Well maybe not Amarrian, but fly their ships at least.
Currently skilled for NH and Caldari in general, but the shiny golden hulls and flashy lazurs are very tempting.
If I was to skip Missiles and shields for some of this gunnery stuff, where would I be best to start.
I like the look of the Omen/Zealot hull, the Harbinger looks like it could be a seriously fun ship, although a Curse would fit my skills best.
I have done the lvl4 stuff I have made my money, I just want some fun PvE, I think this might be it.
So ship/setup Ideas for a crazy sp layout like mine, also general advice and abilities of said ships would be appreciated.
IMPORTAINT NOTE.
I know Amarr are not the uber race, I have never followed the uber, I cannot fly any BS and have never had any urge to do so, making money and efficiancy in doing so are not objectives of this venture, fun and doing something different are.

While I won't get into all the Gunnery skills, basically, to shine you'll need those skills up preferrably to 4 (obviously), but what's also important (almost MORE important) is to get the cap skills up (since lasers suck a lot of cap) and the skills which lower PG and CPU requirements.
As for ships, I recommend the Harbinger. I fit it with heavy pulse lasers, heat sinks, and cap rechargers, along with armor hardeners, of course - does great for missions. If you want PvP, the Pilgrim/Curse are super, and the Zealot can be fun, although many these days would recommend a tier 2 BC over a HAC.
There's my 2 ISK. And welcome to the laser-and-armor-goodness that is Amarr.

Omen is a mediocre ship at best. If you have some battlecruiser skill already for ferox/drake, harbinger is probably your best bet. That being said, a retribution can be nice for 0.0 ratting as well, if that takes your fancy.

If you can fly the curse then that would be the way to go. Best amarr ship under BS size. Harbinger is awesome for it's cost. It does very, very nice damage. For virtually any amarr ship but curse/pilgrim you're going to need lots of gunnery and mechanic/armor tanking skills. Amarr ships need less ew trickery and more straight forward gun and tanking skills. Some drone and missiles skills but that's it. Very straight forward. If you can fly the NH the absolution is a beast. Awesome tank and great damage. I've helped kill a few Nighthawks in my Abso. Much fun. GL!!

If you're already Caldari specced and just want some PvE fun, grab a Phantasm (for L3s) or a Nightmare (for L4s). They're both split-weapon ships which will take advantage of your missile skills while letting you play with lasers.
Here are two of my fits if you're interested:

Hm.. PvE fun.
Retribution is a very nice ship, insane damage, awesome tank. It isn't the best for pvp due to its slot layout, but certainly a fun ship for ratting and stuff; easy to train for. (i must add - it pops stupid crows even without a scrambler)
Zealot - certainly a lot of fun, it's fast, agile and it has an optimal range bonus. With a heavy beam setup, this is one of the best ships for the kind of missions where you face a lot of frigs/cruisers. It just machineguns them as someone described it in a pvp thread.
Absolution - heavier brother of the Zealot. Serious damage, though it's slower and it doesn't have the optimal bonus. The added damage and tank makes it the ship of choice for lvl4 missions for a lot of people.
Harbinger - also very nice.
Apoc - i do missions with a pimped Apoc and i love it.
Arbitrator, Curse, Pilgrim etc - you asked about PvE and those aren't really PvE ships (though i've heard about some crazy curse setups).
You're going to need slightly different skills than for your nighthawk: - repair systems - mechanic - energy mgmt & energy systems operation - armor compensation skills - gunnery skills (controlled bursts, and the others as well)
My personal favourite is the Retribution, it's a beast, though kinda pointless (not efficient for 0.0 rats, pointless in higher level missions, almost pointless in pvp) but it has everything an Amarr ship has to have.

Alright, stop all this, its far too silly, and now time for something completly umm, the same as the first post.
Well a few nice ideas here, I like the idea of factioning it all up, and another plus the Phantasm/Nightmare do look damn fine.
As for my first venture into the lazeur world, it seems the Maller is the ship most oftern reccomended for new players in lvl2s. Now I know you have said the Omen is less than good, but where exactly does it fall down against the Maller for messin about in the odd mission or 2? I have fairly decent cap skills (lvl4s all round), the gunnery and mechanic skills will take some training.
Also armour tanking for dummies, 2x med armour rep2? or 1med 1 sml? energised, resistance plating or hardeners? What is the purpose of a plate? I get shield extenders as that has passive recharge, but for armour why is a large value better when you are solely dependent on the rep?
Amarr mid slots, are AB and cap rechargers the only things worth putting here?
Woo, lots of questions, hopefully you all have some answers.

A cruiser is cannonfodder for any self respecting HAC, the HAC is fodder for BC, the BC for CS, the CS for BS and so on and so on...

