So I'm simply trying to figure out how to get 'off grid' so I know what that 'does' or 'looks like' when I do it. What I imagine is that any object in my overview that is 'on grid' with me when I then go 'off grid' will disappear from my overview, but I haven't been able to see this behavior yet.
This is what I did. Tell me if I did it right, wrong, if I have a misunderstanding of the whole thing, or if these mechanics have changed.
STEPS
1) I warped to the customs office of a planet. Customs office was then at 0km from me, planet roughly 5000km from me.
2) I burned away from both customs office and planet. At this juncture I was over 900km away from the customs office, and over 5600km away from the planet. However, I could still see the customs office in overview. I theorized that this is because things like customs offices and planets are always viewable in the overview, so no biggie, I would simply drop a container and test whether I could see it.
3) Dropped a cargo container at the location over 900km away from the customs office, then warped to the customs office.
4) Realized I could see the cargo container from the customs office, both visually and on overview.
What am I doing wrong, or not 'getting'? Thanks. |

Grids are huge like 8000 KM or something now. I cant think of any relevant reason to burn 8K KM off grid. |

Oh so this has changed? The guide I read said roughly 250km or something like that. Can someone confirm the status on this? |

They've changed grids fairly recently but I am fairly certain the basic grid-fu principals still apply. So without trying to explain it, the point is, grid size is not necessarily static

And you go off grid every time you warp from a station to a gate and all the other ships fall off your overview. Also, for future reference, grid is centered on the warp in point, not the planet or moon itself.

Most of my offgrid bookmarks are 12,000 to 15,000 km from the nearest object. I won't say what I can do either way with gridfu...
Easiest way to get offgrid is to warp to a distant celestial and drop a bookmark while in warp. Then warp back to the bookmark you just made. This may take a little practice, and you can get very creative in where you put your bookmarks in a system by warping between bookmarks.

So default grid size is now huge (8000km+) making it much harder to simply point and burn off-grid? Is that what I should take from this? |

Yes they made them bigger for changes mostly for citadels, fighters( i think) and what follow(ed)(s). A keepstar is bigger than the old grid. And the largest engineering complex is nearly as big as the old grid.
Your best bet if you want off grid is to try to drop BMs either as you enter warp or land on the desired grid. Using something that is slow as molasses would probably be easier than say a frig which will accelerate much more quickly.

Grid size was changed to about 10,000km specifically because of that guide. Rather than try to figure out how to merge adjacent grids that are so close the ships should be able to shoot each other, CCP simply made grids "too big to fail." :D

The thing is you ALWAYS have grid around you. What you ASKING for is leaving current grid with current objects and making your own grid.
When objects are moving around the grid it can just split to separate grids and some objects will not see other (every object is still 'on-grid' but some of them have common grid and some - different). It happens when grid becomes 'too large' with some conditions.

It's very funny when NPC from nearby gates can lock (and sometimes attack) you from like 50000km
