solution or tip of where to download alternate drivers for ATI until then it'd be appreciated.
Ah, also, I'm getting an error message from a microsoft driver that the ATI-update asked me to get. Can't recall the name of it but as it's related to the ATI-driver and the windows driver give an error message.. it's not really reassuring that the ATI drivers require some ms-driver - that isn't compatible with the ATI one. >.<
How to solve this? Apart from the obvious - avoid ATI?

My Nvidia card is doing the same, I switched from ATI to Nvidia and the problem persisted.
So I advise not to spend more money on a graphics card... Eve did something to my computer... (Xfiles tune )

alot of problems here sound like heat or power issues offhand....obviously hard to diagnose from a 1-2 sentence description.
First thing you should check is the fan on your vid card...vid card fans are notorious for going bad...especially third party ATI cards like sapphire.
If the problem started suddenly, say around the time summer started, and follow you to a new vid card...then general heat might be the problem in your case.
If you are someplace cold and it follow vid cards and you took the side panel off your case and have a fan pointed at your comp, might be a power problem. Power Supplies can go bad, especially if you were pushing it too hard to being with. As it degrades, the power gets noisier...and the vid cards having such high power demands and a direct plug into the power supply will usually start showing problems first.
If you clean out the whole computer, reinstall everything including windows, and still have the problem after checking your fans, try a new power supply.

I have the same problem but ive found it only seems to happen when runing two clients at once. If one goes white and laggy if i close the other one the one with the laggy white background goes back to normal straight away. I used to run two clients windowed for sometime with no problem but seems to have started around the time the cache folder moved.

I have this problem also using an x1900XT, found that using ATiTools and changing the default fan profile to keep the card below 70c to cure the problem, obviously a heat issue here, but only happened after REVs II was released, was fine before hand.

Just FYI: ATI and ATITools maker don't advise you to run them both together because the automatic fan speed controller on the official drivers conflicts with the ATITools fan speed controller.
Also, the ATI cards are rated at 110 degree's or so, and they un-clock themselves if it goes over a certain amount. You shouldn't be worrying unless it reaches the 90's. I myself have a machine with a H2900 and a X1900 and both seem to be running fine at the moment (with latest drivers).
Try reinstalling DX9, see if that helps any.

I have been having problems with my ATI noe for a year. some flickering of planets and belts but graphic wise ok, MY issue is that my screen goes blue and then monitor shuts down but pc is fine. when restarting its fine and it always says theres an unkown issue with my card.
thing is it was replaced 2 years ago and the same thing happened to the one b4 that.
Its only with EVE that i get this trouble with. No other game or video does this to me. its only EVE, it happens about once a month.
pc specs are P4 3.20 GHZ (under hardware/Devices.processors this comes up twice so i think i have 2?) 200 Gigabite memory storage 512 ram 9800 pro plus a secondary one the same ( it says under hardware devices)

You are exactly the same as me 1680 x 1050 res Ati Tools x1900gt 22inch monitor +17 inch monitor Zalman gfx Cooler
I also use two client like the rest of you. The problem tends to happen to me when i am in windowed mode and have two accounts up. I know that it ISN'T heat related because my gfx runs at about 50 in game. I know that it IS a Graphics Ram related issue one of the memory modules on my GFX is rooted, their is a program called burn in test that i have used to test my GFx card as well as other system elements. Give it a try see if your ram fails. I also know that i receive graphics glitches in other games although minor. For instance in counter strike source the barrels of some guns will appear to reach out to infinity or fingers will get texture spikes 3 or 4 times that of a character size. I will attempt to remove my DX and install a newer version, but it will be related to graphics ram, weather it is overheating, faulty, underutilized or various other possibilities.

Guys I ran both Chipsets and have had the exact same problem. Its EVE ffs! I had the game running when one of the patch downtimes (in april i think it was) was starting, the client closed and when i restarted the client after DT the graphics where Fubar, since then it has been Fubar (notice this problem only started for people during that period of this year). Furthermore when I run eve and after that play another game without rebooting the graphics in that game suddenly have the same issues. Eve is the only game that does this on my Computer. I have petitioned several times now and I keep getting reffered to the standard troubleshooting page on the eve-o forums, and they keep asking me for my Directx diagnostics report (which is perfect good order).

Same here.
I got a brand new Asus 2600XT card on a brand new Asus P5K motherboard and i have the same problem.
At second client, both tend to flicker from time to time. It is not an overheating problem as my GPU temp is at around 45-50* C.
it's a fresh Win XP install either so i dont think it DX fault.