It was a long time ago when i did lvl2s but i believe both the Omen and the Maller should be fine with reasonable skills..
Omen has a rate of fire bonus but it has less power grid and less turret hardpoints. You'll find yourself running out of fitting room when trying to use larger guns with a reasonable tank. (well, that's true for all amarr ships!)
Maller has solid cap, solid PG and a tanking bonus so it's a good all-rounder. BUT for lower level missions an Omen may be better with a paper tank (small rep) and heat sinks (respectable damage that way). I don't know.
Plates are mainly used in PvP where you have to withstand far more damage than your repairers can recover. In PvE you need a sustainable tank - sometimes a plate to give the reps a buffer (they have a longer cycle than shield boosters).
In PVP energised resistance plating is preferred (usually) for saving slots and CPU so you're able to fit some other useful modules. In PVE you would fit cap relays in the remaining slots anyway, they need less cpu so they (usually) fit even with active hardeners. You'll run into problems when fitting a full rack of tech2 guns with active hardeners and heat sinks and reps.
The maller has a resistance bonus so it seems reasonable to go for maximum resists with a sustainable tank. I don't think a dual rep setup is sustainable with reasonable resistances and cruiser sized guns.
As for mid slots, a tracking computer can be handy (my mission running apoc either runs 2 reps, full tank, AB, cap rechargers, or 1 rep, tracking computer, light tank, damage mods). Some people use a webber. Or a sensor booster. (trust me in a zealot you kill frigs faster than you can lock them)

I do most of my L4s in a Zealot with ease (1 t2 med repper and pulse laser setup - i dispose of friggies faster than i can lock them), l3s are doable in Retribution quite nicely too.
As for the laz0r thingies, then you should really look into the t2 stuff - it's where the things get nasty :)
Retribution - small, but incredibly tough for its size ship. The incarnation of amarrian warfare philosophy. And yes, it can pop stupid (and sometimes even not-so-stupid) interceptors even without scramblers. Perfect for PvE, and sometimes in small PvP gangs.
Vengeance - as someone stated above, the retri's little brother. Sadly, mostly underestimated. It can perform very well as a heavy tackler in small gangs while still offering quite nice damage output, also may be the choice for solo pvp. Not as tough as retri, and also not so damage-capable. but quite versatile ship nonetheless.
Punisher - well, this guy is the tech1 prototype for both vengie and retri. Probably the best (some may argue) frigate in game. With good skills can have really nasty tank. Autocannon-setups are not uncommon for this ship. A low-end choice for PvP and PvE.
Zealot - the heavy-hitter of the amarrian HAC family. Sporting all possible bonuses for energy turrets, this slugger is also fast and agile, so it comes fast, and it kills fast. Tanking abilities of this ship is also quite impressive. Due to seven lowslots and tech2 ship base resists it can be tanked well and still not lose its damage-dealing potential. Perfect for both PvP and PvE combat.
Omen - Zealot's tech1 counterpart. Sporting bonuses for energy turret's RoF this cruiser is a viable option for both PvP and PvE.
Sacrilege - intended to be the heavy tanker of amarrian HAC family it sadly got superseded by it's class counterpart, the Zealot. Nevertheless, Sacrilege can do it's jub really well, furthermore, it is cheaper than Zealot. Good for folo and gang PvP combat, though lacks damage for PvE.
Maller - IMHO this one is even better then it's t2 version. With good skills it can have decent tank, decent firepower (especially when fitted with autocannons) and may be used in both PvP as a heavy tackler and PvE for mission-running. Probably the sigle t1 cruiser that can tackle most l3 missions solo head-on. The best choice for it's cost.
Prophecy - Given it's resistances and large capacitor can sport quite impressive tanks. Autocannon or artillery setups are not uncommon for this ship.
Absolution - Prophecy squared. Heavy tank and heavy damage. Just plainly awesome ship.
Harbinger - THE ship. Impressive damage and good tank, coupled with large dronebay makes this battlecruiser really nasty foe to tackle.
You may have noticed i've omitted the Arby/Curse/Pilgrim family. This was not a mistake, just these ships need to have a separate talk about. They all are primarily an drone carriers and EW (electronic warfare) platforms. Not even mentioning they all look just awesome.
Arbitrator - tech1 counterpart of the curse and pilgrim. Having bonuses for EW and drones, might be really dangerous in good pilot's hands. A "lazy man's" choice for l2 missions where you face frigates and a few cruisers, since it's drones can dispose of the NPCs even while you're eating your breakfast
Pilgrim - a force recon ship, that has a rightfully earned hasty reputation. A drone platform with NOS and EW bonuses - what could be worse? You won't forget your first meeting with this ship. Capability to fit covert-Ops cloaking device offers this ship to dictate its own rules of engagement while avoiding unfavourable combat situations.
Curse - take pilgrim's cloaking ability and slap on more NOS bonuses - this all-out combat vessel is real beast, fully justifying its name.
Both curse and pilgrim can tackle most l3 and even some l4 missions. Though curse uses shield tank for pve preferably (which is really rare for amarrian ships).
None of the three uses laz0rz in standard setups however.

As for PvE fittings - one medium tech2 repairer should be fine for most level 2 and level 3 missions, LAR2 for most l4s.
For l2 missions i would choose the arby for its drones :) For level 3 i'd recommend either zealot or harbinger. Prophecy can do it too, but it kinda lacks the damage of the above two. As with battleships - i'd prefer abaddon for level4 missions, with one repairer and armor repair rig. Apoc with two repairers and suitable rigs can tank almost every (if not every) level 4 mission forever. Zealot can do most of l4s on one repairer also.
And, uh - shiny golden hulls and flashy laz0rz? Curse and pilgrim has neither of that honestly
