When we fly a ship such as the Punisher, Mauler, Omen, Apoc, etc., is there suppose to be a crew on board in theory? Or are you the only person in a ship the size of a Star Destoyer controlling everything in a pod of goo?
Can anyone help me out

Different ships have various sizes of crews, you are in command, and your abilities to get the best form your crew are reflected from the skills you train and utilise.
When u eject or run away in your pod, after NPCs are finished with you,its just you that escaped, the crew dies or remains with the ship.

Frigates, have no crew other then you the capitain.
Industrials have like 30 - 100, crusiers have a few hundred, and battleships have thousands.
Hehe, but when your ship gets blown up its only the captian that gets an escape pod. The crew goes down with the ships in eve.

I think there is a story in eve chronicles about it. You are in a capsule which is linked to the ship, because of that you dont need any other crewmembers but yourself in a capsule.

Uhm, not quite -- the capsule allows to simplify tasks for the ship captain, making it easier for them to issue orders and get the idea of their surroundings... so small vessels like frigates can be managed single-handedly... but the capsule doesn't make the ships all automated -- anything bigger than frigate still needs the human crew to carry out the orders, and the crew size can reach up to thousands for the battleships. o.o;

Actually larger ships still do need to maintain a crew, and ccp had early plans to institute a crew as like a bonus, the more expeirence they had the better your ship did, but I heard it got scrapped because it made human lives look like fuel or something.

My crew escapes in separate pods, me as the captain is the only one sporting a blinking light to draw attention though.
