My hope would be that we, as the community, could command enough respect with CCP that they are not only willing to listen to us, but partner with us. That means that we have to respect and partner with them as well. It's something of a two way street. this is the part people in reallife continuously get wrong ... and in the game, as it's the same political thing. That sentence is screwed up.
the only reason why any political entity holds power is because the people are so divided and selfish (aka too well fed and ignorant) that they deemed it the responsibility of the political entity to govern their lives.
Worse, as this goes on it only gets worse with every new generation, because they grow up in an environment where it's perfectly normal to be governed by someone who should absolutely not make decisions for millions without putting anything at risk themselves.* This is usually supported by propaganda from childhood days, where the political entity makes sure that the "proper mindset" is taught as soon as possible.
*(Which is of course slightly different for ccp, as they could lose their jobs... but it doesn't look likethat's going to happen, no matter what the doomsayers sing).
If you look at it from my perspective, ccp holds almost no power. The power is nothing but imaginary. Yes, they can ban people and pull the plug on the game, but once people start actually working together and see themselves as one group, things change considerably.
Though as the real world is full of people who are incapable of thinking for themselves, incapable of understanding self responsibility and incapable of realizing that richness and buying crap is not a fulfilling goal we end with a situation like we have now ... and it only gets worse.

On the subject of OP ships or mechanics, many of you know I claim some Game Balance and design experience with fairly large/popular PC games. Having sat in that chair and taken part in some extremely... energetic... discussions I can affirm that starship balance is about the hardest thing I've ever done in a game, both mechanics, build and politically.
What it really boils down to is personalities and human nature. You guys are dead on about there always being an OP ship. It's actually unavoidable because it's usually an error of omission rather than commission (intentional). I have seen them made intentionally but it almost never works out well. Most of these ships likely start as a template... (Generic Class Ship). Then they tweak to something they think they need the ship to do. They do some initial testing against what it's intended to do and other ships of the class/type. They refine again. Then they'll tend to pick a couple of ships that might be a good match for it and test. They'll tweak again. Generally if they are in a rush or don't care that much about it they'll release it for wider testing and publish it rapidly. This usually results in on of there things:
The ship works fine as intended (rare). The ship is OP. The ship is weak or fails at the task.
OP generally is easier to tweak and fix, but where a lot of designs go all sideways is in the weak or fails adjustments. They tweak it stronger but this almost always creates an OP ship and yes, such ships do appeal to players so sometimes the OP ships get to stay OP for a long time. This bugs me when companies do this kind of populist action, but as long as 3 out of 5 ships out there aren't the OP ships, it's usually not epidemic in nature.
So does CCP suffer from bait and switch on ship power? Possibly, but having been there and done that, I know the most likely answer is really due to lack of thoroughness, and most software companies suffer from it. If someone has some hard evidence of CCP doing these kinds of games, I'd love to see it as it would alter my perceptions of the company. So far I'm okay with giving them the benefit of the doubt.
P.S. Rumor is that Blizzard rotates what classes are OP to placate that classes players. In playing WoW for as long as I have, I have to say their is some evidence of it trendwise, historically speaking. It's entirely possible CCP is doing this as well with races and ships, but I hope not. I'd rather things stay in a reasonably good balance.

I don't disagree with your observations, but I'm not quite as willing to give up on people yet.
It's true that the player base does have the actual power, thus my comment about taking it, but I don't agree that all political entities thrive on the division of people. Ones that practice thuggery, despotism and tyranny certainly do, but benevolent ones don't.
Sadly you're correct that the benevolent ones are fairly rare in the real world these days. You're also right that the current ones are driven by selfishness, indifference, lack of tolerance and creating entitlement.
I'm not seeing that with EVE, per se, but I am seeing what you mean by each upcoming gaming generation feeling like they are entitled to things in game because some place else they got it from some other company.
So, I'm not quite connecting the logical dots you are in the way you are but then again, as Ralph pointed out, I don't have the long history with CCP.
What I can say is that you long time vets have a great deal of power in the player base. If you see yourselves as teachers, you can change the course of what the newer players see. However, being a teacher is different from being a critic.
Something that comes close to the sentiment I'm describing is this segment from Braveheart. While we're only talking a game here, I think you vets really have the chance to lead us, even more than the CSM and CCP, because players like me do listen, and do agree with a great deal you have to say.
I think it is possible to change the future but only if we do so by embracing the power we have and speaking clearly (and positively) with a very strong voice. I'm willing to help as much as I am able.

watch lists.....what to say?
original form: fair to everyone. current form: useless
had filed a petition after the change. i found the response to be uncaring (after waiting 2 or 3 weeks for a response).
we lost 1 pilot due to the changes. i had lapsed one account (the alts) in protest. was going to let this account go too - but was talked out of it by an alliance mate.
prosecuting war is 10x more difficult. (not crying about it, just pointing out a fact)
have been waiting for CCP to apologize to everyone for a really bad mistake (as they did with ship spinning a number of years ago). but i guess i'll be turning blue in the face, from holding my breath, waiting for an apology (that will never come).
