Edited by: Xori Ruscuv on 03/04/2007 22:50:09 I'd like an Eve poster for my cube at work. After all, a nice big poster of a Megathron or a couple of Tempests is WAY sexier than the gray fabric walls here.
So, off to the Eve store I go. 27.5"x19.6" - hmm, a good sized poster. But... $60? Wow. I was expecting $20-ish. That's closer to the typical price of that size of poster.
So... why so costly?
Does anyone make nice looking Eve posters for less? (Or is that even legal?)

You could make one for yourself or get given one for free, aslong as no money is exchanged they cant really stop you. However if you use any of their files to create the work, then they have some rights they will want to protect.
The price is probably to do with the cost of rolling up a poster, putting it in a packaging tube and then couriering it ( P&P ). I'm not sure without looking if the cost for international postage is the same or calculated on an individual basis.
The store is a business and needs to turn a profit to exsist. If you think its a little high, look at what "Corkage, or even Cakeage" is ( not Eve or postage related ). ______________________________

The shipping is not included in the cost of the poster, AFAIK. And there is no way it can cost them that much to roll up the poster. It is likely the PRINTING of the poster that is the inefficient part in the process - and there are far cheaper printing processes than what the CCP store uses. Hell, man, consider the cost of a starter pack of their card game. $20. If a card game with a nice box, nice cards, etc etc can cost $20... come on.
Quote: The store is a business and needs to turn a profit to exsist. If you think its a little high, look at what "Corkage, or even Cakeage" is ( not Eve or postage related ).
The printing process (ie. individual prints) on order, and the specific printing methods used is likely the cause for the cost. There are far simpler means by which to have the posters made - if CCP would do those things, it would be far cheaper. This is how businesses FAR SMALLER than CCP manage to make FAR CHEAPER posters.
Yeah, $60 is really expensive, consider that you can get a poster from your favorite band for $15 or so.
Anyway, I didn't post this for a discussion on economics or production or how CCP does it (amongst wannabe-economists). I came here looking for cheap (ie. $20-ish for that size) posters. Anyone know where I can look?
EDIT: Oh yeah, read the description. As I said - the printing method is why they're so bloody expensive:
Quote: These high quality posters are made on a Durst Epsilon that uses LED fiberoptics to expose the hires image on Kodak Endura Ultra, digital photographic resin coated paper. The prints are therefore true photographs, with superior sharpness and beautiful continous tone. According to tests made by Kodak, Kodak Endura Ultra paper will last over 100 years in typical home lighting of 150 Lux.
Where can I get a $20 poster with the same images?

Uh, what are you talking about? Anyway, as I've clearly stated, shipping isn't the problem. Shipping is probably not included in the price anyway. Look at the way they "print" these things. That's why they're so expensive. NOT SHIPPING.
Quote: I just looked. No poster over $19.95 and shipping was not that expensive. So what poster you looking at?
Learn to read before you at me, kid! I'll quote for you:
Originally by: Eve store Available in the following sizes:
- 20x30cm (8"x12") - $19.95 - 40x30cm (15,7"x11,8") - $29.95 - 70x50cm (27,5"x19,6") - $59.95
See that $20 poster? That's 20x30cm. That's like a notebook sized page. Now look at the good sized one, k? Yeah. 70x50cm, $60.

The only thing i can think of is if you take your own screenshot, put it up on someplace like deviant art, then order a print from them.
Other stores cant sell their own EVE posters without CCP's permission. So i think you have to either order a print from someone or buy off of EVE Store.

I thought about doing something like that... but the DPI whatever is the issue. I mean, to get a nice print, I'd need like 600 DPI, right? So that means I'd need a screenshot that is like 16500x11760 :(

it's a bloody wall poster ffs, 5 years would be enough, and who cares about some fancy lah-de-dah printing technique, at any distance a normal printing technique is perfectly acceptable.

Yeah... but this is a POSTER, mate! I want to stick it up in my cubicle. I really can't put a $60 poster in a place where workmates might scratch it or knock it down. (tacks don't stick into cubicle walls very well :( )
Anyway yeah...
Anyone think CCP would send me some VERY high resolution images so that I can take them to a printer myself?

