So me and my friend both got in our covators today. (we trained up to it because we thought it would bring great success) mined hemo for about 40 minutes and some others like jaspet/omber for about another hour... hour and 40 minutes of mining doesnt even build us 10 frigates that sell for 145k iskies. 10 x 145k =..... 1,450,000 isk. Hrm. plus the bpo which was (cheap) i think 2mil lol.
Im curious to know how can you profit off of mining and building stuff? am i just not understanding somthing?
Thanks in advance!

ME research on the BP and production eff 5 would reduce the cost of building them. Refining with refining 5 + refining eff 5 + the specific ore refining 5 = more minerals per refine
Getting the most out of your minerals + good industry skills would net a pretty noticable difference

Not to mention getting good refining skills to refine your ore would also net you far more than just the ore unrefined. -

Building: Buy BPO, buy minerals, build. Profit. Mining: Mine, sell minerals. Profit.

They make money since the minerals are "free", because apparently their time is worth nothing.

Well that logic simply doesn't hold. If you mine and sell the minerals to yourself you would make more profit ofcourse.
Macro-miners is part of the problem, they flood the market with minerals at a price that a real player (who has to compare a another activity to the boredom that is mining) cant compete with incomewise.
Finding the right combination of modules there is a demand for (rather than ships) and the right markets to sell it too is key to success.
Good luck!

Okay:
1. Mining
You need to get as good mining skills as you can. I suggest training up to better strip miners (Modulated Strip Miner ) and the various crystals for the ores you plan to mine ( don't use the t2 crystals...just the tech 1 crystals)
You will also want to train the skill to have at least 1 mining upgrade on your ship.
You might also want to have one or both of you train Mining Foreman and leadership skills. Get a BC buddy to train Mining Director. Put a Mining Link - Laser Optimization module on his BC. Make him squad leader.
Refining:
Make sure to have Refining level 5, and Refining Efficiency to a minimum of 3, then the proper Ore Processing skill to level 3. (You might need even higher if it is a poor refining station)
You will want a standing of 6.8 or higher with the NPC owners of the station you refine at. ( assuming refining at an NPC station). This reduces their tax to nothing.
Building:
The builder needs Production Efficiency Level 5. This is really a must in the given market climate. It is difficult to make money without it.
Research:
You should do ME research on the BPO. Depending on the BPO you should get varying levels of it. For a frigate you can get to ME 20 in about a months time with decent research skills. At the very very least research to ME 1. Idea: Treaties Idea: Jump Rigs |

If I mine for 3 weeks and then sell all of the products for 1 ISK, I've made a profit. So long as I've not had to buy anything ;).

Erm, this logic simply doesn't hold. Macro mining is a bit of a problem yes, but it isn't really capable of the kind of impact you are claiming.
And the way you imply that it has "crashed" the lower end of the market, please then, explain why tritanium and pyrite are at an all time high price atm? RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!

6.67 will be enough. Might shave off a few missions =AFK=

could be less macroers, and a serious BoB war going on contributing to that
I run 2 to 3 accounts at the same time 1 miner in covetor 1 hauler in iteron 5 with 39k space and either a cruiser or a smaller iteron on the third account avg 8 hours a day mining, avg haul per hour 3 to 4 mil in .7 to .8 empire space on a good day i make 40 mil, bad day 20 mil for production you need to find a better product to make, frigates isnt where its at do some researh in the market to find what sells for a good investment on your time spent.

To run a good profit mining op you need the following.
1 station, pos or huge cluster of cans. Expect to need about 1M m3 for a decent mining op. 1 tank, to protect the miners from NPCs and run the mining foreman link 1 hauler X miners
tank tanks, miners start filling cans, hauler instawarps from cans to where ever you temporarily store your stuff.
With the current mineral prices you get around 20-30M per hour of mining per miner in a coverator. So for this to be profitable, you need at least 4 miners to get a reasonable profit per person involved in the op. Either run several accounts or... Well mining is not so profitable these days... ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

To run a good mining op these days you need to get all your miners into battleships / battlecruisers or if they can't fly those then cruiser gangs, have them rat in two or three systems setting up good spawns. The refine the loot, collect the isk and carrier jump bought minerals up from empire.
Unless your mining bistot or arkanor, perhaps even if your mining bistot, this is by far the most time and cash efficient method to get your manufacturing minerals.
It sucks.
If you do have access to arkanor mine the hell out of it, mine nothing else, ship the excess minerals to empire for sale and buy up those your missing.

Mine scordite or plagioclase in high sec.
Have skills (refining V, ref eff + ore specific skill at level 2) so that you get 0% loss at the station where you refine the ore.
Have standings (6.67 or better) so that you get 0% tax loss at the station where you refine the ore.
Sell the minerals = good profit!
If you have production efficiency V and a well researched bpo (ME 10 and higher) you can build stuff and make profit also. But selling the raw minerals gives good profit already!

Or more exactly, you made a profit of say 100 million, and then a loss of 99,999,999 ISK by selling the products at less than they were worth.

Because capital ship building and warship building (to replace the losses in the war) is at an all time high.

QFT!
Hell, 50k is considered discount prices out in Fountain Core (and I imagine other NPC 0.0). Shuttles (and nanos/istabs) in 0.0 have to be some of the highest margin products in the game... |

Keep in mind a lot of frigate prices are fixed by endless supply from NPC stations - they aren't priced to reflect the underlying value of the minerals. Make something else! ;p

It does, because mining and manufacturing are two different things. Sure you can do both, and of course you then wouldnt sell the minerals before building stuff with them.
The OP seems to assume he "has" to mine everything for the stuff he wants to build himself. This is of course untrue, and in fact unprofitable: If you have ISK lying around the best thing to do is to buy minerals and build stuff to sell it for a humble profit - if you can be bothered.
If you're unhappy with the profit of mining then stop doing it. But that doesnt have anything to do with manufacturing. And that you cannot earn anything with manufacturing below PE5 is a myth. Profits are humble, 10% is to be expected for ships in my experience. Of course there are modules that will give you much higher profit ratios.
