Sorry, no real punchline here.
Fairly new and just wondering..
I was mining semi-afk in 0.7 and just happened to see a TD warp into the asteroid belt. Now, I'm new, but I could only think of one, bad, reason for a TD to show up so randomly; so I packed up my drones and GtFO. Did just see it make a beeline for a larger mining vessel that was also there, before my slow ass warped out of there.

As others have written, in EvE you're not being paranoid because they are out to get you.
You did the right thing.

In theory, a tactical destroyer is somewhat expensive (40 million), and perhaps not worth suiciding on a barge or Venture, esp. if a regular destroyer will do the job.
Typically, people use cheap T1 destroyers for high-sec attacks. The Catalyst destroyer, in particular, is a very cheap ship (1.5 million) that fits 8 guns and a bunch of magnetic field stabilizer modules for extra damage, and can pack a huge punch, perfect for a suicide attack. |

A T3D is fine for:
- providing warp-in
- can-flipping
- bumping
- psychological warfare
- misdirection

With a venture, it is common for gankers to use frigates as well, such as an Atron.

10MN MWD bumper perhaps. I like using a 100MN MWD Tengu for that so it's maybe the same concept. |

Honestly, whether it was right to dock up depends on the situation. A TD3 is not a gank boat. So it is unlikely that he was there to gank. Also, were you at war? What were you flying? If you were not at war and were flying a tanky barge such as a procurer, then there was no need to run. Alternatively, if you were not at war and were flying something very cheap - again there was no need to run. On the other hand, if you are flying a thin skinned and/or expensive ship such as a hulk - then if you see something odd in your belt (such as a newbee ship getting close to and bumping folk or somebody cloaking up on grid) its better to be safe then sorry. |

As said- the T3D is not a common ship for ganking. They are expensive for the DPS they bring. Very little that a T3D can kill before CONCORD wrecks it will be worth losing a T3D over to begin with.
T3D's get a reduction in fitting requirements for probe launchers. It's likely that the person warped to a celestial to drop probes rather than just sit exposed on a gate. Even in high sec, it's good practice to not go AFK or just sit around on gates while distracted. A T3D is a bit overkill for belt rats, but it's also possible that the person was doing just that. Often to test out a new ship or fitting idea people run over to a belt and whack a rat or two.
Regardless, it's never a bad idea to be paranoid. As you learn the game you will filter out what isn't a threat.
Hint- that Venture that flew close by you in the belt is more likely to be a threat than a random combat ship in a belt. Wait until you find out about passive targeting modules/ship scanners and bookmarking warp ins for a gank fleet. You'll never trust another miner again. |

While he *could* be a bumper, it seems unlikely he'd even be a scout, unless he was also trying to show off, which is dumb for a scout.

1. Get a procurer. It is too tanky and too cheap to be a meaningfull target for gankers. You can be ganked of cause, but usually ganker will choose other target. 2. There is such thing as a war dec in high sec. If you are under war dec, T3D can be used against you. So if you was not alone in the belt it is possible your belt-mate was the target. Stay for a while and you can probably loot the wreck :)

All kinds of reasons: Maybe he was part of a war, and just checking the belts for war targets. Maybe he was looking for rats to shoot (although that's not very profitable in 0.7). Maybe he was looking for cans to flip (occasionally, people still mine into jetcans), maybe he was scouting for potential gank targets, maybe there was no reason at all. I warped a coercer into a belt to try out my rainbow laser fit on the asteroids a couple of days ago. It's unlikely he was there to suicide gank someone, since T1 destroyers can do that just as well while costing only a fraction, but it's certainly not wrong to be suspicious about him being there. |