Allow me to help. Have you heard of E-ON - the official EVE-Online magazine? Well, if you order a subscription that includes issue #005, with that issue comes a HUGE poster very nearly 1 metre wide. A sub costs $55.95 + p&p. So for that you get your poster and four copies of E-ON.

Edited by: Polemarch on 04/04/2007 19:06:16 There is no way CCP will give you high res images to make posters with because it's not in their best interests... they don't sell the posters at $60 per poster because they want to detract people from buying them, they do it at that price because they want to make a killing out of them. It is over-priced, it doesn't matter how they tell you how brilliant the poster is made, at the end of the day it is just a poster... it's not going to aid NASA on their next mission to Mars or anything.
I accept that they have to make a profit out of the posters... but they should offer a poster made in a normal way, at a normal price for a normal player who doesn't have the disposable income capable of spending ú35 on a large piece of paper with ink precisely stuck to it and finished with a lining of honey coated varnish.
Just because something is less expensive does not necesarily mean that it will make less profit, a poster that is less expensive will probably have more customers which will more than make up for the fewer customers with the more expensive posters.
So... offer more variety CCP.

Well, our posters are not really "posters". They are quite high quality, more like a high-gloss photograph rather than a thin poster print. You can read about the tech used for it on the store page.

More like 150 DPI, or even just 75 DPI for a poster "fit enough" for a cubicle wall. Let's settle for 120 DPI to make that an even 1/5 for your "needed resolution". So you can make due with a 3300x2350 screenshot. Or better said, just take a regular resolution screenshot (think 1600x1200 or so) and "upscale" it 2:1 (or even 4:1 if you must) with a nice filter (I prefer bell or b-spline for decent-looking finish), make a few aftertouches (a bit of sharpen, a bit of despeckle) and be done with it, print it already. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Hey Boss, I second this idea. I'd love to put up some Eve posters in my cube, but no way I'm paying $60 for something of a decent size. And for the $20 I'll print a screen shot.
Seriously Oveur, get one of the marketing lackies to put down the mocha double latte with a triple shot of espresso and have them whip up a few 24"x36" posters. Put a nice big Eve logo on them, print them on cheap paper, and sell them for $10. Then hope that all the *******s like me put 3 of them up and when people stop by and say "Hey my computers been acting up... what's this... Damn that looks cool!! What is it?" then I can respond "Oh, that's from Eve, come here and check out this video they made." Then they are all like "That's bad ass!! how do I sign up?" Then I send them the buddy code and then we all get to flame the n00bs.
Cheap posters 4tw :D
I'd also like to suggest making a poster for the T2 exotic dancer. It will sell like hotcakes. Maybe that one should be the hi-gloss non-stick kind though... Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes, ty - Cortes

unfortunately, CCP decided to go for the tech 2 poster route and made it ULTRA high skill related. For instance one of the requirements to buy that "poster" is to have "Ridiculously High Paid Job" skill at lvl 5 (this being a rank 18 skill) unfortuatenly ill have to stick to my tech 1 desktop wallpaper :(
oh and btw when the posters first came out i was first to scream for a lower priced poster alas my cries were not heard :(

I have a HUGE poster of Jessica Alba (sin city) on my wall, and it cost ú5. It's as large as I am.
To justify spending ú30 on an average sized poster you'd have to frame it well, and framing can triple the cost, which makes buying one of those posters even more absurd.
Right now only mr I have 9 accounts would invest in one, and as we all know mr I have 9 accounts quits eve 4 times a day.
That said, normal posters might involve pre-ordering a stock of them, where as these uber costly ones are per order, so you can only ever profit...
I'll make do with my computers desktop. Oh, Alyson Hannigan is there, sorry eve :(

The Iron Tide poster is quite nifty and I greatly enjoy having it on the wall behind me while I sit at my desk at home (and in front of me as my Windows wallpaper), but page folds suck. Same for the large ships poster that came with an earlier EON mag, but again....page folds suck on posters.
I have a couple of the cheaper, I mean "less expensive" 8"x12" posters as well, and the quality is excellent.
