You can try to narrow your d-scan to a 5 or 15 degree beam and "look" around with it, maybe you get lucky and the guy was at a planet or moon when he launched the probes, and you just need to find out which one. |

Course of action would depend on the type of probes you saw on D-scan and your location.
If Core probes then someone is scanning for exploration sites.
If Combat probes then someone is scanning for ships, drones, MTU's, etc.

Even if you can find them (typically found on gates), you can't pick them up, there is no right click option to scoop them even if you fly right up to them. They used to be left in space when people jumped systems or docked up without recovering them. An option, that still exists, allowed people to reconnect to 'lost drones' if they return to the system where they left them. But I think this is legacy code that is no longer valid.
Things were changed so that the probes automatically return to your cargohold if you dock / jump system and even DC. Also if you die, it appears that the probes die too. I lost a prober recently on an alt with Sisters probes out and he couldn't reconnect to them when he returned less than an hour later. I've also killed several probers in WH space but there are never any left over probes after the event. I believe the only way they won't return to your cargohold now is if you fill your cargohold while your probes are out and there is no room to recover them, but I've no idea how long they stay in space for or whether they simple die when you leave local. |
