I could have a ship for each configuration but I could also have a preset function which right now is sorely missing from eve.
Would make my life so much easier.
I know there are a lot trix available, like having containers with specific kits and whatnot but it s not as easy as it would have been with kit presets eh

So instead of: Stripping everything from your ship. (one command) Opening a tin. (one command) Selecting everything. (one command) Fit all to ship. (one command) Move the modules now in the cargo to the empty tin. (one command)
You just want to do it in one button? (Ok so the above only really works in a station)
Besides if you can afford a ship for every configuration - why don't you just buy one for each?

Because with prefix you can just do it with one click? --------

Prefix setups become the new "bookmarks"
Everyone gets loads of "Bookmark" ship setups ranging over all the ship types with a huge variety of mods, yet only use a few favorites.
Years later everyone blames "bookmarks" for all the lag and they introduce, ahh, Refit-at-zero?

Another thing you could ask for is that when you accept mission "y" it also refits your ship to setup "x".

Edited by: Raketenkaese on 14/03/2007 06:23:42 Aye, I have to admitt that I severely overlooked the 'bookmark effect' and character corruption through game features promoting lazyness.
I strongly suspect the reason we dont have kit presets yet can be found in this thread.

You really think CCP would do somethink to improve their abysmally terrible UI? They still haven't changed the font that makes distinguishing between 0, O; G, 6, & and so on impossible.

The "bookmark" effect as you call it could easily be negated by having presets stored on the client with no preset data being stored on the server (in the same way BM folders are stored client side).
The main difference between this and BMs that would make client side viable is that there's nothing you can do to these presets to give yourself an advantage unlike BMs (e.g. just becuase you tell a preset that you have a certain rare mod fitted doesn't mean one is suddenly spawned, it just means your preset can't fit that mod to your ship unless you already have one in your hanger, otherwise tough luck).
I wouldn't mind seeing somthing like this myself as it can make adjusting ship configurations for other situations a much easier experience. Not essential, but not a bad thing to have ingame either.

They could, like, be stored on your local computer instead of the server?

Regardless of how it's stored, I doubt very highly people will have as many presets as they do bookmarks. Nowhere near that volume of data. Plus it wouldn't have to be loaded anywhere except at the refitting screen, for each particular ship you load (if presets exist for it). So I doubt you'd see it lagging out the nodes.
Impose some arbitrary limit such as 15 presets per ship type if it's such a concern.

I love fitting my ship.
I have a pair of NES Powerglvoes that i wear while I fit. I have an adaptor that allows me to open cans, scroll, click etc.
I lay on my back on the floor and just command the game with my arms. When I fight I use the duckgun to fire my weapons.
I tried plugging myself directly into the computer one time but I was electrocuted and went into convulsions.

No, not at all.
The reason bookmarks were a problem is because they had to be server-side to prevent abuse.
There's no reason to require ship-fit bookmarks to be server side because the server will test if a fitting attempt is valid on a case-by-case basis as it does now. There's no room for abuse so it can be left on the user's computer.
Even if calling them up created lag there's ways to combat it - limit the number that can be called at a time, or introduce a price for calling it up (a kind of efficiency charge).
