From the wikipedia page for 'Griefer'
'Space sims like Eve Online and Elite: Dangerous have incorporated activities typically considered griefing as part of the gameplay mechanism. Corporate spying, theft, scams, gate-camping, and PVP on non-PVP players are all part of their gaming experience.'

CCP is pretty harsh when it comes to players they consider to be 'griefing'. Bad things happen to them.
Unfortunately many people come here with the idea that 'griefing' means the same thing here as it does in other games.
It doesn't, plain and simple.
Great strides have been taken over the years to improve the new player experience. It is currently leap years ahead of what it used to be. Not kidding, they have made certain systems off limits for nogoodery that targets new players. Nobody is claiming this is a bad thing, either. Many of the older pilots remember just how godawful it was to start fresh in EVE back in the bad old days.
Now, what happens after one leaves the nest and strikes out on their own is subject to the vagaries of fate. Bad things happen in New Eden, even to good people. Even to new people. Ganking, theft, scamming and goading into a losing battle are all fair play here, even though in other games they most likely would be considered 'griefing'. Here they are not.
A counter-observation: many of the characters I've encountered in this game who are bloodthirsty pirates, mercenaries, thieves and gankers have, after actually speaking with them, turned out to be pretty decent folks who are just playing the bad guy in the game because it actually lets them for once unlike other games.
I'm not going to tell new players to go back to WoW. Hell, I want them to stay. But, I want them to learn what they are dealing with in all it's magnificent ugly glory and decide for themselves.
They need to understand this world and adapt to live in it, not the other way around.

You keep using that word again. I do not think it means what you think it does.
This is not minecraft. This is not WoW. This is not Hello Kitty in Space... yet.
CCP determines what griefing is in their game. Not you. Not me.
You consent to PVP by undocking. It's implicit. Someone can do you harm if they wish to. No space knights honorably duelling here, just back alley knife fights and bar-room brawls. Fair fights only happen by accident generally.

"I headed into 0.4 in a cruiser representing most of my net worth looking for better L3 mission income, and assuming somehow 0.4 was just a little worse than 0.5 space, rather than being infested with griefers /lol. I got ganked by lowlifes, and judged it would take too long to get set up again (as per the first point)."
griefers. lowlifes.
Better that than a fool I guess.
Unless you had previously disabled it, which I doubt, there was a pop up window that came up right before you jumped into 0.4 space that warned you that it was DANGEROUS and that you could very likely DIE. Don't go blaming others for engaging in PvP in one of the areas of the game that EVERY damned bear ever tells people to go to if they want to PvP. You walked into their turf and they took your cookie. That's on you, not them.
These kind of threads seem to keep popping up lately, it might be time for a new 'Kill it Forward' campaign.

These kind of threads seem to keep popping up lately, it might be time for a new 'Kill it Forward' campaign. I covered this sufficiently. Read the post to the end instead of replying when you think you see an easy target. I removed some text explaining why I was confident they were griefers because it isn't relevant. I read to the end of the post. Actually, pretty much everything past the quoted point wasn't relevant.
The 'save the children' era is over. We now have PLEX, Skill Injectors and alpha clones. Players can choose to either adapt to the game, leave, or come to the forums to scream like a kid with a skinned knee. EVE will remain cold and for the most part uncaring. Gentrification will be resisted violently and vocally.

A bit late to the party here on the topic, but... A couple years ago I bagged a two week old newbie in an orthrus. Module drops were just shy of 250 million ISK. That would be.... profit. Do I feel bad? Nope. Space Veal. Yummy, tender, PLEX fattened meat.
If I see faction drones or magpie/packrat MTU's on scan then I know that odds are good that there's someone who has more money than sense out there. At that point I don't care whether or not it still has spots on it's fur, I'm going after the money.
Granted, I'm looking at what someone's driving and whether or not it's likely to be blinged rather than their age when I seek out playmates. Sometimes I get old crusty players, sometimes it's a wided-eyed space cadet who's about to learn a hard lesson in consequences.

Confirming the mind game is very real. Fear can have as great of an impact as anger.
I've seen mid to large sized corps shed half their members, dock up, or just not log on for a week or two just because the big red button was hit. War, yo! With nary a shot fired by the aggressors the target corp effectively ceases to be an entity for the duration of the war. Of course it doesn't hurt to be an aggressor with a reputation for making house calls.
PvP extends to the forums as well. This is part of why we see droves of mewling npc bears with their pants on their heads clogging up various threads with wrong minded nonsense. They have to use npc alts for it because if they don't they might encounter someone who disagrees with their dreck strongly enough to hold them accountable for it within the game itself. I always got a chuckle whenever I saw Cannibal Kane chime in on some derp's stream of nonsense.

Ima Wreckyou wrote:Hakawai wrote:If we go with the usual definiton of PvP as you suggest (i.e. if it's players fighting/competing it's PvP) then the numerous arguments that all PvP is good behavior become null. Not sure why you never address my posts to you where I actually make an effort to clarify the definitions which obviously are confusing you a lot. maybe you are just interested in trolling and not in an actual discussion?
Nailed it.
This particular forum alt has a very familiar feeling habit of staunchly arguing the indefensible.
Your words, "Do. Not. Summon. Them."
