Zoot is right, it does depend on the Class. I have been hit at over 100km by class 3 sentry guns.

class I is 55 km and class II and III is 65
At least before castor but i allways stay more than 65 away from them
And if they start shoot they wont stop until you are over 100 km away

Yeah, and the lvl 3s give a pretty good bit of damage. I discovered the day Castor was deployed that sentries on deep space stations are now "fixed". You used to be able to splash them without penalty or problem. The night of the deployment we were sparring outside the station, as we had before, using some of the L weapons Castor had changed. 1 itty bit of splash damage and I had 3 sentry 3s hammering me from 45 to 70 KMs. Boy do they do a lot of damage and like Toast says they just keep on firing until you warp away.
TBH all the armour and hull damage wasn't anywhere near as bad as the ammount of faction hit I took for splashing the station. It was ridiculous!

Yep.
You can splash stations and stargates as much as you like in 0.0 and **** all will happen.
Look cross-eyed at a sentry gun though and you can say goodbye to your ship unless its a BS.

A tech level III will shoot you at 100km but will not respond to general criminality (attacks on players, rather than the NPC corporation) beyond 55km. A least that was true pre-castor.