Originally by: JA RULER I have been having problems with my ATI noe for a year. some flickering of planets and belts but graphic wise ok, MY issue is that my screen goes blue and then monitor shuts down but pc is fine. when restarting its fine and it always says theres an unkown issue with my card.
thing is it was replaced 2 years ago and the same thing happened to the one b4 that.
The blue screen is a Driver issue most of the time Try using omega drivers www.omegadrivers.net or goto an older driver that you were not having the issue with.
The planet flickering is something witht he eve client/servers on telling your comp how to render those graphics.. I beleive that CCP was working on them but it is goign to be all tied in with the updated engine they are building on, so hopfully by the end of the year we will see that.

Ok a little update with this.
Has anyone updated to 7.9 9/10/2007 on Xp 32 bit and seen if this fixxes the issue? (I have not done it yet i just saw the new driver today)
Is anyone experiencing this issue in Vista? I switched to Vista (dual boot with Xp) and the issue seems to not happen on vista.
I am running Vista 64 bit with 7.9 9/10/2007
Since I am going to be formating my xp drive i will tinker with it the best I can to see if there is something that will fix it.
Also im using a Gecube 2900XT 512 for reference.

Im not having a white screen, but i have the flickering effect since first patch after rev II. Im using a radeon x1800XT 256MB. I dont think its an OS problem because i tried it on winxp, vista 32 bit and also vista 64 bit, always the same problem.

I love Eve but this problem has to be solved asap. But im sure there will be no official answer for this problem till this thread has reached more than 10 pages. Do u guys know where i can find older radeon drivers ?

Same Problem here ATI X1950XT 256mb
starting the 2nd client in window mode messes up the background color and texturing = white background.
reseting driver settings fixes this for some time until it starts lagging badly again, and i have to do a 2nd reset.
oh, i noticed this problem back in the days when ati jumped from 6.9 drivers to 7-series drivers. using my old driver delivered with the gfx-card doesnt produce this problem at all.
i blame ATI.

Use the AMD GPU clock tool to lower it to 60-70% and it wont come again. Thats the solution for me. Aswell as using rivatuner to control the fanspeed on the card.
It seems to be related to the VRM on the cards.
Last ATI card I will own for a long time...

OK, I have a three PCs. One has an ATI X850XT XFire setup, one has an ATI X1650 Pro card installed and the last one has a GeForce 6600.
Now which one do I have problems running Eve on?
I'll give you a clue, it's neither of the PCs with the ATI cards.

Nice, raising fanspeed from 25% to 40% with Rivatuner has solved the problem. Thx Shintai

Hmmm it doesn't work for me. If its a cooling problem the flickering effect would concern user interface and 3d-engine. But for me its only the UI that is flickering. More suggestions please.

Edited by: Bratwurst0r on 27/09/2007 17:43:56 Edited by: Bratwurst0r on 27/09/2007 17:42:38 its not even a cooling problem (50¦max with standard fan-speed and 47¦ with 40% fanspeed)
seems the driver screws something up when he "thinks" it wont be cooled enough, but what do i know, maybe its only some old code line getting in the way.
edit: btw, it only works if the client is not open, i have to restart, put the rivatuner to 40% fanspeed, and then start the eve clients.
if a client is open, put the fan to 40% and open the 2nd client, it doesnt work. now, dont ask me what this is.

These included random restarts of my entire system, or a complete and total freeze requiring a hard power down.
My temporary fix was to unplug any extra peripherals to play eve (extra drives, cameras printers etc) and this seemes to have worked so well, I have purchased a more robust PSU. Will let ya know how it pans out.

Ya i think its that. I can run eve on on vista with no problems (Besides for very low frame rate under a light load)
It is a eve issue or its ati. I went and submitted a bug report to ati on the issue and linked this thread.

Guys have you tried the Omega Catalyst Drivers? They're kinda suped up ati drivers. I use a radeon 9700 pro with the 7.9 driver - ATI's own 7.10 would not run Eve for me.
www.omegadrivers.net
Dont have a solution for Nvidia Linux guys. Sorry!
I am upgrading for trinity - temporarily I am looking at either an ati x1650pro 512mb, a geforce 7200gs 512mb, an ati 2400hd pro 256mb, or a geforce 8400gs 256mb - Does anyone know whats better for eve - nvidia or ati? Is this bug limited to ati 2xxx cards? Which card will be fastest? I usually run 1280x960 fullscreen so will the extra memory make any difference? Is there a graphics card for eve comparison somewhere? Thanks JY

I just upgraded from an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro to a 2600 HD Pro on an AMD x2 and am now having model issues in game, certain models are not fully rendering (such as large pos batteries) and im getting random system lockups. Heat is not an issue as the GPU and system temps are runing well within line and iv swapped memory in addition to replacing my power supply for a larger one. Running the latest ATI drivers, latest motherboard firmware and latest windows updates -- this is really a ****er as my old rig never had a single issue and this new one - despite all the bells and whistles just isnt serving itself well with eve.

