I'm running missions using a Myrmidon B.C. with medium 250mm Gauss rails. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth skilling up to get T2 medium rails. The major obstacle is Medium Hybrid 5--I'm currently at 4, and it would take 2 weeks to get my skill to 5. That's a lot of time--getting T1 rails was sure a lot faster.
As far as I can figure out, there are no innate advantages of the T2 medium 250s over the Gauss, except the ability to fire T2 ammo. Using T1 ammo, the T2 guns do no better than what I've got--in fact, the T2s have higher power grid requirements, so there's a disadvantage to using them unless it's to shoot T2 ammo.
Looking at the T2 ammo, the only advantage over what I'm using now (mostly Iridium, sometimes Antimatter for up close and personal action) is that the T2 Spike gives an 80% range boost (as compared to the 20% boost given by the iridium). The damage of the Spike and Iridium seems to be the same...well, actually I'm not sure about that. The specs say that both do the same amount of kinetic and thermal damage, however, the "base shield" and "base armor" damage are higher for the T2 ammo.
So I guess I have 2 questions:
1. What is the significance of the "base" damage figures for the ammo, as opposed to the amount of specific (thermal and kinetic) damage? In other words, does the T2 ammo do more damage than the T1 stuff?
2. Overall, is the time invested in getting T2 rails worth it? Or are there better things I could be training on? (I've been playing for about 4 months.)

Running missions with T2 ammo is expensive, and yes, T2 guns have big fitting reqs. Although you get a damage bonus for training up Med Railgun Spec.
You already have the best named, stick with that, there are better things you can train up in the time you'd take to train Med Hybrid V imo.

Edited by: Fluffernator on 06/04/2007 18:32:38 Yes, t2 rails are worth it. You get a skill called medium hybrid speciliazation for it which increases overall damage. You also get a higher base damage multiplier then any of the t1 named rails. Also, you get the ability to fire t2 ammo. So all in all, t2 guns constitute a pretty good upgrade!
If you want a sick gallante ship, your going ot need t2 guns. And when your ready for battleship, going for t2 large guns will be that much easier.

Ignore those base shield/armor figures. The damage in kinetic/thermal is all that matters. T2 guns are like best named, except they are a hair better. They are better because they get a second skill to modify them, the specialization skill (in your case medium railgun specialization).
But being only 4 months into the game there might be a better use of time, and more appropriate to your BCs strengths, like drones, to train. Hard to say without knowing what you have and what your next goals are.

Yes, they're worth it. I used to use 250mm II + Spike on my Brutix in L3s and it made them a lot faster - no more slowboating to distant targets or having to tickle them with Lead.
The short range ammo is a bit pointless, but Spike is beautiful. I've since moved onto Amarrian ships and I still use Aurora and Scorch regularly - given the time they save me, they're well worth the cost.

T2 railguns are definitily worth it on a gunship, .... but your in a drone ship so get t2 drones first (i'm assuming your also going to get a Domi for lvl 4's later which also benefits more from t2 drones).
The real short answer is that its worth it to work on being able to fully t2 fit your ships. ------------------------------- C.D's Formula for success ------------------------------- Credit Card = Game Time Card Gametime Card = ISK Therefore Credit Card = ISK.

Defo worth it. Youre going to want t2 large rails if you plan on using rails at all in pvp, the difference in damage at range is incredible.
As it benifits you right now, training med hybrid 5 and med rail spec 1-4 (which allows you to train for large rails later) youll get a 13% bonus to med t2 railgun damage.
Also, not sure what proto rails are going for these days but I'm pretty sure t2 is cheaper than best named.

Tech 2 Rails... Best named rails from what I remember are the prototype rails and not Gauss. The tech 2 versions have the same base damage multiplier and speed the 1 main diffence is in the 8% (at level 4) damage bonus from the med rail spec skill.
Your Ship of choice will gain more benifit from having Battle Cruisers 4 Tech 2 drones All related drone skills to 4 the all the gunnery support to 4 After that tech 2 med rails are yoiur buddy.

Even if you use T1 ammo, you still get a damage bonus over t1 rails. And if you ever pvp in the myrmidon, medium t2 blasters + dual repper tank + t2 drones is NASTY.

Two options... A or B...
Option A: decide that training nothing up to get better weapons is worth it and stay stagnant...
Option B: Train up for T2 because they're shiney (oh, and a bit better 2%/level
Go for option B...

if its taking you 2 weeks to train med hybrid 5 you might do well to train your learning skills a bit more- unless you just have bad atts. t2 are worth training for even if you dont use them- the skills you need to use them will give your named guns better performance. You know, I did get T2 drones. Then I looked in the market at what they cost, and gagged. The NPCs regularly chew up my drones, so I figured I'd go broke using T2 drones on missions, and haven't used them yet. Or am I missing something? (Probably, eh?)

Yes, your drones should not have aggro. The trick is get all the rats firing at you, and then unleash your drones. Granted some (or all, not 100% sure) missions will still aggress your drones even if you get tank first but in general you should only lose drones under extreme circumstances.
And yes T2 rails are worth it but probably not at this stage in the game. Drone upgrades 5 would be a better use of time for a myrmidon pilot.

First, your ammo damage information is wrong. Spike M has roughly same damage as lead, not iridium. So the range difference is the full 80%, which is quite a lot. I use medium rails in PvP a lot and this range is wonderful. I expect it would be helpful for missions as well.
Second I think others have pointed out the 2% per level you get for the spec skill, so this typically works out to an 8% damage increase regardless of which kind of ammo you use.

Another aspect, in a lot of cases (not all) the T2 stuff is actually cheaper then the named stuff because named stuff can be rare since it only comes from PVE. Someone could be spitting out T2 stuff via BPO all day long though. Trust me, train up the T2 rails because when you get into a BS and you want to snipe from forever away, it's going to be a much longer train having to do medium and then large T2 skills at that point. Get started now and take advantage of it, then the jump to large won't be so bad.
