I've been running level 4s in a Drake for about a month and a half and I'm loving it. I use very little Tech II gear (AB II, BCS II, Hobgoblin IIs) and I have about 11.5k shield HP and a peak shield regen of about 70HP/sec. Missions are easy for the most part, and I pretty much don't ever have to warp out unless I do something really, really dumb although I've yet to get a Worlds Collide in my ship's current incarnation. That having been said, I have some questions about the majority of Drake mission setups that I see here on the forums.
On most missions (i.e. not omni-resist ones), I run an afterburner. It gets me up to just shy of 400 m/s, reduces torpedo damage some, and it helps me better dictate my engagement range. Why do so few other people run afterburners on a Drake for missions?
I run three BCS IIs and an SPR. It gives me good DPS even without Tech II Heavy Launchers and lets me take down pretty much any battleship I come across with ease. Why do so many people gimp their DPS for such a tough tank?
Finally, why do so many people say that you need a Tech II tank to do level 4s in a Drake? Granted that most Tech II shield stuff is fairly easy to train for, but I would hardly say it's necessary if you know what you're doing.
I guess it's a matter of personal taste more than anything else, but for me the best way to fight an enemy is to do so on my own terms and to end the fight quickly.

I think missions tend to be more dependant on tactics and skills rather than quality of your fittings. Most people probably don't run missions with maximum efficiency and and hence gimp damage by fitting a bigger tank. If you know what you are doing and can trust your fittings it's always better IMO to fit for high damage.
I use an arti fitted Maelstrom and mostly snipe from range using max damage and a gimped tank and hardly ever get hit. But other players use AC guns which of course puts one in the thick of the action and hence have to use a stronger tank. Different tactics different fittings.

Well, I'll tell you why "my Drake" has 150+ peak recharge (60 average) and high resists. AFK, full room aggro missionrunning. It's that simple. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

But how are you killing things while AFK? Your 5 light drones? I thought that real AFK missioning involved tanking full room aggro while your drones went off and killed everything.

Why?
Because AE lvl 4 has a bonus room, and who doesn't want to solo it?
I know I do, and I did just yesterday in my Drake...
I can resist 2000 dps exp, why is that a crime? leave me alone :(

Ahh, AFK FoFs. Crappy DPS, but with an unbreakable tank, you can just come back every couple of minutes to turn them back on after reloading. Interesting idea....
Originally by: Rose Deathscythe What kind of setups are you guys running?
It's probably not hard to figure out. Full Tech II/Officer/Faction tank, Tech II Heavies (Actually, probably Arbalest Heavies if they're using FoF), and a head full of the appropriate implants.
Of course, they'll be slow as heck and won't have as much DPS while running the FoFs, but if you can do it while AFK, who cares....
Originally by: IceAero If you're not using 3 Large Shield Extender IIs...you're wrong =)
I beg to differ, but to each their own. High quality named tank leaves me enough CPU for more BCS IIs. Of course, I don't AFK missions, so that could be a difference.

I got a phone call in WC lvl 4 and then forgot I was playing...went out and got dinner then watched a bball game.
I lost my drones :(
I use only 1 BCU II...it sucks, but hopefully I can get T2 heavies soon to make up for this.
2 T2 Hardeners 1 Shield Recharger II 3 Large Shield Extender IIs
1 BCU 3 SPR IIs (or 1 and 2 PDU IIs [they give a bonus to the extenders so its more even than you'd think])
MY recharge is a little over 210, good enough for me. I know i can do better without the BCU but eeh.

Doing lv3's in the drake, but im have bout 163hp peak recharge and roughly 70 passive resist across the board average. I can afk any mission, throw out some drones turn on the FoF missiles an come back every 5-10min to turn back on the missiles if i need to. In fact i got distracted one day and left the computer for bout 3hours, came back and the whole room was still shooting me. My only regret about that was that I forgot to deploy the drones.

Yo.
Although to be fair I run them in the weirdest setups possible, and I don't run them 23/7. I do it for the fun, not the ISK. If I want ISK I go 0.0 ratting (more straight out money).

FoFs are nice, even if slightly weaker as the regular versions... the only thing that would be missing is the ability to re-fire them when they reload (for full highsec AFKness), or at least a better "missile-board-AI" that doesn't go for structures and stuff like that first.
Besides, don't forget, what makes the Drake even more attractive is the ability to fit a PvP/omni tank INSIDE missions and still be able to get away with it scratch-free. Semi-active, semi-passive tank: 3 LSE, 3 hardners (EM/Th/Invul -> with L4 BCs you get lowest resist Kin at 66.4%), 2 BCU, 2 SPR, 3 T1 purger rigs (over 160 peak recharge with maxed-out skills and implants and T2 modules).
Also, the ability to actually pull off a FULL passive omni-tank (completely "capless") in L4 missions and still be able to complete them (swap active hardners for T2 passive, swap invul for kin, swap 2nd BCU for another SPR). Last but not least, the Drake is probably the ONLY T1 non-capital ship that CAN solo-tank most L4 missions using only base T1 gear right now. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

It's great to have unbeatable tank, but isn't it too slow in killing? If you get a Raven with cruise missiles and 2xBCU, I think that you will kill so much faster that you don't need that uber shield.

Except the specific skills (and GMP), same "extra" skills are used for all warheads. So, here's the numbers you get without taking any (missile) skills or extra modules/rigs into account:
Raven, 6x T1 siege -> 6x450 damage every 24 sec = 112.50 base DPS (~140 DPS with L4 caldari BS) Raven, 6x T1 cruise -> 6x300 damage every 22 sec = 81.81 base DPS (~102 DPS with L4 caldari BS) Nighthawk, 6x T1 heavy -> 6*150 damage every 11.25 sec = 80 base DPS (96 kin DPS with L4 command ships) Drake, 7x T1 heavy -> 7x150 damage every 15 sec = 70.00 base DPS (84 kin DPS with L4 battlecruisers)
The torpedo Raven is obviously still the "king of damage", against large targets.
A cruise Raven doesn't have THAT much more DPS as a heavy missiles Drake (especially if you use Scourges), and at the same time the Drake's heavies can hit even frigates for decent damage (and Nighthawk's even moreso) while the cruise missiles... well, not quite that well. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Quote: Raven, 6x T1 cruise -> 6x300 damage every 22 sec = 81.81 base DPS (~102 DPS with L4 caldari BS)
Quote: Drake, 7x T1 heavy -> 7x150 damage every 15 sec = 70.00 base DPS (84 kin DPS with L4 battlecruisers)
You don't calculate correct. The Raven can do it's 102 DPS with ANY missile in ANY mission. Drake can make 84 DPS only with Kinetic. Now, we know that most missions are against Guristas but not all. And if you put Nighthawk in the comparison, put also Caldari Navy Raven.
As for the damage to small targets - there are tech2 medium drones. If it is smaller than cruiser, they can do the job. If it is cruiser or larger - the cruise missile damage is fine (heavy missiles don't benefit that much for all the skills that boost damage against smaller or faster targets).

Of course it's slow, slow and boring, that's why they go for a fit with which they can go afk, telling themselves how uber they are that they can do these boring missions afk while others 'slave' away at them, blissfully ignorant to the fact that those others do them twice as fast making twice as much money.
