Hello all
As anyone in the commonwealth knows Remembrance Day is approaching and this year it will be a few days before the parades which are always held on Sunday.
As an ex-serviceman myself I thought this year lets have a free for all of anything funny that brings up service, it can be EVE based, or anything at all, clips from favourite TV shows, films, songs, sketches, whatever to give us a light hearted look at what we are to remember.
No posts after 11/11/11 please.
I left early after some muppet para broke my knee when I was clearing a pub, but back in the old days we were encouraged to keep pen pals, all five of mine passed away in service, 2 in Northern Ireland and 3 in Iraq. Anytime one of them came to mine back in Wales we had a lot of drink and above all a good laugh.
Friday is the day to start thinking the sad thoughts, until then lets go for a bit of mad fun and above all remembering.
This is an old clip but I find funny:

or it could be a classic:

This is not any sort of a troll, I lost 3 great-grandparents in WW1 and a lot of relatives in WW2, but as my gran used to say, sometimes if you don't laugh you'd just cry, lets get some jollies going. |

Not to troll, but this would likely be better placed in Out of Pod Experience since the subject matter is in fact out of game. Maybe one of the ISD would be kind to move this there?
As a fellow vet, the gesture is nice though.
"Tomahawks?"
"----in' A, right?"
"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."
"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Great thread Choo Mi. I will always remember the Blackadder series, following Baldrick and Edmund through history. I will also never forget watching the final episode, those final 3 minutes were amazing. It summed up the bravery, stupidity and needless anguish of the trenches in a way only Elton and Curtiss could.
Going from laughter to tears in 30 seconds. Wonderful TV. |

Death Of A Soldier
I glanced him first upon that day Stepping smartly down the path A young man, battles finest Unaware of war's untold wrath I saw him next drenched in muck Battle hard and oh so sad I pity him to this day What a fine, fine young lad I saw him last on that field of blood The price of freedom he had borne Now in death's hand he lay His body bruised, black and torn I ask that we not forget The price that he did pay For God, country and what was right On the field that day
- one of mine from yesteryears
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

It's known as Veteren's day for those in the US, but the same date, though here this date is for generally for all vets (focusing on the living) while Memorial day (last Monday of May) is our remberance day.
The day before Veterans day, Nov 10, a very special birthday - 241 years old.

I've been rather lucky to know that most that I served with that I keep up with are still around, so I'll give a few humorous anecdotes.
At one of my duty stations I supported the training of Marine officers candidates at OCS in Quantico, VA. By tradition, the physical component of the regimen is led by a British Royal Marine, at the time a *Colour Sergeant from Wales with a very thick brogue. One day during a 'mandatory fun' event, I found myself playing a few rounds of golf with the XO, the Colour Sergeant, a fellow Corporal, and three of our young non-rated Marines. Since this was a mixed-rank group in a "relaxed" setting, we were encouraged to speak more-or-less freely to each other.
At some point, the discussion turned to deployments and getting used to being in a foreign country - specifically getting used to local color and languages. One of my young Lance Corporals turned to the Colour Sergeant and asked him how long it took him to get used to using the language here in Virginia. I never know what 'pole-axed' looked like on a living person, but the Colour Sergeant stood there for a bit with a slow blink, then turned to the hapless Marine and told him, "Well, since we invented the language, it didn't take me very long at all. You're the ones who keep mucking it up." Complete with cheeky grin.
A good laugh was had by all... even the red-faced LCpl.
*Notice that random 'U', it's important. Colour Sergeant is a RM rank, while Color Sergeant is a USMC billet. Yes... at one point the Colour Sergeant served as our unit's Color Sergeant. I'm sure it gave those writing the orders a fit.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
Good Luck, everyone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH3-Gt7mgyM - The moving final scene from the BBC Comedy about World War 1 "Blackadder goes Forth". Made so much more effective because by this point in the show you have grown to know and love the characters. Hits hard. Highly reccomended and Well worth checking out the whole mini series if you can track it down.
my ideas are my own and have no reflection on the ideas of my current corp / alliance.
excuse my terrible typing.

As a squaddie brat and an ex-crab (RAF for those unfamiliar with HM Forces inter service slang), this one makes me laugh every time.
Civilised behaviour is knowing that violence is barbaric, but paying other people to do it is business.

Well, it is 11/11 now in Europe. Ex pat living in NZ, i'm proud of the sacrifice my great grandad made in WW1. I have since learned about the willingness and bravery of all New Zealand people (Oz and pacific islanders too) to fight in far away lands to help Britain at that time. Quite overwhelming times and deeds to match.
We shouldn't forget the sacrifices made by the opposing forces too, thrown into a hell also.
I'd like to share the Christmas truce without comment.
