Hi,
As there was this sad story about a fellow capsuleer named Olivia and there where many ideas brought up for her, hopefully soon, return. I felt it is a good idea to consulidate everything in this post.
In my opinion the best Idea was to collect some money to create her a Fortizar Citadel with all required Service modules and defensemods. I think the best is here to let her friend @Quincy Jeter collect and place the citadel in a system of her choice. And then welcome her with a NPSI Fleet of drakes from said citadel FCed by @Jonnyb Cunningham.
As initial Name I suggest "Olivia's Space Pub" as a it has her name and a Pub is normally a cozy Place to hang out with friends.
This truly cannot neglet the damage done, but maybe it reminds her everytime she logs into the game that she is not alone, which hopefully gives her strength all the time. :)
I think it is a affordable effort we can do for her.
Share your thoughts.
Bj+¦rn
P.S. full story is written here in this awesome blog https://theneocom.com/2016/10/04/her-name-is-olivia/ *** UPDATE1 *** I reached out to the leadership of TEST Alliance Please Ignore with the request if it is possible to guard the onlining Citadel during the vulnerability window.
Sapporo Jones said himself: "If we aren't tied down with strategic operations in Tribute or Vale at the time then absolutely we should be there." ***
*** UPDATE2 *** Due to the sheer support it is considered upgrading the planned Fortizar into a Keepstar. It would be huge if we manage to pull this upgrade off. :)
It just depends on what we have in the end.
Just for coordination reasons do not donate any ISK yet. I keep you updated and announce the character where the ISK will be collected in a upcoming update.
It will be a character of either herself or of a close friend of hers. (Quincy) *** |

Read about this story yesterday and was sad to see that some in our community forget what human decency is. The outrage and condemnation of events I have seen following the breaking of the news once again just shows how fantastic this community is however.
This is a great idea and I hope it gets a good following from alliances working together. My only concern is that it could cause more undue stresses to those involved in future should the Citadel become targeted for future trolling however.

Terrible to hear, hope she is well. Strange story though, curious to see what happened and how. If it happend in B4R, perhaps a channel/community like that should be either closed (or policed 24/7) and let the suicidal people go the real professionals, not encourage them to seek advice from space shrinks? The intention is noble, i understand. But you see what can happen and probably will happen again in the future. Some people just need a little push and it's very easy to receive here in New Eden( or any other mmo/forum for that matter )
If you seek guidance and wisdom in chatchannels on the web, there's a gigantic chance you'll get dissapointed when you're experiencing mental issues. These trolls were the straw that broke the camel's back. It's a sad thing and people who repeatedly harass other only to flame/troll them should be punished.
Be blessed, have a great day and never forget...

Very sad to see people acting like scumbags like that - trolling a B4R seriously crosses the line. But it's equally as heartening to see our community pulling together when it counts.
We might be trolls, saboteurs, backstabbers and awoxers ingame, but this community is the best in the world, both because of all of this malarkey, and because of how we really (underneath all the shenanigans) look out for our Eve brethren.
Wishing Olivia a speedy recovery and that she and her loved ones get all the support they need during and after this challenging time. |

I understand somewhat your point of view. But without being too much of a cliche, getting professional help with an emotional crisis/mental illness break is not as easy as it appears in print. 'They meant well' conversations with space ship shrinks can help, if only to get someone to daylight hours intact and to start the process of acquiring that professional help.
I hope Olivia recovers rapidly and gets more help from here onward, some lesson is learned about where's not the proper place for trolling for lulz, and I'll continue to support B4R and it's efforts to be part of solutions, not more of the stigma and shame based problems.

I sincerely do hope that Olivia fully recovers.
I won't slime it with the delusional #b4r. They set the table and the trolls sat down to eat.
Get real New Eden. CCP won't moderate ingame events and organizations, meaning the current setup of plastering r/eve, #tweetfleet and everything else with these sorts of posts will continue to run unchecked with the worst of this community. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
Lots of people seem to think that because I'm against #b4r means I'm one of those trolls. I'm not a troll. I'm not really even against #b4r. Not even close. This situation proves how it's not a simple black/white issue. I'm literally wishing for the best possible environment and I think we need to keep #b4r seriously tightly moderated to keep this from happening again. Even if that means they need to keep it to private slack channels, ingame channels or even making a separate but nearby clicky on r/eve to the r/b4r subreddit.
I love how big everyone's hearts are, I do love that there's a place like #b4r, but seriously reconsider how you promote yourself it's landed someone in the hospital. Own up to the responsibility. And the trolls deserve a ban.
I hate this part of our game. I guess that's the trouble with not being able to leave RL at the login screen.

Considering the result of such harassment, I'd be very surprised if the potential for criminal charges are not on the table at least. Then again, that would (as it should) be up to others to take that step. Such a shame this happen at all, but also so under the rather odd circumstances.
Anyways, I just hope she's okay and gets better. With any luck, she'll one day look back on this and find someway to use this to make her a stronger person rather than let it bring her down. Let's also hope we as fellow human beings learn well from this so that it doesn't happen again, or that at least we are better prepared to ensure it doesn't go that far again.

