Is there any reason disallowing haulers with sufficient space to scoop unpiloted ships out of space?

Most ships are far far far far far too big to fit in even the biggest hauler unless it's a Freighter or some other big capital class. All the non capital ships would only be able to pick up like one or two Frigates at most... I think... I can't be sure though.. I think I havnt' logged in for a month or two..

If it isn't repackaged it won't fit into a hauler.

An assembled Crusader fell out of a Badger II I killed once. I couldn't fly it and it was in Jita so I had to pop it too. --- Mods stop nerfing my sig! Err - what sig? - Timmeh Yes quite! |

it was packaged before you popped the hauler. packaged ships (and unassembled containers) will auto assemble when ejected into space. you can do it without popping the hauler too...package a shuttle...put in hauler, go into space, right click -> jettison...and you end up with an assembled shuttle.
kinda silly if you think about it.

You're right, that doesn't make any sense. Oh well. --- Mods stop nerfing my sig! Err - what sig? - Timmeh Yes quite! |

It is silly, but I agree with the OP. If I have the space, I should be able to scoop the thing.
I came across an empty Minmatar frigate floating in space the other day, and couldn't do a thing about it. I couldn't scoop it, and couldn't just fly to it in my pod and jump in because I have no minmatar skills.
If they auto-assemble when ejected, they should auto-repackage when scooped. Perhaps this could be explained by saying that all Indy and cargo ships have auto-repackagers built into them that use nanites to repackage scooped items.
You could get around the "no repackaging damaged items" issue by having the repackager also repair the item, with a time delay depending on the size of the object and the extent of the damage. Of course, this would ONLY work with Indy's and freighters, or maybe just Indys. It would work with the whole "industrial" theme to have them have some built-in repair functions. As to the installed weapons, drones and modules, I would think that they would have to be destroyed in the process, since repackaging a ship in a station without stripping it first also destroys any installed items.

Book mark it, ask in local if anyone can fly the ship, offer to share the profits. Give the guy the book mark, he gets the ship and gives you half the value in ISK - if he doesn't, you kow he can't be trusted, if he does, you get some ISK and a new friend - either way you gain something. -AS |
