After reading some newb threads/guides, I decided to post my take on efficient missioning for new players. Firstly, every security mission on levels 1-3 can be efficiently completed in a properly set-up frigate. I recommend doing these missions in a frigate. In my case, it was a Punisher.
Advantages of this include:
- Nothing bigger than a destroyer can hit a frigate. So you need to worry only about frigate-level damage.
- A well set up frigate can break the tank of anything in those missions.
- Very efficient time spent. Level 3 missions net anywhere between 3 to 15 million ISK per mission.
Disadvantages:
- Missions like "A Million Little Pieces" can take some time. DPSing down the ore processing plant is a pain.
- Frigates have small cargo bays and may require several trips to get the worthwhile loot out
- Stasis towers and stacis ships can hurt you.
How to do:
- Buy "Connections" Skill Book ASAP. You should get access to level 2 missions almost instantly.
- Equip/rig frigate for full DPS and make sure you are cap stable with afterburner and a repair module.
- Put time into DPS skills first.
- When in mission, take frigates out first. Nothing else would hit you for much, even if it does actually hit.
- Enjoy

I envision a lot of newbies in atrons dying in the next few days....
You don't really explain why things bigger than destroyers can't hit you, because in reality: they can. If you're piloting badly though.
I don't know it's not as cut and dry as you list it here, yes a frigate CAN do even level 4s comfortably, but it's much more to do with your knowledge of the game rather than skills or fit. |

Yes indeed, level 3 missions can be completed in a Tech 1 Frigate. For a more enjoyable experience, all the skills pertaining to that ship should be maxed out. Mission completion time will be much quicker if the ship is fit with Rigs and Tech 2, Faction and Deadspace modules.
In combat always keep moving and definitely take out NPC Frigates first, especially those that do EWAR. With max skills and bling ship fit, most level 3 security missions can be completed within the bonus time. However most of the wrecks will start to despawn just before or right after mission completion. If planning to loot and salvage level 3 mission wrecks, a Cruiser or Battlecruiser hull will complete the missions much quicker allowing more time to collect the loot and salvage.
Definitely train up Social and Connections skills to advance mission level more quickly :
Social = increases amount of standing gained for completing missions. (5% per level) Connections = increases current positive standings with Empire. (4% per level)

Connections is an important skill for mission runners however it is low on the priorities list for new characters who should be training core skills instead. You know crazy things like weapons upgrades, applicable armor or shield tank skills, applicable turret or missile skills and we have not even started on the big ones yet like cap skills and afterburner skills, cpu skills and the list goes on.
Cap stability is a prayer for many new characters and adding in the mods to increase DPS only makes this worse since they will need most of those slots to achieve this cap stability.
Time into DPS skills is worthless if you do not have the tank, power grid, cpu and other fitting skills needed. A balanced approach to training skills is better in every way possible. As an example train all skills to level 2 then all skills to level 3 etc.
Ah the usual frigates first claim. In a way you are at least partially correct, however the various missions and the NPC in them combined with the skills, ship and fit of the person flying the mission will have an affect on this as well. To be blunt saying frigates always first is a crazy as recommending DPS skills before tank etc skills.
For those who follow your advice I see much stress and frustration ahead as they lose ships at a fairly constant rate and then get bored with the hassles you ideas would cause in general and quit the game. |