Should a big warning sign be placed on log-in screen "EvE is not a good place for mentally instable persons"?
EvE is full of violence, lies, betrayal and rudeness. Some people find it attractive. But for many it's just too much to take.
Anyway, what was happened is really bad, and i wish Olivia will be OK and support community gave will help her to get back to normal. But for havens sake keep her away from EvE or even MMOs at all - just for her own good. Until she will get strong enough to deal with such offends by herself. Making any monuments for her or driving her back in EvE is a Really Bad Idea.
While Arkoth 24 is a sociopathic heartless jerk, offending someone in B4R is just too much even for me. Sanctuary should be stay untouched.
Say to Olivia that rude russian bastard wish her to be strong like a bear and deadly as AK-47.

Sad story. I think we all should take the time and just think about how WE could make Eve a nicer place? I've got shot down by someone as a noob and afterward he gave me the money for my ship back: no hard feelings. Maybe just some friendly words or a "gf" for the looser makes a difference. We should see Eve as a sport where you win or loose but still be a sportsman. Trolling is something I really hate but on B4R it's nearly criminal. Permaban for all accounts is the least, and sadly the only, thing CCP can do.
BTW: In this cases CCP should openly state the punishment and which accounts got banned. Open actions against such idiots may prevent the next incident. |

Appropriate replies are not always obvious to write. We have not seen it happen so we can't really know how bad it got. It obviously got pretty damn bad to drive someone down in the ground that much that they make serious attempts on their lives. As a member , i can only encourage people that see people that start to show signs of distress to PM them and check em out , talk with them a bit and if so required , call for help. Certainly , take them out the abusive environment by telling them to shut the channel where abuse is taking place. Taking people aside and going private may defuse and calm down the person.
OFC people in distress should seek professional help and EVE can certainly get rough in some circles. But it's not everywhere and with everyone.
A good corporation , and good sincere friends , are everywhere in EVE , not all of them are. There's all the game play and role play going on all the time , this is a game after all. There's people that have problems that come here and pass their rage they can't deal with in real life and take it upon others .. Bunches of people could benefit from professional help ..
But us as players , we should keep an eye on those we hold dear and extend a paw to help them and support them when they go through tough times.
Eve is a game yes , but we , as corp mates , should always remember that we get out of the game what we put into it. Spread love and warmth , that's what you get back, spread hate , hatred and violence .. that's what you get back.
Hope she gets better soon .

Harassment is bad, getting people in a position where they contemplate suicide is bad. (although history of humanity has plenty of examples of puberty rituals forcing individuals to do things that make them solidify their place in their tribal/barbaric society then to in turn to lead these puberty rituals which select suitable males for breeding rights, which may not be a suitable topic of conversation in an internet spaceship game's forum in retrospect...)
This may not be the thread for this but: would we care the same (read: to an equal degree) if a male was forced into the situation (so change variable gender; ceteris parabus.) Would this person then also get a community that is great (EVE community is great on occasions...) to erect a citadel in their name. (Although i don't quite get the structure/logic behind buying people citadels for other people it must be related to human emotions.) This leads me to popularity. Is popularity of a person possible factor in getting others to erect monuments to them living or dead? Is there a correlation between gender and popularity leading to irrational acts of philatropy of other parties?
This is a social pondering by myself getting more insight into the humand psyche, try not to take it personally. |

This is exactly the problem. People going through depression and worse need support. When asshats like you come in here and try to shift the blame to the person who was _driven to attempt to take her own life_ because a couple of disgusting human beings wanted to get their wrigglies off, that's a problem with the community. It _absolutely_ had to do with a couple of "dumbasses who don't know when to kick and when to hug". They went to the single space in EVE online that's supposed to be removed from the cut-throat, HTFU, 'git gud' pseduoculture of the rest of the game, and proceeded to take advantage of someone's mental state to drive them to attempt suicide.
It's a complete bullshit argument that you're making here to say that the problem lies solely on the person who was vulnerable. It simply is not. One of our own was bullied to attempt to take their life by fellow members of the community we are all a part of and you're sitting here kinda-sorta defending the people who did this?
I'm not depressed, but I have been in a place very close to it (which I did seek professional help to deal with, and I did). When I finally ******* realized it was time to get help it was because my friends helped me realize that I needed it. They did that by talking, listening, and ******* empathizing with me about my problems.
I'm lucky. I had close friends who were willing to lend me an ear. I can't speak for Olivia, I don't know her personally or what her circle of friends are like. Some people simply are not as lucky as I am. They have to seek other avenues to find people to listen and empathize with them.
Obligatory "Of course B4R is not a replacement for professional help". ******* duh, we all realize this. People do not, however, simply have a switch flipped in their head where they wake up one morning and say 'I need to get professional help' in a vaccum. More goes into it than simply that; the switch isn't a toggle, it's a dimmer, and sometimes people need some help turning the brightness up. |

As usual, as in any online community, there are people that like to cross the line of human decency and forget the contest of the game.
To have weak people in game isn't an excuse to play mentally with them, in the comfort of anonymity behind a screen.
Like the past story of a scam that continued outside the game on Soundcloud. The guy played mentally with his human target, which this one was out of bound of the context of Eve to accept such things too...
It' s never all a one-sided story, and also not only specific to online communities... |
