Hello,
New to EVE and I've been looking around what lore sources I could find and trying to locate the player bases views to see what was acceptable for RP in EVE. Despite searching everywhere (at least it feels like that), I have not been able to find anything that definitively states how players would feel about someone roleplaying an Ammatar, but making a Minmatar to do so.
I understand that the Ammatar have essentially had their culture become indistinguishable from that of Amarr's, the character I'm hoping to make would embrace the Amarr way of life fully. My reasoning for wanting to use a Minmatar character opposed to an Amarr character is because of one simple thing - customization options.
I like to make my character's look like me as much as possible, and every so often a game will have a race who's ideals match up with me to T (the Amarr) but for whatever reason, they either cannot have darker skin tones or coarse hair. As I'm sure many of the more experience EVE players are aware, the Minmatar have the only Dreadlock hair option and the darkest skin tones available.
I don't know how genetics are set to work in this game, but I tend to rely on conventional science that states dark skin overrides lighter skin. I find it difficult to believe that the Ammatar would not have some among their people who still held prominent Minmatar features or a mix, which Is really what I want to go for.
I'd like my character to have father who was True Amarrian and mother who was of strictly Ammatar decent. Why you might ask, to pay homage to my own life, being that I am a multiracial individual. Not to worry, while I do make an advent attempt to make my character resemble myself as much as possible. I do so within the confines and parameters of the particular game's lore that I am dealing with. I am a very apathetic individual in real life so mixing my character's feelings with mine has never been an issue - I can separate ooc from ic.
That said, the question is: how much would I get shunned by the rp community if I did this? I want a character with Dreadlocks and brown skin, but who is loyal to the Amarr, is of both Ammatar and True Amarrian decent. Of course, the true Amarrian side of his family has essentially disowned him, but I would really like to know what the communities thoughts are on this before I go ahead and do it.

((this forums ic, might want to ask in eve fiction, to answer your question for Info as best I can, eve source has a page on the ammatar, eve inspiracy's wiki has a page with info I believe and mark(I forget the numbers next to his name)'s new Eden travelers guide should help, or atleast be a point to start. I don't believe you'd be shunned but you would have your work cut out for you with dealing with some people)) |

In anticipation of this thread getting moved to the appropriate place I'll answer fully.
Ammatar are a completely legit choice to roleplay as. There's even a very talented and experienced RPer who roleplays as a former slave that was emancipated and still flies for Amarr. I myself play a half caldari half amarr character. No one will shun you as a player for choosing an interesting and perfectly reasonable idea, but as Vess pointed out In-Character other characters may respond both positively and negatively to your character's stance. This is a good thing as conflict leads to content and character growth.
Feel free to hang around on eve fiction, poke the other players in the channels "OOC" and "out of character" ingame.

((As Deitra said, the Intergalactic Summit is a pure IC forum. This is a bit different from other MMO RP forums, but in EVE this is a place where the characters post threads completely in-character, like they are actually on an in-universe message board. OOC topics about RP are best posted on the EVE Fiction forum, as that is an OOC forum. Don't worry about reposting or anything, this thread will probably get moved there by a moderator. Just letting you know for the future.
As for your questions. The only real issue with playing Ammatar characters is that minmatar characters mechanically have to select from Republic capsuleer universities. This requires a lot of wrangling to get in. But for playing an Amarr-loyal Ammatar, there's no problem with that at all, there's been plenty of characters who have done that already. My recommendation though is to acknowledge your ethnicity rather than trying to ignore it. While a lot of previous Ammatar players have tried to claim to be ethnically Nefantar, that option is not given in the game and so pretending to be one feels immersion breaking. But one has to remember that all of New Eden's nations are multicultural, and that there are plenty of ethnic Brutor, ethnic Sebiestor, even other races, who live in the Ammatar Mandate and also call themselves Ammatar.
So, I recommend going with a character who was born and raised in the Ammatar Mandate, and is an ethnic Brutor with some True Amarr heritage. All of that is absolutely fine and you won't get any hassle for it. As said, the only issue will be coming up with a reason for why your character did their capsuleer training in the Republic.
Welcome to EVE, by the way. :) |

(( Heed the Samira. The Samira is wise and terrible. Also evil and a bads, but heed nonetheless. Just stay clear of the Out Of Character channel, it's frankly cancerous. The OOC channel has at least some token moderation and slightly higher quality floor, but I'm still not banned from there yet so it's not by much.
For questions on Amarr/Ammatar roleplay, you will find plenty of good information there, and from individuals like Samira that has experience with the sort of cross-faction foibles such RP might entail.

(( Hi, welcome. Also answering here in anticipation of the move.
This character started with a similar Amatarish background. Samira is right, that with the university choices being limited to race, you have to do a little fancy footwork with the background. But there's been a few Matari with Amarr loyalty in and out over the years, and they've always been fun to play with.
I'd also suggest you look here in the IGS for the "IGS: Roll Call" thread (which should really be stickied to the top. Please and thank you CCP). This will give you a really good sample of how people have designed the backstories for their characters.
And of course, check out the Announcement and sticky at the top here for RP resources and the reminder from the IGS communications director.
Welcome to EVE and welcome to EVE RP. It is vastly different from the RP in other MMOs, but over the years, I've found it to be some of the best.

I want to thank everyone for all the great and amazing feedback. You guys really made me feel welcome and this an awesome first time interaction with the community on the forums. Means the world - truly. That said, my apologies go out to CCP and the community for posting this thread in the wrong section. I read it fast and thought it was for all matters pertaining to [RP]
Thanks again everyone!

I've read in the newspapers, that some Tribal social commentators, on Minmatar social media, have loudly and repeatedly condemned all such forms of "role play", and that any establishments catering to such fantasies should be closed down. Scenarios such as "Ammatar Overseer and Feisty Slave", or "Amarr Lady and Lustful Slave", are considered "immoral", and "damaging to the development of young Minmatar", and that any pleasure hubs operating such scenarios should be raided by the Republic Security Service, as they are probably some kind of psy-op by the Amarr Empire.

(( This thread is still here? Now, with the OP's question answered... can we have a bit of fun with it?... :P ))
...I think there's nothing wrong with a bit of roleplaying. As long as it's... uhm... not the wrong kind of roleplaying! (Yes, ms. Valate, I'm looking at your post. )
I even roleplayed an Ammatar once.
When I was about 10, my friend got a boxed Collector's edition of Endless Dungeons at his birthday, so I invited him over and we fired up the level generator. He rolled a Trueborn Priest, and I decided to go with Ammatar Paladin for some bizarre reason, probably because the character was so unusual, dark and exotic but yet a beacon of Faith.
Then, we spent a happy evening together clearing some Takmahl catacombs full of risen skeletons and hooded cultists. The end boss was an Awakened Blood Bishop; I couldn't hurt him with my puny sword so I tried to just distract his attention while my friend cast all manners of holy spells at the creature. In the end we, of course, died and lost all the loot.
Not sure I would play that now again as an adult though! |
