Good is a relative term. Everyone has their own opinions and perceptions on what appeals to them. (obviously, right?) To me, a good movie can be good for various reasons, depending on the genre, strength of plots, character development, etc. For action movies, I don't need a philosophical or practical justification for why it's "fun" to see one guy beat the crap out of another guy; sometimes it just is. However, for movies that attempt to aspire to a deep conceptual level or are philosophical in purpose, I often find myself being more critical and enjoying such a movie in an entirely different way than of another genre. In other words, a "good" movie can be a very relative thing and the definition of good itself can vary from genre to genre. So, I ask the movie addicts of EVE to speak up and list or describe their favorite movies!
Here are some(quick list) of mine:
Action/Violent Drama Pulp Fiction Die Hard 13th Warrior True Romance Sin Chronicles of Rid**** No Escape
Fantasy/Creative Brothers Grimm Constantine Time Bandits Willow Bram Stoker's Dracula Underworld: Evolution Blade Princess Mononoke (anime)
Drama: Traditional, Satirical, Emotional, Social Commentary Devil's Advocate Bronx Tale God Father Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Lion in Winter Stand By Me
Conceptual/Philosophical What Dreams May Come Stigmata The Fountain Akira (anime) Spirited Away (anime)
Sci-Fi 5th Element Alien Strange Days 12 Monkeys

Geez....where to start? Ok, I'll give it a try...
Sci-Fi:
Dark City (if you haven't seen this, do it!!)
The Last Starfighter (if ever there was a movie that cried 'sequel please!'...)
Aliens (-THE- Military SciFi movie of all time, to which others aspire)
The Time Machine (2002) (So much in one movie..)
Serenity (If you are playing EVE, This is your movie...)
The Terminator (Very few movies feel as though the characters are really scared or desperate as in this one)
The Matrix (What other SciFi movie tackles Free Will and Predestination as well?)
2001 (The movie that started people thinking about what they -DIDN'T- know about the universe..)
Star Wars (Still the best and about only attempt to depict a developed, galaxy-spanning Empire -after- it has been around for a while)
Mystery:
Final Approach (1991) (This one makes your head spin, and the final ending is anything but what you expect)
Horror/Thriller:
Angel Heart (So you thought it was easy to escape...)
Poltergeist (When you understand what's -really- going on, and -who- they are up against, the real terror sets in)
Battle Royale (if only it had been the same as the book....)
Action Comedy:
Demolision Man (Political Correctness gone berzerk)
True Lies (So you wanna be James Bond, eh?)
Last Action Hero (Puts the Action genre in it's place, and shows why we love these shows)
Comedy:
UHF (What other movie spoofs so many other movies as well??)
Airplane (When nothing but the most off-beat will do...)
The Return of the Pink Panther (I think...the one with Inspector Clusoue's former boss as the Evil Genius...)
Galaxy Quest (The best send-up of Star Trek ever)
Documentary/Historical:
Trinity and Beyond (All you wanted to know about the development of nuclear weapons, and the things you never did)
9|11 (Forget political statements, this is all that matters)
Koyaanisqatsi (Makes you think without a single word said)

Forgot one last genre from my post above:
Anime:
Gallforce (1,2,3) (These three movies depict what war would be like in EVE if Titans' Doomsday Weapon had the power people think it does, and why it won't happen. About the best space-war anime of all time.)
Patlabor II (A suspense/political scifi thriller that puts almost every 'live' movie of the type to shame. Explores the concept of peace in a unique way)
Voices of a Distant Star (Explores warfare at lightspeed, and it's effects on those who do so)
Gunbuster (Also explores space warfare at lightspeed, with the added problem of an alien enemy that humanity may not be able to defeat)
Ghost in the Shell (Another great action/political thriller that explores what our concept of sentience and humanity is.)
Macross Plus (Top Gun with far better characters and a great example of why it is a bad idea to fiddle with an AI and then give it access to a battleship)
Macross Zero (What if we actually decided to form a World Government, and not everyone wanted to go along? What if something in the Pacific could change everything? What cost would both sides pay for it?)
Jin-Roh (What if the Japan hadn't been defeated in WWII? A suspense/police drama that pulls no punches about what intellegence agencies and counter-terrorism can be like. Definitely not for kids.)
Akira (Not for the squeemish. Why it's not nice to play with Mother Nature.)
Note that the above are movies or OAVs of 1-4 episodes a peice. Series would take another whole post :)
