Edited by: Dee Vour on 13/03/2007 18:28:19 I've been playing for about 3 months now and my mate who's returned 2 days ago as a noob now has skills up to level... 5!!!! without breaking a sweat (i.e without training them)
Doesnt make sense as it takes me around 4 days to get a mere rank 1 skill to level 5... So pls someone tell me, is it just an impression or could that be that since recent patches it's a lot easier for noobs to start the game with more skills when comparatively (to them) a vet will have to spend grinding gruelling long hours training?

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 13/03/2007 18:27:53 I got a character back from the 2003 who has a few level 5's, couple of 4's and plenty of 3's.
It's the character creator and the decicions etc that make it possible. It's never really changed.
Though...if you're saying he has more SP then you in general, then you're a bit silly in your playing

I started EVE right before Revelations, and only had the few skills I started with. After patch, I had Gunnery 5, Spaceship command 4, and a few other lvl 4's that I can't remember... It was pretty wild.

Yes the new players start with more SP and so end up gaining a few more lvl 5's faster than some of the older players. However saying a vet will have to spend grinding gruelling long hours training isnt really an issue. You dont have to grind in this game to level up, so we play the game just as we normally would. Also, i speak for most of the people that i know when i say that after you've been playing close to 2years or more the leveling aspect isnt as much of an isssue. Your playing cos you like the game and the people within it... IMO thats one of the qualities that EVE has over every other MMO.

Edited by: F2C MaDMaXX on 13/03/2007 18:36:51 When you create a new character now, since november after the revelations patch, you will get 1 to 2 level 5 skills to start with a bunch of level 4's, you can also get learning skills to start with depending on the career path you choose, so you will train faster without having to train the learning skills straight away. ______________________________________ Natural Selection Developer

They're hardly uber. New characters now start with around 800k SP and it used to be much less. I belive they also start with 2 skills at lvl 5.

having said that yes, EVE is an awesome place and this skills thing hardly matters except sometimes when (if u remember when u were 3 months old) one can go apes through a 15 days skills cycle
anyway thanks all i'm gonna return to making some isk and check the skill O' meter every 5 minutes :P

Well anybody that had a character with under the new limit got a skills boast as well...
You can always play with your 2 alt slots to see if what you can get though. ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

Well...i'll try to say this again.
3 years, 16 days ago made character had these:
Drones / Rank 1 / SP: 250 of 1415 +1 Drones skills trained, for a total of 250 skillPoints.
Energy Systems Operation / Rank 1 / SP: 250 of 1415 Engineering / Rank 1 / SP: 256000 of 256000 Shield Operation / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 +3 Engineering skills trained, for a total of 301,505 skillPoints.
Gunnery / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 Small Hybrid Turret / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 +2 Gunnery skills trained, for a total of 90,510 skillPoints.
Mining / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 +1 Industry skills trained, for a total of 45,255 skillPoints.
Analytical Mind / Rank 1 / SP: 256000 of 256000 +1 Learning skills trained, for a total of 256,000 skillPoints.
Research / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 Science / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 +2 Science skills trained, for a total of 90,510 skillPoints.
Caldari Frigate / Rank 2 / SP: 90510 of 512000 Spaceship Command / Rank 1 / SP: 45255 of 256000 +2 Spaceship Command skills trained, for a total of 135,765 skillPoints.
That's two level 5's and 6 level 4's.
The new players are hardly "uber" compared to the old ones.

What's with the recent shower of people noticing the new character creation for the first time? -
If you go into your options menu, there's a difficulty slider. Put that all the way over to the easiest setting and you'll be fine. |

Yes, there's a recent patch were all characters were bumped/start off with ~800k SPs...

All theyve done is made starting a new characte easyer. And it could just be me but its also been easyer to make some isk this time around. But it could just be my aproach, im not running missions at all this time and just rating some.
If you took the best starting option in the past you started with 90k skilpoints (or thereabouts), now you start with a tad over 800k.
Its not that big of a deal, my character is 9 days old and i have 1.1mil now, so ive gained 300k in 9 days. Realy newbies now start at about where a 20-25 day old character was before the patch. And thats assuming all the starting skills are useful to you.
Its just making the game a little bit easyer for a newbie. No big deal. Im still sitting in a station for a couple weeks training learning before i can realy focus on much else anyway =/ what they should do is let all newbies start with 4/4 basic/advanced learnings (and give anyone who doesnt have them the skills) Then the game would be fun to make a newbie in =p

The new players start with about a month's worth of training. When you first start playing it takes you a while before you finally start training skills up to level 5. I think the thought of spending 7-14 days training a skill to level 5 seems crazy in the first few months of playing because there are so many other skills that you could be focusing on in that time. Even though the new characters get a few skills to level 5, there's still a lot of support skills they need to train to be effective with whatever equipment they are using. It's better to be well-rounded then to have a few lvl 5 skills. ----------------------------------------------------

yeah i see the good commercial sense in this change. CCP have probably realised the ratio of new clients leaving was to high and made a change to address the issue.
from another view point it's a game after all. and though EVE ethos gaming is 'long term' it's still a game after all. and a game should be agreable to play. not a head banging on the wall exercise. So some faster gratification makes for a more pleasurable experience and a sound change to EVE. thumbs up to CCP for the change.
well, very nice chatting to u guys. another 13 days to go for my Drone Interfacing LvL 5... time to find some distrations so i don't check the skills every 10 mnts

Make that 5 months. If you started 3 months ago, you would've gotten the same SP boost. New characters may start with more SP nowadays, but you got more experience - which probably counts for more than anything. =AFK=

Pre Revelations depending on what you choose on character startup you could get very low SP like Sara Dawn or Higher like This Man <- in fact not much more than that was possible out of the box .. don't have the exact figures now.
After Revelations hit you cannot make a character that has less than 800k SP and all the characters with less than 800k got bumped a few skills levels to approx 800-900 K's worth of skils
Hope that helps -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal | RaTTuS @ Skills Showroom

Actually the new system does provide quite a shortcut. Before Rev I looked like this and even though my birthdate was 06/23/03 I only had 1.6 mil SP.
It had taken until 2004 to get to that point (6 months), yes I had quit in 2004 (a diffrent dev incident) so when I came back after reading that Reverse Enginnering was going to be in Kali I looked at the new Avatar system. (yes I found out after that CCP lied in the interviews about RE, and after the 2003 incident I should have know better) Anyhoo I sent all my stuff and Isk to a buddy to give back to me and re-rolled my self.
I started this new avatar with 80% of the skills I had but lvl5s on the important skills, 27 ships and 35mil isk. It took less than a month to pass my old self and I can fly all but my Battle ships and LVL 4/5 indys.
Actually, since you typically fubar your first Avatar in every game (this one) with worthless skills being able to re-roll has been sweet. It was going to take 3 months min to get where I will be by the end of this month. This is due to there being none of the learning skills back then so learning skills for the older crowd was a slow process.
