A first hour in Eve:
"I want to be able to do area damage. How do I get one of those Titan things."
"I can buy one if I do stuff in 0.0? OK, I'll head down there to get started."
"Jump gate? What's a jump gate?"
"Jump queue? What's a jump queue?"
"How much longer will it take me to get to 0.0?"
"Are we there yet?"
"Why is he flashing red?"
"Uh, I'm back where I started. What happened?"
"Clone? What's that?"
"Where does my ship respawn? I can't seem to find it."
"I'm not having fun. What equates to a magic user in this game?"

IMHO it is good to get the best T1 frig your race has then get the support skills to fly it well. Racing to the next largest ship without the skills to fly it is a recipe for heart break.

Edited by: Doomed Predator on 09/04/2007 16:43:25 Welcome to EVE m8. I recomend you to the tutorial, maybe twice if you have to. Hell after one year of playing i did the tutorial for laughs and i found out something new(like setting the overwiev). You usaly get a nice implant on the end which will give you the isk to get started.
Stay out of low sec and 0.0 systems as the people there will 99% try to kill you. Talk to people in local some are rude but most will help you out or even give you some isk. Try to stay out of Jita, Motsu, Rens, Hek cause those are very popular systems and you get a lot of lag if you try to do missions there( which can resould you dieing)
Always insure your ship!!
Train learning skills for faster skill training.
Most importantly have fun

Don't get emotionaly attached to your ships, remeber that they are just 1's and 0's on your HD, and if you got it once you can get it again! At least this train of thought works for me. =) Enjoy EvE there is nothing else like it!

Some good advice has already been given.
What you need to know is that EVE is like shark infested waters. Be weary of scams, ore thieves, can swapping tricks to force aggro, low sec systems (gankers paradise) and know that 0.0 systems are claimed territory where if your not set as friendly to the controlling alliance you'll most likely get shot.
Do a lot of reading. Read up on all the player guides, read up on what is happening day to day in EVE so when you undock you know what kind of universe you are stepping into. If you think you'll be staying for awhile invest in your learning skills, as well I recommend putting in as much time into things that will improve your cap and powergrid as would your weaponry and defense. As the saying goes "Cap is life".
Most importantly find some really cool people to play with (I recommend Kiwis and Canucks) and ignore those who would enjoy making you so miserable that you quit.
Good luck.

3 tips:
(1) Focus on your learning skills (2) Don't think that there's just missions you can do as a n00b. Get out there & explore! (3) LEARNING SKILLS
Also, it's a good idea to get your learning skills train up as a maximum priority.
PS: You should get your basic learning skills each to 4, concentrating on the INT and MEM first. Then as soon as you can afford them, get the advanced learning skillbooks and train those to 4 as well.

I actually disagree with this. If you're doing the 14-day trial and you're still unsure whether to stick with EVE for the long-term, then forget learning skills and learn stuff you're interested in. That way you get a better feel for the different roles out there. People talk about "deciding what you want to do beforehand", but there's no way to make an educated decision unless you try it out for yourself.
