Personally i am excited at the introduction of the clones. At work i asked some younger guys who also game alot, i was excited and hoped they would finally start playing eve. Their answer was however they flet they where years behind too other players who fly way cooler stuff, a gap they would never close. For them, since they have a job it was not money. Grnated thye might get hooked like i did by the free account, but they where not gonna try. ( i might force them or threatehn to fire them lol)
It seems to me there are 2 major distractions. One being the money, and the other the skilgap. This curent one is the easiest the fill, the least controversial, and gets mostly positive feedback. I am aplauding on the sideline hard. I hope its enough, and not to little to late. I dream of floods and hordes off new players breaking down all current structures and alliegiances.
So what if you woudl take the concept further. Your omega clone straight away unlocks and fills too the minimum required level all racial skills for that toon of one race. This happens when you transfer your clone from alpha too omega. IN theory you could quickly fly a bs, or titan. You woudl lack support skills and higer levels , except the onces Needed, and weapons systems woudl still require time, as so crosstraining. You could consider stopping this at the capital level. Occasional adding titans and supers for marketing purpose, this month only, update your alpha and get titan skill unlocked!
Current players would complain as they invested time, money and injectors to achieve the same. So they get thier sp and books isk back the new guy gets for free in their race, not crosstrained. They csn aply them too other fields of expertiece, and through this also benefiting form this second big change too push eve into another decade and keep it there. I am sure a curretn titan player doesnt mind getting his titan book isk back.
It has a additional spin off that players would see the benefit of mutiple accounts, as you could limit this feature too one toon per account. Or you open a second toon with the feature with a plex on same account, like training now on second toon.
It would close the gap that would keep people away from quitting the alpha state, cause they would be years form flying with the big boys on thier opinion. The current player gets rewarded for his investments by alot of free sp, making it possible for him to unlock alot of ships, weapons and so on.
Align both up, first alpha, then racial unlocked and filled omega's and i think the chance i can play in 10 years woudl incrrade, and the guys at my work woudl fly with me. Current players coudl easier get their frends in, at the same level, not as meat shield.
Its a rought idea outline, a opinion of a further push, and with the return for current players it might be a midway to not **** people off and yet give new players a real chance, not a half ass one

The second gap is filled by research. That includes getting help from other players. SP-wise you can become a decently competent pilot in a rather short time. Granted, your options would be limited, but at that point branching out would have become much easier.

The younger guys at work are likely well behind older peers in knowledge, skill and experience. Doesn't mean they should quit their job and go on welfare.
Part of the appeal, for me at least, is that there will still be new things to learn and new goals to set when I have been playing the game twice as long as I have now. |

Hell why stop there? Why not just give everyone all the things? No one has to try to get anything, because it's all already there. We may as well just play on Thunderdome where we can just spawn what we want when we want it.
The skill gap is the biggest lie anyone ever told, and CCP did no one any favors when they introduced skill extractors.

Think they are apprehensive now? Wait til they find out they'll be 24/7 camped by alts that don't fight, but only sit there waiting for a blobbertunity. Meaning they have no options but to sit in station or cloak (which free accounts cannot do).
Even with defense they'll still die doing anything if the alts know they can risk free kill them in some orthurus and cynabal.

The argument is noted, but irrelevant. Does he also ask for double-moves in chess? The skillqueue and skillbook system serves as time-waster and patience-trainer "Use and do what you can until you can use or do something else."
Your friend's issue is time invested, which is an actually important part of the game. Or, in other words, he's driven by lower instincts and just wants it all, best at day one. (Oh nono, ofc not, just a few things and not THAT many)

You know, the vast majority of people who will come to try.

At this point am i convinced that you're a fluidgender. No offense.

And here i see that you never actually spent any time on thinking longer about this and what else this would cause. We're talking about collectively hundreds of billions of sp here, which you want everyone to use as they see fit.
How did you become CSM? You want to turn EVE ONLINE into an arcade game for instant gratification types ... ... who couldn't have a conscious thought even if his life depended on it!

