I've found just another single mention of this in a locked thread, so I will start a new one on that topic:
Apart of all the other changes, this game should have the sun damage.. why ?
First - it's really really good for the immersion. Sun should deal thermal damage the closer you get to it... It is the case in every SciFi title ever made. It has to be. Second - It won't ruin the gameplay or disbalance it in any way. Everyone knows that you DON'T warp to sun coz you will get caught easily... so it would simply punish ignorant people who continue to do so... Third - well the damage don't have to be huge... just slow degrading of the shield - heat damage applied over every "cycle" of the sun... being the strongest if you warp at 0...
Mining - Someone said that asteroid belts should somehow do some damage.. well we have mercoxit now doing that, but... with the incoming changes, mining will be ridiculously OP, so things like this on some other good ores, like triclinic bistot, monoclinic bistot.. would add up to the price of the ores...
Smartbombing while in warp : this bugs me for some time now... How the hell can we warp right through the sun which is a giant nuclear explosion and not take any damage, but simple pipe smartbombing with petty DPS will obliterate your ship ? When warping, ship obeys some other laws of physics - quantum physics and all, it doesn't even exist in our dimension, so to speak... So if I can warp through the sun, why exactly I still get smartbomb damage ?
I know it's not done before for the game playability, but still... some of those remarks would enable maybe slightly better immersion into this already perfect game... give us at least the sun damage... just a bit of it :)

If it's already in every scifi title ever made, why is this thread needed at all?
If instead, it's not in every scifi title, as Eve clearly demonstrates, then there are obviously scifi titles that don't care about sun damage and so Eve doesn't need to change.

This isn't Elite Dangerous A lot in EVE is abstract... warping to 0 to a planet, gate or station doesn't put you a dead 0.0m... try probing a moon and you'll understand what I mean.
warping at zero put you at a safe (implied) distance from the target |

@ Faxtarious
Well yeah I could live with that theory - it puts you at the safe distance from the object you warp at...
But... the Sun is dangerous. Safe distance from our sun would be... well.. where the Earth is... and even then, our planet has it's shield against the Sun's radiation. Look, I don't mean to claim it is realistic and add it to the game - just because "it's real", that is no valid reason by itself... but I think adding that small detail in the game would bring up more content, more opportunities (for gank ?) and more immersion IMHO. More content, if you will...
@Shae
Well now....that's just pure metaphysics... would it be more accurate if I've said "...almost every other SciFi title..." ? Mind you, English is not my native so I might literally translate from the way we are talking, using our speaking habits... So sorry if I mislead you with the wrong translation...
Quote:...Eve doesn't need to change Well I do not agree with that. Eve is constantly changing if you think about it... so if they totally redo core aspects of the game, what is one small detail more ? The small detail which will add up to the gameplay ? |

We know from extensive field research that mining causes brain damage. So that counts as "already implemented" if you ask me.

the sun use to be dangerous. Warping to it killed you. Guess what.... Awoxers had a field day getting fleets to give them wing or squad positions and warping the group to the sun. People were not happy.
Imagine... A command dessie offers to boost a fleet of miners. He asked if command to keep the fleet anchored on him. He warps the fleet to the sun. No sec status loss, no concord, just another dead group of miners, victims of CODE.
Get a good spy on fleet. He gets wing or squad command. Your capital wing hits the sun and is gone.
Do you really think this is a good idea to bring back? I don't. Yeah it leads to less than perfect immersion, but it is a game. No immersion will be perfect. On the other hand it just opens the door to drama, grief, and CCP having to close support tickets with a hwnstic response of don't put people you don't trust in squad positions, wasting their time. Not a fan, glad it is gone. |

Huh ? Didn't know it was there once... Damn yeah that sounds like a solid reason to take it out... But I was suggesting small amounts of damage dealt - not too much... but then it would make no sense to have it at all, right ? Idunno... If they had it in once already and decided to take it out... then I might be on the wrong path here...
Yeah for every "do it" you will get at least one "don' t do it" when it comes to ideas... I see it - as not being lethal to small ships, they would see the damage from the sun being dealt and warp away... also - git gud - as ppl like to say often... be smart, don't blindly enter fleets... It was really bad for the gameplay before all those patches happened, but nowdays... will it be still a bad thing ? With all those alpha clones ? We need a way to filter them out to some degree :P
....Also... Damn I just want to say once in a while "Praise the Sun Lord" XD
@ Faxtarious Yeah dude, got that happening to me too, on several other forums... Annoying as hell, I'd end up with a flaming post instead and got perma-banned, but that's just me :D |

Those changes add nothing to the experience, let's not make eve into a carnival ride, making damage occur because you get near the sun sounds too much like ED and I left that game. |

More content, if you will... You are aware that we have this thing called "shields" right? And "armor"? You know, the things that can withstand point-blank nuclear and antimatter detonations? I mean, do you really think that for the hundreds of years humanity has been a spacefaring race, we haven't figured out how to protect ourselves from something that's in literally every system?
I also fail to see how the sun doing damage will result in more people shooting each other. If anything it will result in less, since capitals are now much riskier to use in case your cyno gets destroyed mid-jump. (you spawn into the sun in that case, which in a realistc universe means bye bye capital)
I'm going to build a big wall that will keep the Gallente out, and they're going to pay for it!

All the planets and gates n stuff used to orbit properly too, meaning you needed to keep updating your BM on the regular :) It was realistic, yet really annoying and as such we're better off this way. Same for sun damage i think.
