Okay, so a few days ago I posted about a friend of mine was interested in playing as an Alpha. Well, he's gotten a bit ahead of himself, and actually started today.
I spent about four hours today taking him through the very basics of how the game works. Setting waypoints, navigating, etc. We had to part ways for a bit, so I sent him 10 mil to putz around with until we reconvene.
Now I'm thinking long-term. I'm making sure his integration with the game is going smoothly. He knows about suicide ganking. He and I have discussed zkill killboards over the past few weeks (probably what got him excited enough to start today). He knows not to autopilot, not to linger, not to make himself an obvious target, etc etc. But going past the tutorials, I want his EvE experience to be better than mine. I don't want him stuck in highsec like I was/am. I want him earning a little isk to sustain himself, and spending the rest of his time shooting other spaceships.
So, after I feel he's gotten a basic grip on the game, I want to send him hurtling through space at a corp that will do him well for that. First thing that came to mind was the RvB thing. Is that still recommended? And do they operate in areas other than highsec? Because I want my friend to experience low and nullsec sooner rather than later.
I don't know if he'll eventually sub or stay alpha. So far he's really enjoying the game (and he really enjoys the stories from the killboards. Surprised me that he knew some vague details from the major battles that made the news). But I don't know if he's having enough fun to sub, or even if he can scrape together the money to do so. So, what's RvB's stance on the upcoming Alpha clones?
And if not RvB, what other newbie-friendly corps can I send him hurtling at?
Let's discuss overhauling the way we get intel in EvE.

I recommend setting him up with Pandemic Horde. We have lots of helpful people to answer all his questions and teach him stuff. There's loads of content too especially since we're fighting a war currently.
Full disclosure: I am a recruiter for Pandemic Horde.
I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

One of the newbro corps or FW and then if you go even solo be SOCIAL. Talk, meet people and join fleets. All of them and spend time making contacts.
If he likes personal freedom tell him FW is better. As much as the newbro corps/alliances are if you are a self starter FW can be great that way as your on your own dime so to speak. Then dont jump at the first recruitment. Get a hang of low, run away, engage, make isk.
If you want company then newbro corp it is. If you feel better in a group and like more interaction this is the better way.
Both can teach you pvp in a slightly different style and being social and making isk. How much social interaction will determine null or low. Id say low is more a solo player with social tendencies game style while null is more group is all mentality. Different personality types thrive in different environments.

Personally I let the guys find their own way, while answering questions when asked. It depends on what people want, but personally I had a lot of fun in my early days just searching through all the resources and clicking on Show Info on pretty much everything. The figuring out part can be fun for some people, and the early days are quite special this way. If he wants to get on action quick though, then yeah, I think FW is pretty good starting point.

EVE University comes to mind.
If they are still the same thing, there would be lots of internet spaceships to learn from there. |

If a newbie joins any large volume group then all he'll learn is how to follow orders and to "fit in", all those newbie groups/traps are all the same in that regard. "join this massive group" is not a good start to create well rounded and knowledgable players, the groups who do this just want cannon fodder and increase their numbers. Not saying they're necessarily bad but they breed a very specific type of player, one I'm not so sure we need more of.
Everyone has different goals, drives, interests and preferred way to learn & advance. Why not ask him what he's looking for play style wise and "intensity" wise. Simply educate him on the possibilities and traps and teach him that dying or failing is fine as long as he learns from it. |

Having been in exactly your friend's position but with guides and the UniWiki to help me rather than a person, I can tell you what I've done so far that he may find useful.
If he likes shooting stuff and combat-related activities it may do to set him up with ratting first to get a good isk base. In training for that, he'll be training skills also useful in PVP. Highsec ratting is not very rewarding, but it can give him experience for nullsec ratting. It'll take him a while to skill into the necessary boats for null ratting (unless I'm missing something here), so while he does that he could also try mission running or exploration.
I myself am an explorer trying to skill into ratting, and exploring is a wonderful way to get into null, make isk, get killed, and thus learn how to not get killed. |

If your friend decides they like "exploration" I would give them a gentle push in the direction of Signal Cartel.

One of the other things that worked well with my ex-gf, a WoW player, is buy them cheap ships fit for all manner of things and then go run content with them in high sec. Each day do something different and just give them a cheap ship they can fly for the respective task at hand. The new starter skills make this a superb method of doing things. By the first week youll have done most of the actual Eve content available. Then they will know what they like or dont like. Yes it means you dont make isk and neither do they really but thats not the point imo. Its the task and the fun that is important here.
From there they can begin to train into the min/max or fun/hr setting of stuff they really did enjoy doing with you. But they will always have the base of having discovered most things that Eve has to offer at least so if they want to try something else they can later on too.
The high sec route then leads to low and WHs and lastly into null. It will be boring and mundane for you as the mentor but it vastly helps to have help in terms of dps, tank or knowledge right there with you. Think of it like dad teaching you to ride a bike and watching over you so you dont fall over till you can take off the training wheels and ride away.
As for making isk if you can run L4s let him salvage. A Noctis with even semi decent skills is a few hours away to skill into and salvage and loot in a mission is a very lucrative way of earning isk.
Theres really a lot of things a vet can help mentor newbros into if they dont have to worry about their own wallets.

Dreddit is Recruiting.(tm)
Seriously, RvB or Eve University are probably his best choices to learn the basics. But there are plenty of other things he can do and places he can go. If he wants out of hisec, then set corp recruitment filter to exclude hisec. Dreddit really is recruiting.