" It's not even out and you already make assumptions about people quitting. The gap you're imagining does not exist. You can google that and make yourself smarter.
I'm not even mad. It's amazing that you got on the CSM ... ... or scary. Really scary...

I have heard from different people of that skill gap mythos. Those people are interested in eve but never played it. And because of the IDEA that you cannot fill the gap, they do not try eve online.
An idea is a very mighty thing and it is really frustrating to tell people again and again that a lot of skill points means nothing and that only those few skill points for the current situation matter.
For me it seems that this fact is not really visible for people and so they do not start trying the game.
Unfortunately I have no clue what can be done to improve this. :( |

CCP lives by the mantra of "Maximum Profit No Matter The Cost", as do all the other corps out there. The problem is that in pursuing those last few pennies the central thrust and focus of the game is altered to the point that it is no longer the game we pay to play. Making it easier and flashier for the kids will eliminate the long term planning, ship acquisitions and training that go into game play, and further, the flashy video trailers with massive ship fights is simply not the game that I and many others play.
I can accept the fact that CCP wants to move in a different direction, it is, after all, their little red wagon. But there will be many of us that cannot follow where CCP leads and must needs to find another serious pain in the ass time-sink sandbox to play in.

The gap in SP between new players and vets and the assumption that you cannot compete with vets is a misconception. In eve only X amount of SP applies to any given thing your doing at one time.
For example i have new alt that has about 5 mil SP now but has flown a gila since 3.5 mil SP. He is as proficient with that ship as my older alts with 10s of million SP in most cases more proficient. If you take my main and start stripping away SP he has that he doesnt use flying a gila... you have Heavy drones, logi drones, capital ship SP as well as all the trains for the various things for capitals such as jump skills, fighters, etc. Then you take away all of his indy skills, his gunnery skills, his amarr and minmatar skills, His social skills, scanning skills, trading skills, his T2 and t3 ship skills, most of his rig skills, his cruise and torp skills, his neural skills, most of his armor skills, any mining skills, etc. etc. You just removed over 100 mil SP from him that is in no way relevant to flying a Gila.
So now the difference between my main and my low sp alt in SP might be a few months if that mostly in secondary skills like navigation, all drone skill to 5 instead of only about half and the rest at 4, Racial cruisers to 4 instead of 5 on my main, and a few other minor skills. So the advantage of being vet is actually quite small and can be offset but actual player skills. |

As a relatively new player I agree that the gap isn't so bad, I mean I can't fly any T2 ships yet but that's because I mostly played solo and didn't focus on any one ship specifically up until recently; even when i joined corps i wasn't really active in the start because Eve is full of angry sociopath types and there were alot of personality clashes as I there's a high possibility i could be one of them; despite that I can fly 98 ships of various types at the moment and in fleets I've rarely seen people fly anything bigger than a battleship as the majority will fly T1 cruisers, battlecruisers and battleships because they're easy to replace ofcourse there are the T2 variants for specific roles within the fleet but majority are in the cheaper option as even if you're space rich you don't wanna have to spend more than you need to. Occasionally I've seen a dreadnaught tag along but if you're looking for a fight i've noticed in my short time in nullsec that people tend to run away from those types of fleets unless they have a dreadnaught of their own to put on the table lol.. I'm not claiming to know much about anything, i'm just speaking from personal experiences so far. The Gap in skillpoints is intimidating for the new player but once you wrap your head around Eve and learn to play better it's not that scary. Actual player skills are scarier than SP now that the rich kids can buy their skills it just means there's more shiny sh!t in space to shoot at.. these injectors made it easier to pop shiny things :) imo.. I don't have the skills in pvp to actually pop these shiny things yet, usually its them popping me but a fight's a fight one day I'll win one haha.. its all funtimes to me. |
