First, Not Speak as CCP as I Am not CCP,
The supposed sale rumor is based of a poorly researched article. I suggest reading this player blog as he gives a pretty good background on why this story came out. http://nosygamer.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-newest-rumor-of-sale-of-ccp-games.html

I think the talk that Eve is dying or the game is stagnant is a bit overrated. And Eve being for sale - a bit out of context too. They were seeking investors, which I guess means they are offering shares or part of the company in exchange for a huge check. CCP did this essentially to fund the development for Eve Valkyrie.
I think the kind of people that think Eve is dead are the kind that are bored for hours on end waiting for some sort of action to be spoon fed to them by their FC/CEO.
If Eve was dying, they wouldn't have just bought a new server or still be developing new patches and releases for it.

If I ever was to be rich enough to "win EVE" that way, I would hype a major expansion and blow everyone's pixels the day before the planned release right at down time, then add a massive useless patch than does not change the game at all but cause massive bandwidth requirement to gain access back to the server with an updated client, claim a major bug happened and wait for day 2 of the expansion to call myself out and just shut it all down.
I guess I'm kind of an a-hole for just thinking it all. |

The only way a new owner would shut down eve, is if hey wanted the ip.
If say a large company was to buy ccp, there are usually a few reasons:
1) they can make profit with the current players and will just milk what they can untill they sell for profit.
2) they want technology that ccp has, so they can use it to make a new 'better game" (alas west wood being bought out by EA, it was for the avatar tech to be use din thesims MMO plus #3)
3) the company has an ip the large guys want. (in west woods case, that was CnC.)
Otherwise, they typically just buy shares to own a company, collect there dividends then sell for profit, and the company chugs along with no issues, and no one caring,
So no, i don;t think eve is shutting down anytime soon. they just upgraded the server this past year, so we have at min about 4 years left to get there return on investment before they shut down. so basicly relax, and play the game

Now contract me all your and your friends stuff seeing as I saved you a lot of hassle to stay subbed in this dead and dying game.
Have you heard anything I've said?

I figure roughly 5 years of incrementally decreasing development/support (mostly towards F2P/P2Play/cosmetic and pet nonsense), next 5 years in terrible decline as a zombie.
CCP has not future proofed its product very well. Attempts to do so all have resulted in disjointed disasters. They tried to integrate and develop EVE by peripheral products. All have failed.
This game also hasnt caught the attention/enthusiasm of the new generation of gamers. Not because its hardcore (there is a huge market looking for exactly that right now), but because they dont like the idea of dealing with 10yr vets that dominate/steamroll the ingame environment. They already feel overwhelmed in their own life by babyboomers etc.
Aside from the "give me a reward for existing" millenials, those who might be otherwise interested in EVE, are more interested at a chance a new start in a fresh hardcore MMO, so they too can be 10yr vets down the line lording it over others.
They want a level playing field to start from.

I been seeing these "EVE is dying" threads for a long time now but I think it may be for real this time. EVE has lost a lot of players due to changes over the last year and while they have gained some, most of the gains will be short lived. Free to play brings in a different type of gamer, not the subscription type players that have keep things going for 10 years. In the end, I doubt they will pick up very many subscriptions. The player base is slowly getting smaller and smaller and new threads pop up on a daily basis with complaints of greefing and forced PVP. Not saying I agree with them...EVE is EVE....just saying that the player base has become like a snake eating it's own tail. Everyone who likes the darker side of EVE is already playing or has played. All the new players coming in for free who are used to games basically handing them everything they need with no chance of losing it, well, I just can't see them subscribing for any long period of time. Just my 2 cents! I hope I'm wrong. |

I admire you. You are friendly and make good points.
Im new but I have always wanted to play this game. Tried a few times but it is truly overwhelming.
CCP and their playerbase are unique: CCP wanted so badly to make an awesome game and please their playerbase. That is good. But if you werent along for the ride from early on you will always feel like an outsider.
As old players drop out (thats how life works) the new players are simply overwhelmed and confused, feeling truly stupid and noobish. You dont want to pay money for that feeling, especially if its gonna take months to get "into" the game.
And being an Alpha means that you never will get "into" the game. Too many restrictions.

I also wish I had started EVE much earlier on.
But this ship is slowly sinking. Doesnt mean we cant have fun while it lasts. But the inevitable is closer than ever before.
Everything dies. All things end.
There may never be such an opportunity, game and community again. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Naah, WoT has been dying for its whole life
CCP has to make some tough decisions.
Downsize and maybe replace some of their crew. Take a fresh "noob" look at the game and its mechanics.
Hell, maybe even start from scratch, EVE 2.0!
EVE: Return of the elder.
EVE: New dawn.
EVE: Offworld.
ADAM: The stoneage.

