I would like to see Eve Online surpass WoW. Eve Online is in constant evolution, whereas WoW just has expansion(s).
Some people view Eve Online as a 'fringe game'. I don't agree with this - for example, Star Wars is one of the most popular films of all time.
Should CCP focus it's resources on Eve Online rather than branch-out into World of Darkness? Is it right for the profits of Eve Online to be used to start up a new game? - Should the money be used to further improve Eve instead?
I'm all for making Eve Online the most popular MMORPG. Is this achievable?

First of all, using profits from one thing to make another is natural...you can't make something without money, so unless you happen to have spare money lying around every time you want to make something new...
Secondly, I agree that Eve is an absolutely fantastic game. As such, I would like to see how WoD turns out.
Third, WoW is currently played by 0.1% of the entire world's population. Does that mean it's better? Nope, it means it's easier to have fun whether you're 12 or 30. And get addicted to.
Eve already surpasses WoW on MMORPG.com, last time I checked. In fact it was #1 for a while.
Thus I believe that Eve has already beaten WoW in all aspects but population, and honestly - I don't want 0.1% of the world on one server unless that server is REALLY powerful. It's laggy enough as it is.

Hence, It would suck, Besides, Even if not millions, eve is covered in the growing population. Just buy biggers servers, thicker cables, and add a few regions ;)

Edited by: Patch86 on 17/03/2007 22:02:46 WoW is only so "big" because its essentially a franchise- 100's of servers, each with their own GMs, rules, balancing, and so forth. There are PvP-centric servers, RP servers, mission running servers, whatever. Theres something for everyone. Further, as a much simpler, more bog standard game, its much easier for Jo Low-IQ to get in to, while with lower risk means its more relaxing for your average gamer type. On top of that, it has a big brand name label to play with.
EVE, on the other hand, is a single persistent universe, with a single rule set, and unforgiving death penalty, and deep, complex and freeform gameplay. More popular? No. Better? Every time.
And anyhow, with the single server ethos, Tranquility is already running at pretty much capacity. I dread to think what would happen with a 100,000 more players, let alone millions more. It just couldn't happen.

WOW and EVE are not even in the same class. WOW & EQ2 compete but I can't think of anything that even comes close to Eve.
And I am biased but I also don't want a universe run by a bunch of 10 year olds who just want to run around and go PEW PEW PEW all day.

In order for it to surpass WoW, it'd have to become WoW.
It's not about coverage, money or expansions. It's about core gameplay. EVE is nothing like WoW - it's hardcore, and most people just don't want that in a game. They want something they can relax to after a hard day at work or whatever. EVE caters to those who don't (or didn't anyway, after Suxodus and all that lvl4 mission crap it's hard to tell), who like a little player-centric challenge in their MMOs.
EVE doesn't have as many subscribers as WoW because it doesn't appeal to as many people. Cry that WoW sucks all you like, that's the simple truth.
Originally by: Jack Target Some people view Eve Online as a 'fringe game'. I don't agree with this - for example, Star Wars is one of the most popular films of all time.
Um... what? What does Star Wars have to do with anything?
People say it's a fringe game because of its gameplay, not because it's set in space. There's nothing inherent about fantasy settings that attract more players - just Everquest and UO were two of the first and biggest MMOs and publishers don't like to take risks so they make clones of those two games.
Originally by: Jack Target Should CCP focus it's resources on Eve Online rather than branch-out into World of Darkness? Is it right for the profits of Eve Online to be used to start up a new game? - Should the money be used to further improve Eve instead?
How do you think any company produces a new product? Seriously that's stupid. CCP were always going to make another game, it was just a matter of time.
That said I get the feeling WoD is just going to be another sucky grindfest MMO clone. Why bother making a new MMO if it's just going to be the exact same game as EVE? CCP wants in on the juicy grindfest MMO market IMO. That can't be good for any of us (other than CCP's wallet of course) in the long run.
Originally by: Jack Target I'm all for making Eve Online the most popular MMORPG. Is this achievable?
No. CCP could do that, sure, but it wouldn't be EVE anymore. ___

If the Developers don't fudge up anymore I would say I could see Eve being around ten years from now. I don't think I would say the same for WoW. People would be too busy playing World of Starcraft to care about that old game.

BACK ON TOPIC, EVE and WoW are different beasts. Why anyone is even comparing the Elite-esqueness of EVE with the tiny-bit-Tolkien-inspired swords and sorcery of WoW, I will never know.

