I hate... and I use that word to its full degree when I say this... I HATE grinding standings.
If we've got crappy standings with a faction, why can't we bribe people to increase our standings. I think they did this in Freelancer.
Add in a new charisma skill, that decreases the chance of failure. Make it that if your bribe fails, you take a good hit in standings and perhaps even sec status. If you are positive standings and you fail, you instantly drop to 0 with that corp/faction/whatever. Oh and don't make it cheap either. 20mil per 0.5 standing increase or something.
I'm just starting up a science alt now for invetion and I need to get it R&D agents, but it's gonna take me 73985275498732 years to get decient lvl 4 agents and I find when I need to grind standings, I find lots of excuses to just not bother logging on.

There definitely needs to be alternative ways of gaining faction standings.
I am a production character. I have never run a mission for any faction and never want to, standings affect lots of little things like refine rates and market tax. I have probably spent millions of ISK on factory/lab rental, invested billions into the local economy, and probably given hundreds of millions in refining tax yet none of this matters when it comes to standings and I have to waste my time running courier missions if I want it to change - I am busy enough as it is!

I completely disagree with this. Everyone has choices to make on which direction they take their characters.
Some choose pure PVP
Some choose pure missions
Some choose pure science
And some choose to mix and match
You made your choices on your characters - work for standing like everyone else has to!

The reason is pretty simple. You should not be able to buy yourself out of trouble! A Pirate for example, would then spend some time in low sec podding at will, just to spend a few trinkets, and he would be able to fly in empire again! This just one out of many examples.
This is a game of consequenses. Face it. If you brought your factional status that low you got trouble out of it, you got none to blame but your own.

err... Standings != security status. Pirating effects sec status and has jack to do with faction standings.

One can raise their faction standing from 0 to 8 very quickly with a bit off effort. I am still undecided about being able to bribe factions, if then it should at a very high price imo.
Help me help you. |

I made it to +6 standings with the blood raiders in under a week, so +8 can't be that hard.

do you know that you just disagreed with yourself ? if some chose pure science, how is getting standings even remotely the same thing?

With blood raiders faction of with a single corp? I've been running lvl 4 missions for the caldari navy for a while now. I have 200k LP with my main agent and yet I still only have a meager 3.7something with the caldari faction, which means I can't even use lvl 3 agents with another faction like Ishkone Corp (The one I want to use R&D agents with). This is with Connections IV.
It just sucks that running missions is the ONLY way to increase your standing. Why can't we bribe, it happens in real life. As one of the other posters already said, it you continue to use a stations facilities like refining for a long time, start giving standing increases, you're making money for the faction, why can't you be rewarded with a little discount for being a valued costumer. Why don't I get standing increase with a main faction when I purge rats in thier low sec areas where the Navy is unable to patrol. I'm doing them a huge service. Why don't I get standing increase for hunting down outlaws in low sec in main faction low sec areas.
There's a load of other ways that standings could be gained, ways that make sense and that could easily work, but all we've ben given is boring old mission running from lvl 1(2) -> lvl 4 and it's drill-into-the-head boring.