There are ways EVE can re-invigorate its player base, temporarily.
But the problem is they have dumped so much money and effort into side-projects that didnt pan out.
As far as I know, there is no EVE 2.0 in the works. And inorder for that to culminate in time, it should have been started years ago, when money was good, competition low, so as to be realized in the near future (~5yrs).
Enjoy it while it lasts. We got a few more good years.

The amount of positive change in the game during the last couple of years is staggering.
One of the finest examples is the warp speed change. When I joined EVE this somehow feeled lacking, that all ships were warping at the same speed. Reactions on forums were, that it's never going to change. You learn to deal with it and then, plop, one fine day it's there .
CCP has done a tremendous job in the last years rebelancing ships so far. Not everything is fine. It takes time to put new ships in the right place. But the most important is, that they really stick to it continously.
The game as a product feels alive compared to 6 years ago. Obviously there is work to do. But what product of this size is ever finished?
Remove standings and insurance.

I bailed three years ago because I had been hit with the nerf bat so many times I was going blind with rage. I'm back now, but it isn't the same. It isn't bad, but is isn't the same either. I have a 50/50 opinion on the death of EVE thing. I am going month to month. In my personal opinion, if it a money thing, make a mid-level clone that allows for players to use all they have trained, but they cannot train anymore. Maybe 67% of the Omega cost?
I'm playing an Alpha toon to see what the free players can experience. I know what is out there, but I want to see what they can do too.

I'm a complete noob so I don't have any idea about the inner workings of the game or it's servers so this may be a dumb question...
Do you guys think it's possible that if this game shut down someone could make a private server? I ask b/c games with much higher population counts have private servers. The big WoW private server had a ton of people playing on it.
I do know that on EvE everyone is on the same server so that would make things a lot harder I'm sure. |

No chance.
If EVE goes completely **** up, CCP may throw a Hail Mary to the community by offering them the code to run and develop private servers so as to perpetuate their legacy.
But I wouldnt bet on it.
And EVE wouldnt be the same without a one server environment. And I dunno whether one person can even facilitate EVE as a server with what people typically have at home for even a fraction of current population, unless you are playing on it alone. Probably not.

The article from Bloomberg was ambiguous at best. Speculation mostly. I see enough in game personally that makes me think it's got a few more years left. I am, by no means, an expert on MMOs or their longevity.
The 5 year prediction seems a bit short, but then again it could be spot on.
Returning to the game and resubbing so that I can fly all my Shiney ships is worthwhile for me. Even for the short duration. Not many other MMOS offer what EvE offers, if at all. They've made significant improvements to the game.with regard to new players joining the game. It definitely caters to the millenials. It will only get them so far however, because the curve is still steep when it comes to flying in nullsec.
I mean yea, it's fresh meat for the vets who are looking for new targets to pop or bait and pop in highsec, sure. Most of these newer players don't understand how to navigate defensively in the sand box. They'll either rage quit and another new player will take their place or adapt, learn to git gud and move on to nullsec for even more fun to be had.
I posted this question, because I personally love this game. I'm not entirely sure why I stopped playing 3 years ago. Real life demands took precedent. School, again, will be a thing, but I'm not going to let it stop me from enjoying what remains of the lifespan of this game.
I'll see you all in space my fellow pilots, either to pop my own shiney ships in an endeavor to pop yours or just pop yours. Regardless I'm looking forward to seeing lots more explosions to come! |

I read basically this exact post in 2008. Again in 2010, 2011, 2014 and... Well, you get the point.
PS given that eve has had no compromise on all-zones non-consensual PvP for 14 years now, I think it might be time for you to accept that there won't be much shift on that point in the next 14.

Depending on how you count it, we're playing EVE III or IV right now (EVE 8 or 9 if it was an EA game, or EVE 30+ if it was a Square Enix).

What would you suggest for an EVE 2.0? Such a thing would stop the development of Eve cold. Eve 2016 even has changed a lot from the November/2015 game I started. Eve is moving an changing which will keep it up for another 15 years, simply because there si nothing to compare it to. Every CEO of a development studio that would suggest a game with such harsh consequences as Eve would tarred and feathered and chased away. Even in Dark Souls you get your souls back after death. Eve has a secure niche which will hamper it's growth but on the other side will guarantee it's survival.

Yes, Eve will be shut down soon, in a little over 1 hour as I type this. Eve shuts down at the same time every day, it's called "the daily server reset".