I had the same issues and noticed they vanished when i deactivated the ATI "AI" options in the driver.
Seems the "AI" makes the card overheat above all limits - which results first in flicker and then in system freeze when the card-bios pulls the plug.
Hope this helps

Edited by: Knoetje on 15/12/2007 17:24:18 Edited by: Knoetje on 15/12/2007 17:22:11 These problems could be with the client as the client is bugged. But also with ATI cards and drivers. ATI is known for heat production and I recommend everyone to use an aftermath cooler like a Zalman or a Thermaltake. These coolers will lower your GPU temperature by at least 20C and I speak out of experience.
The other problem is that ATI GPU's are power hungry and need a much more powerful PSU than nVidia does. This however doesn't mean that nVidia won't have the problems describes above. Before you all start throwing money at your PC's, which is great for future games, I recommend you all try different drivers. Sometimes the newest drivers aren't the best and you should all experiment to see which works the best. This can take time but with a little research you will see that certain drivers work better with certain games. This might solve the problem and it might not but it's worth a try.
I personally don't use ATI cards and haven't for years. I don't like the power usage of ATI cards and refuse to buy them as long as they use more power than they need to. However I have downloaded several drivers for my 8800GTS to experiment with and am still in the process of finding the 'best' one for EVE, though I doubt I will find one.
As a last resort you should all send in bug reports to ATI/AMD (or nVdia for that matter) and ask them for assistance.
I am an experience PC user with a very powerful CPU and a decent video card (high-end untill the release of the 8800GT) and even I get graphical problems like a white background from time to time and lots of artifacts. These problems are Trinity related as I don't have them in any other game and my PC never crashes while playing any other game than EVE.
Yesterday I finished Call Of Duty 4 for the second time (fantastic game) and I not once experienced the problems I'm experiencing now. I hope that either CCP or nVidia and AMD release a driver or patch to solve the countless problems that make the lives of most of the players a living hell and make the game not worth playing.
P.S. Comments like "Seriously stop using ATI, its the worst graphics chip ever! Get nVidia!" are not constructive and I will personally crush your fanboyism with many links to articles about the great successes ATI have had over nVidia over the years. So post something intelligent or stfu.

It's just completely baseless speculation but this bug somehow feels reminiscent of the bug in the old client where sometimes from certain angles you'd get "gate" icon over your ship along with the in gang icon, while from all the other angles the icon would show up at the edge of the screen.

I'm having similar issues with my Saphire Radeon x1900 GT. Only started patch before this last. It manifests as flashes and artifacts around open windows, not the ship and station. However, once it starts in Eve it extends over to another game I play, Anarchy Online - making it unplayable until a total system reboot.
Got so bad I decided to upgrade from win2k to winXP. Problem remains.
I run dual screen too. Have dual cpu's in a Uli-chipped, AS Rock 939Dual-Sata2.

Hi, I've an X1950Pro 512Mb with Catalist 7.10 (old catalyst are good too, i've updated it many times)
I had similar problems in the past, with revelation 2. Now is all ok.
I've tried to install the latest directx from web, like someone in previus post, and did not worked. So i downloaded the latest DircetX Redistribution (offline installer) and it installed many items. It worked
Try to download this, the latest redistribution, nov 2007: DirectX Redist (November 2007)
Hope it works for all of you.

Tryed to run 2 client on same PC, no problem at all.
Tryed to install ATI Tray Tool to get some more performances, launced 2 client, graphic issue as many of you and client crash each resolution change.
Removed Ati Tray Tool, installed RivaTuner, the same effect: graphic issue and unable to swap resolution.
Removed RivaTuner, back to standard ATI Catalyst overclock: graphic issue with 2 client opened but resolution change work.
Resetting clock on gfx board to standard values, no problem with 2 client on the same PC.
Try to reset all overclocked frequencies to standard values.
Did not tested AtiTool, but i can assume it will have the same effect of AtiTray and RivaTuner. I'm still using Catalyst 7.10.

I have found two "solutions" to the flickering problem:
1. Install Windows Vista (Not my choice)
2. Install another monitor (My choice)
I installed my old 17" as a second monitor to my 19" Wide and now I'm running main on the 19" and alt on the 17" and works like a charm, FPS 150+ with two Premium clients running.