Surpass how exactly? Since Eve is aiming towards a different groupo of people doing a completely different thing, how can it 'surpass' it directly.
Originally by: Jack Target Some people view Eve Online as a 'fringe game'. I don't agree with this - for example, Star Wars is one of the most popular films of all time.
Eve is a fringe game. Another term for this is intelligent game.
Originally by: Jack Target I'm all for making Eve Online the most popular MMORPG. Is this achievable?
No. It can't support that many people, and there aren't that many people smart enough to play it. -
If you go into your options menu, there's a difficulty slider. Put that all the way over to the easiest setting and you'll be fine. |

From a business standpoint, it makes more sense to make another game. I played City of Heroes (NCSoft), and they're also making Exteel, Tabula Rusa and the new Marvel MMO, I believe. While all four of those games (particularly Marvel & CoH) will have some cross-over players, the majority of their player bases likely don't.
Example: I like sci-fi, which is why I like EVE. I don't like Warcraft, but I do like Starcraft. No matter how much money Blizzard puts into WoW, I won't play it, so they won't get any money from me. But if they made a Starcraft game, they might.
The vast majority of the time, you'll get more players (and more money) by making a brand new game rather than putting that money back into the game you've already made.

As obvious, since CCP are here to make money, if they find they'll make a good profit by using our subscription cash to develop WoD, they will. If that sounds unfair to you, then you didn't realize the subscription you pay is to give your account access to the server, not to add more content to the game, that's something they do on their own initiative, if they deem it worth the investment.
Besides, let's imagine a future scenario where WoD is a huge hit and CCP keeps developing both EVE and WoD. The massive profit generated by WoD's success would probably be used not only to improve WoD but EVE as well.

It would be possible to have millions of people online in the eve universe if the server size scales linearly with the number of players.
At the same time, if say a million people were online at peak times, we would need 30 or so times more systems.
That could be quite interesting, because there would be plenty of room for several large 0.0 empires without the need to fight each other.

Edited by: Hotice on 18/03/2007 05:29:03 I doubt it. With the amount of scammers and asshats in Eve, it will always be a game for the very small percentage of people. The whole game atmosphere in Eve is just not very new player friendly. For those who love FPS style pvp, Eve is too slow. For those who love RPG style pve, Eve got too little pve content. It takes a special kind of person to actually like Eve.
I used to asking people that I know to give Eve a try. But now I tell them to stay away. I recommand WoW to people a lot more since I know they will most likely to have good time in that game. Eve is like a time bomb, you never know when it is going to explod and ruin your day. hehe

Eve can't and shouldn't beat WoW. WoW is as popular as it is because of it's dumbed down simplistic gameplay and cartoony graphics that allow it to be apealing to the mainstream. The mainstream are retards and children (and sometimes retarded children). The mainstream also likes it when you let them win because it makes them feel like a better player than they are. That is why there is no risk in WoW. In short, WoW is MMORPGs on training wheels. In order for eve to get more popular than WoW you would either have to make it so simple a smarter than average monkey could play it and remove all risk, or somehow make the entire population of the earth smarter and more skilled MMO veterans. Because that isn't possible the only way to do it would be to destroy everything that makes eve apealing to it's current playerbase. It might also help to add in big night elf bewbs and the ability to dance naked on the ironforge auction house countertops (substitute gallente for night elves and jita market for ironforge auctionhouse). Oh yeah, they're doing that one. I almost forgot.

Ugh, don't get so high and mighty over WoW. If either of us - EVE or WoW players - have it wrong in some way I'd say it's us over them. We take our games waaaay too seriously.
There are plenty of smacktards in EVE. EVE is not chess, and it's not for brain surgeons only. It's just slower and has a death penalty. I honestly don't see a greater deal of depth. A little, but EVE is still by the numbers for the most part. The only real difference is that WoW takes 4 minute to go from point A to B while EVE takes 4 months. That gives it the illusion of depth.
I see WoW players as players who see games for what they are - a little fun diversion that they can entertain themselves with for an hour or two. EVE seems to be either for the emotional cripple, somebody who can only get an ego boost by lording it over somebody else (which is not healthy, no matter what you say) or people who just take their games too seriously, and are willing to waste hours at a time just for the sake of making their games - which are by definition not real - more realistic. ___

Depends on how you play Eve. If you are the leader of a alliance in 0.0, Eve can become like a second life. You measure your skills against live opponents (other alliance leaders) and your successes and failures have severe consequences for everyone involved in the conflict.
What do you have in WoW that compared to that? So of course Eve has depth... if you let it, and have the time for it.

A single sharded world given current technology could not support a population of the size WoW has.

when you say "beat" WoW, what exactly do you mean?.
If you mean playerbase size, then its not that big a deal, more players doesnt mean better game, just means theres more sheep.
I also play a game called Knight Online, its always full, has tons of people in it, i can rarely get in, but because its got a loada players, doesnt mean its "better" than say NWN/NWN2 or the multitude of others out there.
If you mean a "better" game as in experience/content/originality etc, then it also doesnt matter as eve already is better then WoW in that respect.
