Now.. I know I don't know the inns and outs of the CCP's systems and how everything works, but the thing that REALLY bugs me about EVE is the downtime .. it's right in the middle of prime-time playing for me (and I'm sure a lot of other Australians).
I was wondering if there is any intention from CCP at all to modify this, not asking to change the time slot, more so to make it every second day? This would make this game absolutely perfect for me to play!
I'm a long time WOW player and just sick of the crap from WoW (IE: immaturity) and I like eve.. I have a few days left to go on my Trial.. I did play a few years ago when EVE was first released and thought the downtime kinda sucked then too.. but just ignored it as I had more time available.
If CCP can find it in their heart to review this, and look at adjusting the frequency of downtime.. that would be GREAT!!!!!
Please .. make it at least every 2nd day! =)

Downtime is for certain reson, backups, fixes, reset etc. If it wasn't nessesary to do it on dail basis, it wouldn't be done :P
Also this dt is more like 30minutes, go out for shopping :P

The downtime bugs me too. As a developer myself, I'm wondering why they haven't designed the system so that the daily cleaning jobs can be done while the server is running. Heck just have it scheduled to starting the background cleaning when the server node load is low.
How much would the net suck if Google had to go down 1 hour every day for daily maintenance? ----- CCP: Please make ship loot to drop in a can next to the wrecks. Edit: On the test server you can now salvage wrecks with loot. After a succesfull salvage the loot is left in a jetcan. |

The down time is needed because it also lets the server cool down, remember it is running for 23hrs. unlike WoW servers EvE it normaly holds lets say six or seven wow servers.
During down time not only does it trigger outposts but it is also the key time when they add in small fixes to a glitch or test something on the main server.
As for down time being during a main hour, 11:00 to 12:00 are lower times, almost as low as time around 04:00. Reek hour is mainly from 18:00 to 23:00 from what I have seen.

The reason downtime is at 11:00-12:00 GMT is that the server mantanance team are in London so its the middle of the day for them. I give them a chance to check what happened over night, that patches etc need to be done and time once its completed to make sure there are no problems.
All, the markets, outposts, aroid spawns are done at this time as well. CCP have stated that part of the reason its every day is so people do not have to remember that days its on and they get used to it so can easiliy plan for it.

So - after all of that.
I am still punting for this option.
Granted players in London / Europe etc. play prime time some 12 hours away from it.
But it's kinda hard to play "prime time" on the opposite side of the world when I'm working that time.
Please CCP - do consider this! =)
Can you guys not look at doing "live" patching some days?
As some discussion in-game once, if it's run well, shouldn't "need" a downtime daily for maintenance. Test it even! Run a maintenance on 2 days a week even... some, anything.
Show you're willing to give players on the opposite side of the world a chance to play well in their prime-time.

There will always be someone you inconvinience, unfortunately.
Moving the DT or making it less frequent will just irritate someone else for whom the system works well now. =/

Er...no. Just no, okay? There are servers all over the world that run 24/7. Heck I used to run my mail server 24/7 at home until recently. It is also not one server - it is a cluster of servers.
There is no hardware reason why it can't be left to run 24/7 and in fact a good reason not to let it cool down. Cooling down/warming up places a thermal load on the equipment as it expands/contracts and mechanical parts like hard disk spindles are under the greatest strain when they are just starting up. It is far better for servers running for most of the day to be left running all the day and in fact I imagine CCP's servers do run 24/7.
The downtime is just when players can no longer log in. I expect the Eve 'universe' is basically still running but in a slightly brain-dead way while backups are run and garbage collection performed. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

If rumors are true that eve cluster runs on Windows an MSSQL, i dout it will be ever capable tu run 24/7.

I'm still holding on to my Google analogy. That is also a server cluster. With a huge database. But still they manage to do all this without a daily downtime. ----- CCP: Please make ship loot to drop in a can next to the wrecks. Edit: On the test server you can now salvage wrecks with loot. You don't seem to know or remember that everyso often there is a emergency plud mid game play when something has overheated and need to cool off. If some over heats you have two options, let it continue and rick permanany damage or let it cool down back to safe levels, CCP chose the latter.
As for it being able to run 24/7 like a mail server is kinda silly, name another game that holds any where near eve's numbers on a single server that does not have a normal down time.
Also is 7hrs a week really so much for you? As I said befor, those are not peek hours. So what times will it be better to add in patches or updates which are often in this game?

It's not the downtime they have .. it's the time-slot it's in.
I know 20 odd people that get home, play for 3 hours, get disconnected for up to an hour in majority of cases, and connect for 30min to an hour before logging off to get some sleep.
For those people, that's 3-4 hours of game play a night. If it was broken up into every second day.. that would give them 4-5 hours of game play a night.
Even a example only
Monday - Wednesday - Friday - Saturday - Sunday
Maintenance schedule would be good.
That gives 3 days that those people I know (and the ones they know etc. etc. get to play.
But, if they have to have an emergency shutdown because something is overheating .. then there is a MAJOR issue in that department and obviously they need additional cooling somewhere.
