It is getting kinda tedious that you need to spend one full cycle to find out that the asteroid you're mining only has 50 m3 left of ore. This is much more noticable in a mining barge, where you spend 3 minutes or so to get through one cycle.
Will it be that much more taxing for the server to look at your mining rate, the asteroid's remaining quantity and doing:
IF <amount remaining>/<rate> >= <full cycle> { cycle = full cycle } ELSE { cycle = <amount remaining>/<rate> }

Yes, the request in the OP should really be "Can we make it easier to work out which 'roid the survey scanner is referring to?" A survey scanner that could optionally just scan targetted roids would be lovely.

Can't you right-click and target the roid from the scan window? I've not used one in a while.

Edited by: Zephyrys on 14/03/2007 19:38:59 Step 1. get close to rocks Step 2. Press survay scanner Step 3. Sort by quantity Step 4. mouse over roid with quantity of choice Step 5. Watch camera look at that roid Step 6. Decide if its worth targeting or not Step 7. Target roid Step 8. Begin mining till rock pops Step 9. Return to Step 4
If this is in the new Regions.. you need to add Step .5 in there and lament the fact that after 4 months the 0.0 roids are still broken and wont give more then 2-3 cycles worth of ore before they pop

Just right-click the roid you want to mine in your scanner and choose 'lock target'. Mine from there.
I recently discovered this and it makes life much easier.

I've always thought they should add a skill called "mining laser efficiency" which allows your mining laser to stop its current cycle closer to the point of asteroid depletion.
Why is this a good idea?
It makes the life of miners a little easier. It provides another skill for miners to train, since there really aren't that many It's not game breaking in ANY way since it would have no impact on any other parts of the game It has only a marginal REAL impact on the total minerals mined, but gets rid of a common miner annoyance
So - why not!

What I used to do was watch my cap. As soon as it reaches 93-94% stop the cycle. If the 'roid pops then you've not wasted the rest of the cycle. If it doesn't pop, you've got enough cap to fire up the strip miners again.

Fitting a survey scanner is great, but if you're in a retriever then you are going to use your 1 mid slot for a survey scanner. Lame. I think that mining smaller rocks with a strip miner is actually detrimental. I did a little test once and found that in my retriever the loss due to cycle time problems was substantial. My isk/hour for mining hemo was approx the same as isk/hour for kernite. No really. The hemo cuts into your bottom line because of lost cycle time and moving around to find new roids to mine. Kernite: none of the above. 2 rocks is enough to fill a jetcan. Almost 0 lost time due to ineffiency.
My solution: mining barges have a built in survey scanner. I mean explain to me how a scanner takes as much space as a cap recharger? Or they get 2 mid slots.

roid scanners from what i remember only say roid and amount, how about adding the distance on as well to roid. hell if i am warping into belt, click on a roid and travel 30-40km to get there just to find out that this one has 20 units in it where the one i was closer has the 50,000 units

wait... you mean I can't just afk mine for 3 mins every cycle, have my sound up, and make isk while doing something else?!?!
Actually, this is very frustrating for me as well, but I feel that this represents to me the time it would take to figure out that I'm not getting any more ore extracted.... laser retargets different parts of the roid and finally says "Yep there's nothing left anywhere in this thing that's usable".
Just like in tabletop games, if you have a problem with something, try to make up a story to justify it. Works wonders. (or roll a D6)

I'll ignore that table top game reference in the same paragraph as EVE, and give this guy a bump.

What else were you going to put there? Not enough grid to fit a proper-size AB or MWD on a barge, and no 1 shield module you fit there will change the fact that a barge is paper-thin.

My suggestions on fixing the survey scanner,
1 put a distance cloumn on the scanner 2 put a lock onto tartget or / unlock or tag options on the results. 3 updates locked rocks that get scanned get an hp bar based on the amount you scanned it at being 100% your mining will slowly decrease this hp bar giving you an idea when its time to swap rocks or do a rescan. *==================* Fight the bunnies! ...|\_/|.......(\_|) |\<^-^>=@(x-0) \|.uwu........(....) |
