I don't mean ship name like Hurricane or tengu.
i mean the name you can set.
whats the purpose of this? what parts of the game use it?
like D-scan, probe scanning ships?
or is it just something for the individual and not affect gameplay at all |

So you feel like you own the ship. Since I am in FW with the Gallente, I always use GFDU then a name for my ship. I thought about using different names each time one went down, but figured I would soon run out of names. Some of the names I have seen for ships have been amusing, others well best not said. It's a small feature that really has no real in game impact but it's a nice touch that CCP allows such a feature. So yeah, as you pointed out D-Scan. You see a few firetails on D-Scan, a few names you do not recognized but then there is one that you do..you know to fear this pilot as they know what they are doing. You might not have time to check zkillboard to see what your chances are...but if they stick to the same name for the ship, you remember it. |

Mainly just personalisation for players.
Some uses:
1. Make it easy to organise your hangar - different names for the same ship can help you know the fit quickly
2. As a bluff for PvP - If you want to look like a noob but aren't, leaving your ship name with your character name can make you look incompetent and engageable. Then you melt the face of the guy that engages you
3. As a bluff - this one never works, but by naming your ship after a different ship you hope to disguise what your ship is on d-scan. Eg. Call a Svipul, a Coercer or something
4. Limit intel - just calling your ship anything so people who dscan don't know who is flying what
5. To send messages - "Join XYZ Corp", "Grr Gons", etc.
Probably others, but #1 is a good reason to have names.
Dracvlad - "...Your intel is free intel, all you do is pay for it..." && "...If you warp on the same path as a cloaked ship, you'll make a bookmark at exactly the same spot as the cloaky camper..."

You can see the ship name in d-scan, so if you leave your ship with the default name people will be able to figure out who is flying it and from there they can gather intel on you and decide if/how they want to engage you. This is important in wormhole space especially where operational security is paramount |

If I don't want people to know it's me, then I rename my ship. This can be especially confusing for people hunting you in WH space. I often choose to not rename my alt's ships if I want to use them as bait as that suggests they're not very experienced.
Overall though it just allows you to personalise your experience, and indeed if you have say two Legions, one active and one passive, you can name them to indicate which is which as an aide to hangar management.
WH corps utilise the renaming function a lot by employing a unique naming convention so that friendlies can be identified (loosely) on d-scan. This, of course, can be abused :)

At times like this, i am reminded how vastly differently EVE experience is to so many others. RL has been rough lately but during my prime at time, I could easily lose 10 ships a night in RvB maybe more. Having replacements on hand is useful. Now I like the kestrel. It's a beautiful ship with a variety of fits. I go pure range and hit out to 80+ km or brawl and every point in between.
Now I have about 60 Kestrels fit for combat. 20 are close range brawlers with an active tank. 20 are brawlers with passive tank, 20 kite at range with a long point, 20 are extreme range. If I had to guess which is which out of the 60, I would go mad. Instead, each type shares a name. (thank you CCP for letting me rename a ship to the fitting name!)
Now realize Kestrels are not all I fly. Vexors... Range DPS, brawly with blasters, brawl with neuts, tankier for FCing, and more. Being able to make each ship let's me distinguish what I am getting into.
Now imagine you are a logistics office for a nul group. You have to have doctrine fits ready and up on contract. This means T2 and T2 fits for each doctrine plus some doctrines use the same hull but different fits, plus you have to assemble them, put them on contract and keep spares. Being able to make each is vital. Yes the names aren't unique but Temp Art T1 vs Temp Art T2 vs Temp AC T1 helps.
So yes your hangar may be small but for some... Ship name is vital and it's more about organization than HMS Carebear. |

Other people can see your ship name in:
- d-scan - in-space brackets (if they enable it)
By default, your ship name is something like "Memphis Baas's Tengu", which means all they have to do is open d-scan to figure out what I'm flying. As indicated above, this can be good, or bad. |

As well as the reasons listed so far it's possible to have a quiet conversation with someone hunting you, as you see probes close in or spread out the ship name can change from OH HAI to Gooby Pls to Get GoodGäó. As a spooked newbro i saw a ship on lowsec d-scan named I see Dead People, gave me the all-over fidgets, since then i've named many a destroyer @;::;@ On my first birthday in Eve i saw on d-scan a Thrasher named Salvage Only No PVP. Needless to say i warped directly to it and applied dps, thinking i was taking bait and about to die. But no, afk thrasher was salvage fit and woke up half destroyed to open fire on the acceleration gate into the lowsec combat site.

There are a lot of examples of a smart ship name being beneficial to the player or the fleet. But before that I should back up a bit. The name function is there for basic admin. Ships in hangar, and in your inventory--the ship name is the only way to keep track of whether it's an armor fit, or whatever else makes the fit unique. Maybe it's your higgs rigged Thanatos, I don't know.
That name field is added to data tables you encounter in space, and in things like Dscan prove beneficial to other players. You know the rules and so do I never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna turn around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye. Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

Roleplay :) all my ships have angel tickers in front, Gistii, Gistum, Gist, shadow for cloaky's, and i like to pretend my character has stolen a high ranking officers battleship and name faction ships by officer names (Mizuro Cybon etc etc)
i guess naming ships is better for sorting and knowing what ship is what fit

The best parts of the game and game play use it. The parts that make EvE not another forgettable console game. The actual immersion into the the dystopian far future of humanity in space where we are still our own worse enemies.
It's really what makes EvE special.
... ... ...
Though sometimes, it's also used for young melinneals to make phallic references.

anyway, i knew that part of the naming thing. my question was more focused to if combat scanners would show your ship name instead of ship or so on.
and those were answered in the first 3 replies. |

Excessively helpful if you run shared ships in a SMA or corp hangar, or have multiple doctrine fits of the same ship.
When there's a hangar with like 20 fitted procurers in it, it's good to know which ones are "t1 newbie mining procurer" which ones are "t2 tank procurer" and which ones are "bait procurer" without having to inspect the fittings for each one individually.
Or, you know "PvP lulVexor" and "ratting Vexor" etc. etc.
It's just a way to organize your ships |

This one actually works often, employed properly. Some corps are dumb enough to name all their ships with one general naming scheme. Copy their scheme, and it makes it MUCH more difficult for them to tell what you're in.
Alternatively, fly a probe, and call it Core Scanner Probe.
Both absolutely do work from time to time. |

Ok so I'll spell it out: it doesn't matter if YOU have a Tengu. I look at names in the Local channel and name my ships as if they belonged to other people in the area. People hunting ME will see "Lasisha Mishi's Ibis, actually a Tengu," and assume that the only trick is that you named your ship differently to trick people. That is, they'll assume it's your ship, not mine, and they won't try to probe it down. |
