Edited by: Farrellus Cameron on 12/04/2007 03:47:44 Ok, I know my comp sucks but I would like to know what part sucks the most. I get massive lag during even medium sized battles and using every trick I know of. Yes, I turn off turrets, effects, sound. I get rid of almost every column on my overview. I reduce the graphics to the lowest settings, even removing the Z-Buffer, and I run in window mode. Still I get ridiculous amounts of lag.
My specs: 2.4 GHZ Celeron 1 GB RAM ATI All-in-Wonder x80O XT 256MB
Please for the love of God tell me what sucks so much. ----------------------------------------------------

For fleet battles you need a lot of CPU and that Celeron was never intended to do more than web browsing I'm afraid.
We're sorry, something happened. |

Actually, it exceeds the "recommended" setup for Eve. Time to downgrade. :P
Have a read of some of the recent "lag" threads in a number of the forum sections. You'll be delighted to know that there is no hardware available that currently suits the Eve client.

I totally understand that lag is a general problem in EVE. But I get severe lag when other people with me say they aren't getting a lot. There have been many instances where my lag just seems a lot worse than the people I am with.
My internet connection is a wireless connection to a DSL line. I ran a DSLReports test and it clocked in at 800 kb/s download, 300 kb/s upload. Don't know if that would have much affect. I haven't had a chance to check what my RAM speed is.
I have a feeling its the Celeron though. My CPU kept overheating a while back and I replaced the CPU fan and now it doesn't overheat. But it's still probably pretty strained.

Yeah, well, it's not actually lag that you are dealing with. You are really dealing with stutter. I put lag in quotes because most thread titles have that in it.
Do a search for "stutter" and you'll find me patching up the misconception in the Eve community that is lag. And maybe some understanding of what can and can't be done.
In short, yes, you are CPU and RAM bound, mostly RAM speed. But, as I've already said you can't actually fix stutter, only CCP can do that.

Desktop computer with wireless? Either stop stealing or get wired. Wireless on a stationary system just induces problems..
Anyway, the ram seems fine as long as you're running XP. GFX card is decent enough. Problem is, to upgrade the cpu you'd need a new board, probably DDR2 ram, and if you're unlucky and that x800 is AGP, you'd need a new graphics card as well, basically looking at a whole new comp.

How old is your Windows install? Might be time for a fresh format; Windows just gets slower and slower over the course of a few years until it becomes unusable.
You more than meet EVE's reqs with what you've listed, so you shouldn't really be getting too much slow down, aside form the normal. --------

I don't steal wifi, I just live in a large apartment. I've been thinking about rewiring the phone bank to get the DSL pumped into the phone jack in my room, I just hadn't gotten around to it. This will give me some motivation.
I have also ordered a new processor, Intel Pentium 4. Its nice that they are pretty cheap now that the dual cores are out. I will also look into getting more RAM.
My windows installation is actually really fresh, I got a new harddrive recently and have a completely fresh installation.
90% of the game is fine for me, its just those semi-large battles that kill me. ----------------------------------------------------

may running any high security programms (kaspersky...) ? - wrong settings on it increase network monitoring - in that case you get alot lag while multiplaying !

My vote is for the celeron. I get 10x better performance with a 512mb 2GHZ processor than I do with a 2gb 3GHZ celeron.

Eve does not use a lot of bandwidth. Your latency is more important than your bandwidth. Read the latest dev blog and run pingplotter. You may also wish to just use ping to send a number of packets to the server.
I also play Eve over wireless in an apartment. I had severe responsiveness issues. By using ping, I found that my wireless connection was dropping lots of packets. I fixed the responsiveness problem by changing wireless channels to one with a lot less noise. For me, the best channel has been 10 because 1, 6, and 11 (the independent channels) all have a lot of neighbors on them.

Just to note, in some countries some channels are illegal to use for wireless connections, because they're reserved for other proposes. So check them first. A little overview (german, but you'll get it)

UPDATE: I replaced the 2.4 celeron with a 2.4 pentium 4. All I have to say is WOW. HUUUUGE improvement. My fps went from 20 to 65.
Thanks to everyone for their input. We pleasure from playing EVE has dramatically increased. ----------------------------------------------------

That's fishy. Must be something else on top of that. Eg: Bad heatsink triggering throttling.

That celeron is really bad crippleware at anyrate, cache mem was the only thing that kept the P4's running efficiently ( and they really needed that with how they were setup internally), hit the cache with the nerfbat and things fall apart.
It could have been damaged when he needed to replace his cpu fan as well.
